Not at all.
We didn't even play a lot of Cover 2 when Kiffin was here. In 2014 we played Cover 3 and then we went to man-Cover 1 in 2015 and this past season we moved back to Cover 3, man, Cover-1 and once in a while some Cover 2.
The defense was generally better when we could switch up between zone and man coverage which is really a fundamental of the NFL. If you can't switch up the coverages effectively, then the offense knows where to go with the ball and your chances for creating turnovers are less.
The fact is that Carr nor Claiborne were really good in man coverage. So while we have a D-Coordinator that may prefer more zone...they couldn't play man that effecitvely even if they wanted to. Claiborne was much better in man than zone and overall was better than average at man...but couldn't stay healthy and wanted more than we were willing to give him.
I think we are looking for more versatility and playmaking ability from our corners. Anthony Brown is a good example as he's a zone corner that has played zone in college and tackles well while having good speed to man on go and fade routes.
Safeties, for the most part, don't have that designated SS and FS roles these days unless you're Kam Chancellor because Earl Thomas covers a ridiculous amount of ground. Safeties have to switch off the responsibilities and while Byron is very good, he's not that good to have a limited coverage safety like Wilcox (who plays man coverage pretty well, stinks in zone) and Church (plays short and intermediates zones pretty well, can't play man or deep zone responsibilities).
Versatility and tackling...look for those features leading up to the season opener.
