So glad others could chime in before me as I knew I wasn't crazy when I read that.

Calvin Johnson is the most physically gifted WR in football but with a rookie throwing you the ball in a dead end like Detroit, what can you do.

There isn't a GM in the league who would take Miles Austin over Calvin Johnson. Miles is awesome, however, sometimes you have to look beyond stats.

Correct...it all comes down to who's delivering the mail(qb).

Austin is not a top-5 WR IMO.

1. Fitz
2. Andre Johnson
3. Calvin Johnson (when healthy)
4. Reggie Wayne
5. Randy Moss (when motivated)
6. Steve Smith
7. Brandon Marshall
8. Miles Austin
9. Desean Jackson
10a. Wes Welker
10b. Roddy White

To say Miles Austin is a top 5 wr in the league, that comment would give our fan base a homer sterotype.

Mile Austin is good but lets keep it real here he has some improving to do. He drops way too many balls and doesn't make all the tough catches. What I mean by tough catch is the ones that are high or outside with too many going off his fingertips. To be top 5 you need to make those. I know Im being hard but top 5 is top 5. In addition, can he play injury free for multiple seasons?

Top 5 right now is

1. Andre Johnson
2. Larry Fitzgerald
3. Randy Moss
4. Desean Jackson
5. Brandon Marshall

Calvin Johnson= Freak athlete, he needs to put together healthy seasons
Boldin= Very solid reciever but not top 5
VJackson= One more season and he makes it
Welker= Brady + Moss = Welkers success
etc
etc

Ohh yeah, how can you forget about Mr.consistency Reggie Wayne. Hes top 5. So many good recievers.

you putting desean jackson in the top 5 is just as silly as anyone suggesting miles austin. desean finished 37th in total catches. he is a great big play guy but he is hardly a guy who controls games with consistency. austin has 14 more catches and 2 more receiving TDs.

same for people touting calvin johnson. he has dropped a handful of passes and generally looked like a Lions WR most of the year. he has less than 900 yards receiving and only 4 TDs.

Not sure he makes my top 5. He's close though...

1. Brandon Marshall
2. Andre Johnson
3. Larry Fitzgerald
4. Vincent Jackson
5. Wes Welker
6. Reggie Wayne
7. Miles Austin

This list is close enough for me.

that statement would mean a lot more if any of the other ex-Lions WRs did anything once they left... you know Charles Rogers, Mike Williams, Roy Williams....

The day I pick Wes Welker over Calvin Johnson - take me out to pasture and shoot me.

No joke.

Welker is a beneficiary of playing with the best deep receiver in the game, and the best QB in the game.

That being said, he's one helluva receiver, and the best underneath guy in the league. However, an underneath slot receiver is never going to succeed as a #1 receiver.

He needs Moss.

Vincent Jackson has got to be the most underrated receiver in the league. How can he not be in anyone's top 5?

Those that are ranking D Jackson over Austin please answer me this: How can you rate someone lower when he has more catches, yards and TDs in less games? Granted Miles hasn't done it year in and year out but either has Jackson. I have no prob ranking AJ, Wayne, fitz etc higher in part b/c they have proven it. Be Jackson has done it for one year. Same as Austin

He disappears at times. He's behind Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Moss (still), Brandon Marshall.

He fits more in the Roddy White, M. Colton and DeSean Jackson group IMO.

Definitely debatable however.

Very, very true.

I dont even have him in my top ten, but that was a brain fart.

He's def. top 10, but I dont know about top 5.

I'd put him at 6. Right above Steve Smith, right below Randy Moss.

how does that make him drop the ball?

and i'm not sure if you watched the Pats this year but Moss and Brady both had rather mediocre years by their standards as did the Pats OL.

Welker has only played 12 games and has 122 catches, that's insane production. He has had 7 games with 10 or more catches.

Welker is first in receptions, 2nd in yards receiving, 2nd in first downs gained.

Anyone who fails to recognize that as a dominant year is just goofy.

calvin johnson has 8 dropped passes... and 61 catches.
http://stats.washingtonpost.com/fb/leaders.asp?range=NFC&type=Receiving&rank=232&year=

terrell owens who has poor hands has 9.

welker has 6 drops out of 122 catches meaning he has caught 95% of the passes thrown his way.
Moss has 7 drops and 70+ catches for about 90%.

I'm not trying to downplay Welker's season. He's two receptions short of having the 2nd most catches in one season in NFL history.

I'm just saying that I dont view him as a top-5 WR. If he didnt have Moss who has to be accounted for on every play, I dont think the underneath would be as opened up, and I dont think he has the stats he does with Moss and Brady.

But I'm not trying to downplay his accomplishments this year. Like I said, he's the best underneath receiver in the league, and will probably end up with the 2nd most catches in a season in NFL history.

...And as far as the drops, Tom Brady throws a much better ball than Matt Stafford. Drops aren't all on the WR.

1. Andre Johnson
2. Larry Fitz
3. Randy Moss
4. Steve Smith
5. Reggie Wayne
6. Brandon Marshall
7. Calvin Johnson
8. Miles Austin (with a bullet)
9. Marques Colston
10. DeSean Jackson

My gut ratings are weighted toward TDs, 20+ plays and YAC, subjectively adjusted for raw skill, supporting cast and intangibles. Calvin should be higher and Welker really should be on there but I'd rather have the players above him. VJax and Ocho are just off the page and Roddy White and Hines/Holmes are not far behind.

Switch Austin Miles/Miles Austin with Roddy White...WAIT Why No Vincent Jackson plus Colston?

Austin is top 13.

I also wonder how Greg Jennings would rank if he didn't have Donald Driver lining up across from him.

Some of the WR stats in the league are aided by the fact that there isn't a legimate #2 reciever lining up across from them. Miles Austin might be considered by some to fit into this category.
