and just to be clear...
I 100% absolutely believe we need to come out of this draft with an OLB.

It is not priority one but it is a priority.

But you don't ditch Ellis and pray we have all of a sudden after a decade learned to draft an OLB.

As another note this team is trying to move late round picks as it is because we have a ton of them. All the late picks that don't make the team whom we sign will cost us dead cap money. More dead cap money just like Ellis (1.5 in dead cap cash) and (4.x mil) for Crayton.

So late round picks have less value than ever before to the Dallas Cowboys in 2008.

If the trade was a 2nd or 3rd for Ellis and a 6th and a 7th that would be one thing but these thoughts we take a 6th for Ellis straight up or offer 2 proven NFL players plus a 3rd for a 2nd and 4th is goofy.

... and again even if we could conceivably get a deal for a 2 or 3 there is very little chance we would have a backup this year who can rush the passer like Ellis. In fact that chance is probably more like a gasp.

If we want to trade Ellis the time to do so will be during Training Camp when we know who we can turn to as that 3rd OLB and when draft picks are not at their highest value. Look to one of the teams shifting to a 3-4 that lacks pass rushing.

We have 10 or 11 picks. I can't hardly contain my enthusiasm over the thought of watching Jerry once again mindlessly trade up and down all draft weekend.

And what about the upcoming season? Don't know about you, but I'm hoping we're in the playoff hunt this year. Do you really want to go into the season with a 3-4 defense and only two viable pass rushing OLBs? Not me. Ellis isn't a greal player, but he's still a pretty damn good pass rusher. Get rid of him and all we have is Ware and Spencer. No depth. What if one of them get hurt? Who you going to put in? Bobby Carpender? A rookie?

I hope to heck our playoff hopes are not riding on a 34 year old pass rush specialist. He's at an age where he could easily miss a lot of time too, so getting depth behind him in this draft is critical no matter what we do. He could also fall off a cliff this year physically - again he spent most of his career at DE and they don't play at a high level this long typically unless you have Bruce Smith/Reggie White type talent.

Again, I'm not saying throw him away for peanuts, but at some point we need to find someone who can play that spot because I gaurantee you we are not going to pay a 35 year old $6M to do it in 2010. And I'd like to contend for the playoffs that year too.

If you can get a decent pick for him package to move up for a player, or pick up a "raw" DE who we can work on converting to LB, but still has pass rush ability. May or may not be as effective as Ellis for 2009, but at least you have someone in place for beyond and you have gotten him out of the locker.

Bottom line to me is he aint getting any younger, and he's going to be cut almost for sure next season and we get nothing for him. If there is a buyer for him this season, and a decent price tag, you got to look at the long term.

It will be a lot quieter in Jerry's office too...

Not exactly. We'd have to eat Crayton's signing bonus this year and with all the dead $ we already have, that wouldn't be easy to do. We'd gain by getting rid of Ellis, but lose getting rid of Crayton. Pretty much a wash.

Well, I don't know what his prorated signing bonus amount is but he's on the books for 2.7 this year, I believe. So, if his bonus is more then that, then yes, it would be a cap hit but I can't see how it would be much more then that and if he were traded, then it would certainly help in the out years. If his signing bonus is like 5 Million and all accelerted into this year, then I might see how that could be problamatic but again, I don't know that it would be that much.

If the reports about the Pats and Peppers are true, the Pats are offering a 2nd round pick (34) in exchange for Peppers. I mean, I know I might be drinking yellow snow here but we just might be trying to get into that bidding war for Peppers by offering Detroits 2nd rounder (33 overall). I wouldn't put it past Jerry to try something like that. When Jerry sees something he wants, he usually tries to get it.

Good observation. He may be trying to package something for Detroits 2nd rounder, then using that on Peppers. Worst case scenario we have the 33rd overall pick :)

The only thing that would hold it back is that we play the Panthers this year, we are in the same conference as them and it's only 2 spots ahead of the Pats deal. So if I'm the Panthers I'm trading him to somewhere where he won't affect my season, unless they meet in the Superbowl.

Where are we getting Detroit's 2nd rounder?

I believe that Peppers has a No Trade Clause so I think he would have to approve it. I don't know how that would work.

There was plenty of blame to go around, it wasnt just one or two guys.

Romo played poorly. Henry missed an easy tackle on a play that resulted in a TD. The defense gave up a length of the field TD drive in less tha 50 seconds. Crayton never drops anything, drops a perfect throw. Playing Terry Glenn was a mistake. The officiating was horrendous. The OL, which had been great all yr melted down in the 4th qtr.

Romo did not play poorly! Flozell played poorly and had Romo running for his life on every play after the half.

It's in this thread. The discussion was Crayton and Ellis for Detroits 2nd and 4th round picks.

if it results in the kind of drafts we're use to over the past 6 or 7yrs, how could that be a bad thing?

and his "mindlessly trade up and down"last yr resulted in us having extra picks in THIS years draft, which made the Roy Williams deal easier for us to do.

getting Detroits 2nd rounder - GET REAL GUYS! STOP SITTING IN FRONT OF VIDEO games all day and just think. Why the hell would the Lions give a 2nd rounder(#33) overrall to us for Gerg Ellis when, by all accounts they could get Julius peppers for the same damn pick. If the Pats are offering #35 the Lions can beat that!
Please guys, use some rationalisation here.

[/SIZE] IRVING – The Cowboys agreed to a four-year contract with wide receiver and DeSoto native Patrick Crayton on Thursday night, just days away from the regular-season finale in one of the best seasons in team history.
The contract, expected to be signed today, can be worth as much as $14 million. Crayton received a $6 million signing bonus.

Looks like we'd have to suck up $3 million left on the signing bonus but save his salary of almost $3 million. Looks like Crayton would be just about a wash himself.

Apparently it's a 2nd and a 4th for Crayton and Ellis, hahahaha! I'm shaking my head too. But regardless if Detroit has the higher pick than the Pats or not Peppers wouldn't let the trade go through. He wants to play in a 3-4 and has a select few teams he would go to. The Pats and Cowboys are 2 of the 5 he listed. But I get what you're saying, if we could get those picks this deal should already be done.

Step off the ledge.

:laugh2:

Their may not be anything to it at all but, there may be. If you trade the 2nd, straight up for Peppers, all you get is Peppers and his contract. If you trade for Ellis, Crayton and a third, then you get more players that may be able to fit your scheme, plus a 3rd and a much more managable cap. I mean, I don't know that there is anything to this or not but who knows?

So is it Ellis that is being shopped or Ellis and Crayton???

As much as I cant stand Crayton for single handedly costing us that playoff game against the G-men, if we trade him then we are very thin at WR.

We would have RW11, Austin, Hurd, and Stanbach.

That WR core is pretty thin, especially if RW11 gets hurt or just sucks like last year.
Jerry already said that he wants to get a good look at the younger receivers. Roy is our #1 and Crayton is more than likely our #2. That still leaves Austin, Hurd, and Stanback to battle for the #3, plus at least 1 drafted receiver.

The way I see it, Hurd is almost a Crayton clone, so if we shop Crayton, Hurd can step in and give us the same production, plus Austin and Stanback move up in the depth charts and we have room to groom our rookie WR whoever that is.
