Touch back rule

how is fumbling it out of bounds the same as fumbling it into the end zone?

How is it different? We don't reward the defense if they don't recover the ball outside the endzone so why should they be rewarded when it's out of the endzone.

Because the endzone is only 10 yards deep..... the D may not recover through no fault of their own... they just run out of space

Here's an idea.............DON'T FUMBLE IN THE ENDZONE

How often does it go out the back of the endzone (when a Seattle player isn't illegally hitting it out)?

Why not just make a rule for going out the back?

Don't they run out of space with the sideline too?

It seems like going out of the way to create a silly rule for an extremely rare occurrence.

So funny how the majority of Raiders fans think the touch back rule is stupid and should be spotted at the point it was fumbled and given back to the team that fumbled. Are you fricken kidding me???

I would venture to guess many on this forum would be saying the same thing had we lost in that fashion. It was a stupid play by Carr, and the Cowboys got an early Christmas gift.

I didn’t hear all this crying and saying it was a bad rule when it happened to Leon Lett in the freaking Super Bowl.....instead all we heard was praise for Beebe’s terrific, no quit hustle.

I prefer to focus on the great hustle and play by Heath rather than the rule in place.

Because the goal line, by rule, has always extended beyond the pylon. It’s the same reason a player scoring a TD doesn’t have to ever even touch the ground in the end zone. Fly over everything, but inside the pylon, and it’s a TD.

Every rule in football now favors the offense. Here we have one rule that keeps guys from fumbling forward into the end zone, and we think that’s unfair to the offense? How about just don’t fumble?

This isn't anywhere else on the field. This is a specific rule for the end zone. If a returner is running a kick back and gets hit at the 10 yard line and fumbles the ball backwards out of the EZ should his team get the ball batack the 10?

I think Dallas should get the ball whenever there's a fumble.

First of there probably was game or two back in the day that is responsible for this rule. Probably to stop a team from intentionally fumbling when in a pile so another team mate could pick it up, just another "risk" if a team tried it.

I do not like the rule but it is the rule. Why is a fumble out of bounds between endzones handled differently than the endzone?

Ya not like it's a new rule, been that way forever.

You don’t get two points when you sack the quarterback in the field of play either. I guess some of you want to change the safety rule as well. you don’t get to add 20 or 25 yards when you catch a punt or kick off in the field of play. I think we should do something about that too.

Has anyone mentioned Ken Stabler and the Holy Roller play? It can't be left up to ref interpretation whether a player is intentionally fumbling the ball forward in an end game situation to gain a potential advantage at a score. If an offense can benefit from an honest fumble resulting in a TD if recovered, it's only fair that a fumble out of bounds be considered a touchback. I see no controversy whatsoever. The only reason this is garnering any attention is because it decided a game. Nothing to see here.

Well anywhere else on the field you can't fumble forward.

That’s not true. Players fumble forward all the time. The forward fumble recovery rule only applies after the two minute warning of each half and on fourth down. So it’s not just the end zone. Fumbles are treated differently on a specific down and with specific amounts of time remaining as well.
There are different rules for different specific situations all over the NFL rulebook. I don’t get the uproar over this one.

I completely understand their frustration, just like I understand the Steeler's with the catch rule.

I understand their frustration. But to me, there is no comparison between the touchback rule and the convoluted rules that define what is and is not a catch.
