This is sort of a dying art, but is deadly effective when mastered and opens up a lot of options, particularly playaction. It’s one of the reasons Brady is so effective. Hard to become an all-time great if you can’t do it.

Dak Prescott operated exclusively out of the shotgun at Mississippi State.
He made the transition quite nicely.
 
To be honest, I'd say that many or most football players don't really like playing football. It pays them a lot of money and they're good at it, so they go do it, but they don’t really enjoy it.

IMO, Tony Romo loves golf more than football. If you offered him $100M to play quarterback and $100M to golf professionally, he'd be golfing. But the way it shook out, Romo was a top 10 quarterback in the world and probably a fringe top-1000 golfer. He could make top dollar at QB, or a penny on that dollar drifting in and and out of the PGA, so he played QB. And he was a professional about it - I don't ever want to hear that man's toughness questioned - but I don't think he loved it.

Amari Cooper - same deal. He's famous for his RBF and clearly isn't getting hyped to play the game, but I guarantee you that every poster here has got out of bed before to work a crappy job that paid less than 1% of what he makes.

Does Lawrence love football - I don't know. But if he's a professional about it, he'll be fine. I haven't seen anything to doubt that.

Watch how many snaps Urban Meyer's teams took under center the last gazillion years.

If Trevor works as hard as Dak then he might be able to make the transition too. But if he doesn’t, then Trevor is going to find out quickly how difficult playing QB in the NFL can be.

If Urban Meyer expects to have success in the NFL with a QB who can’t play under center, then he is likely going to be just another great college coach who fails in the NFL.

With a QB under center the play options are limitless. You can do everything. That’s not the case with the shotgun, and opposing defense will exploit that weakness. It’s a big reason Tom Brady is so effective even at age 43.
 
Even if you view this as a red flag. And mind you. It does raise some questions but, you would really need to know Trevor more than just what this article provides to make the determination.

but even with this red flag. He is still clearly the best QB prospect in the draft.


All that being said. Any QB coming out of college can bust. Any single one.

Even as good as he is as a prospect. There’s still a 50% chance he never lives up to high expectations like being an all pro/pro bowl level QB.

Put it this way.

Lawrence was the one and only player in the country who could've opted out this season even though he could not improve his probable draft position.
Lawrence easily could've done that and not risked injury or devaluation due to playing with a much worse oline than in the past.

I'm not saying he's a saint for playing, but more than any other player in college this year, he really did have the easy out and did not take it.


Nobody has ever even hinted that Lawrence was not a very hard worker and a driven competitor.
I get that Skip and Shannon are just making a show entertaining, but it was really bizarre....and frankly, very immature and short-sighted..
 
Here is a clip of Tom Brady highlights when he was at Michigan. For the vast majority of the plays in the clip Brady was under center. His play action was beautiful. Just beautiful. In retrospect is no wonder he made the transition to the NFL so seamlessly.



Maybe Trevor Lawrence can learn to play like this. But maybe he can’t. Time will tell.

Like I have always said, talent will only take you so far. You have to have an intense desire to WIN. Having said that, this reporting is total ********. I want to see Lawrence’s own words on this and not from some high school coach.

When it is all said and done....I won't be shocked to see Zach Wilson have the better career.....and Lawrence ends up being Andrew Luck 2.0 :popcorn:

Well, that is the safest bet you could make on any college player who has yet to take an NFL snap.

Even if they are one of the best prospects in a decade, they all are still just”prospects”
So few become all-time greats

Trevor is a great football player and fiery competitor who belongs in the NFL. Yes he has chance to fail but he has all the tools to make it and he has won early at every level he has played. You put him on the Cowboys and fix the defense and Dallas is in the SB. Right now you fix the defense and Dak might win one playoff game.
