Trade talks

Greg Ellis and picks will get us a cup of JACK SQUAT!!!!!

Ellis only has about 2-3 years left anyway. It would be wise to get something for him while we can and let Spencer start. No need to let two first round LB's go to waste (Spencer and Carpenter).

Greg Ellis...

What I'd give to take a time machine back to the day Dallas drafted you, switch the card with Moss' name and watch Troy throw bombs to Randy Moss in the twilight of his career.

Sigh.

He won't be on the team in 2010. There are an extremely finite number of 35 year old LBers who count $6M against the cap, and Ellis has a pretty slim shot of being one of them.

Might not be a 34 year old counting for that much either.

Ellis is a liability on and off the field, has been for the past two seasons if not longer. Time to cut out the rot and move on...(Girly Emoticon)

Jerry already said that he wants to get a good look at the younger receivers. Roy is our #1 and Crayton is more than likely our #2. That still leaves Austin, Hurd, and Stanback to battle for the #3, plus at least 1 drafted receiver.

The way I see it, Hurd is almost a Crayton clone, so if we shop Crayton, Hurd can step in and give us the same production, plus Austin and Stanback move up in the depth charts and we have room to groom our rookie WR whoever that is.
I've seen all I need to see from those bums, time for something new.

I hope to heck our playoff hopes are not riding on a 34 year old pass rush specialist. He's at an age where he could easily miss a lot of time too, so getting depth behind him in this draft is critical no matter what we do. He could also fall off a cliff this year physically - again he spent most of his career at DE and they don't play at a high level this long typically unless you have Bruce Smith/Reggie White type talent.

Again, I'm not saying throw him away for peanuts, but at some point we need to find someone who can play that spot because I gaurantee you we are not going to pay a 35 year old $6M to do it in 2010. And I'd like to contend for the playoffs that year too.

If you can get a decent pick for him package to move up for a player, or pick up a "raw" DE who we can work on converting to LB, but still has pass rush ability. May or may not be as effective as Ellis for 2009, but at least you have someone in place for beyond and you have gotten him out of the locker.

Bottom line to me is he aint getting any younger, and he's going to be cut almost for sure next season and we get nothing for him. If there is a buyer for him this season, and a decent price tag, you got to look at the long term.

It will be a lot quieter in Jerry's office too...

We're going to draft an OLB anyway, but you sure don't want to rely on a rookie to contribute right away. They normally don't. Sure, we might get lucky and get a gem that can step in right away, but the chances of that are fairly slim considering we don't make our first draft choice until about 2/3 of the way through the second round.

Well, I don't know what his prorated signing bonus amount is but he's on the books for 2.7 this year, I believe. So, if his bonus is more then that, then yes, it would be a cap hit but I can't see how it would be much more then that and if he were traded, then it would certainly help in the out years. If his signing bonus is like 5 Million and all accelerted into this year, then I might see how that could be problamatic but again, I don't know that it would be that much.

I think his current contract is only a year old. He would cause a fairly substantial hit and we can't absorb any more.

How about we trade Greg Ellis, Patrick Crayton, and Marcus Spears, people everyone seems to hate, for a conditional 7th and.....wait for it..............Dexter Coakley!!!!!!

Plus, the last thing we need to do is get rid of our most experienced and 2nd best (as of right now) receiver. That would be the definition of stupid.

Not if you signed Holt. I'd be ecstatic to change out Crayton for him.

Looks like we'd have to suck up $3 million left on the signing bonus but save his salary of almost $3 million. Looks like Crayton would be just about a wash himself.

Now it would not be you accelerate another 3 million and only gain back 1.5 million in base salary

so you have him on the books for an extra 1.5 million so he goes from a 3 million cap hit to a 4.5 million on the cap

I'd still want to keep Crayton even if we did sign Holt, which I don't think will happen anyway. He'll be too expensive. And he probably only has a couple more years left.
