Now that Dak is signed, trade Lance to a QB starved team and at least recoup the draft capital we spent acquiring him.
Why would a team trade for a 3rd string quarterback that will be a free agent next offseason? What type of draft choice are you talking about? The Cowboys are on the hook for 5 million no matter if he is traded or not.

It’s quite obvious now it looked like a bargaining tool against Dak. Once they watched PS they had no choice but to sign Dak.
If Lance was perfect this preseason, Dak would have still received the same contract. Only a fool would judge a player on preseason games. Dak was always going to be a Cowboy. The Cowboys got Lance because they wanted a developmental quarterback with tools. A 4th round flyer made it worth it. You guys act like that 4th round pick would have been the next Dak or something.

Lance is raw but his athleticism and traits will always pique interest. I am not saying we would get a ton in a trade, but anything is better than nothing — maybe there is a team open to a trade acquisition that would be willing to part with a conditional pick should he pan out?

I realize he is a free agent next year but a team could conceivably get ahead of that market via trade and can use 2024 to evaluate him on potential and get to experience the player before committing to him long term.

Is there a stale bag of cheetoes you got your eye on?

Seriously,
They showcased Lance this preseason. He monumentally failed. He’s not a QB in this league and has no trade value. He’s still here solely because his 5m contract is gauranteed!

What if Dak gets hurt. You want to depend on Cooper Rush?

I don’t think he monumentally failed. He certainly flashed as a runner at different points, and his traits alone will get him some looks.

He is raw and is a developmental prospect. Teams fall in love with those kinds of prospects all the time.

I’m not saying he has a great market by any stretch, but I think he would absolutely be picked up by a team and given another opportunity to develop

Nothing about him will pique interest at this point. There will be no market for him as a free agent to get ahead of. Players in their fourth year who can’t even secure a backup job don’t get people excited about their potential. That ship has sailed.

That’s exactly what we would be doing. Rush went 5-1 when we needed him to.

If he has to be counted on to play a whole season— we would be in trouble. But playing for a few games? Rush is a capable backup

Someone will get a decent prospect....and might as well throw him in the fire. Sink or swim my friend!

I can see Lance being a solid CFL QB in the next couple of years

I think part of the reason Dak got his new contract yesterday was in due to how poorly Lance played in the preseason. The last game with 5 INTs was the last straw. The Cowboys didn't see a QB they could confidently hand the ball to in 2025. He has no trade value.

He was up for trade and only the Cowboys and Bills were interested in giving up anything more than a fourth round pick for him. If anything his stock went down during preseason. He has little to no trade value unless we would be willing to accept a 7th rounder for him if we could even get that.

Why?

There’s nothing that says Trey can’t develop. Everyone keeps saying he’s green and he hasn’t played much yet they have these weird expectations of him. They didn’t give up anything significant to hold his rights.

Dak lucked into an already prebuilt team situation, has had eight years of actual playing, learning, and being coddled, and he still hasn’t helped the team advance anywhere significant in the playoffs. He’s not going to magically get better.

Dak got his new contract because of Jerry. Any other SB competing organization would’ve moved on.

If my alternative is Trey Lance? Is this a trick question?
My point is you have both. Rush has no arm strength. At least Lance can run. With this defense you can win with a Rush/Lance combination. Hopefully we won’t find out.

The coaches was the reason we were successful. Let’s not overate Rush. He was a free agent and nobody wanted him.

And we can get a decent comp pick for him. Because the contract he gets won't be cheap. He will get paid on potential.
He might account for a 7th rounder, but it's doubtful.

He'll probably get ~$3m, but that doesn't get you anything in the comp calculations especially since he's not going to play any snaps.

Yes trade him, but the fact is no one would trade for him. He can't just plug and play first of all, would have to learn any system. 2nd, he's terrible.
