Troy Aikman: 'Unless practices change,' Cowboys may not win a title in another 20 years either

I don't get the feeling anything is being built here. I get the feeling Troy is right. It doesn't make him smart, it just indicates he's not stupid.

Or he has at least talked to people around the organization and he compares now versus then.

Not exactly new news, but he is just calling it as he sees it.

"I don't know," said Aikman. "This team, for 20 years, really has been so inconsistent. And unless practices change, I don't see that changing any time soon. You look back at last year and 12-4 and get excited about that, but was 12-4 really what this team is or is 8-8? I don't think 4-12 is this year because of the injuries that occurred.

"But you've got to do it more than once every seven or eight years before you can say, 'Hey, the things that we're doing are really paying off.' It's been a long history of frustration and up-and-down years, and, for the most part, disappointment.

"And I think you've got to be able to look back on something and say, 'OK, we're building something here and these things that we do pay off,' but I haven't seen that, so I don't anticipate any time soon anything being any different from what we've seen the last 20 years."

Whatever Troy, don't sit so close to Buck anymore. Your catching his jerkhead.

They need a real "Football guy". A general manager that is held to any sort of standard.

Ha ha ha. A guy with dirt under his fingernails right? ha ha. Like Parcells right? Bad shopper, but ok coach. No direction, thats a new one.

Yea but is he talking about practice, or practice

That was my question...does he mean actual weekday practice? Like the kind Romo usually skips on Wednesday.

Or did he mean practices, like activities, actions...dare I say processes?

Personally I think he meant the latter.

Jerry runs this club with his heart, which to me is the "practice" that Aikman may have been referring to...

I took the "practice" as what decisions and structure the organizations have made the past 20 years.

We are so accustomed to this current org, we have clearly forgotten the immense FO talent across the league.

Find a director of personnel or scouting at a successful franchise and hire them as your GM. It's not that hard. Not Parcells. Someone with actual football knowledge to oversee all football operations and answer to ownership.

Nothing the Cowboys organization does currently (other than print money and built uber-expensive stadiums) lives up to the most valuable and prominent brand in football. You've nailed it in your definition of practices.

I don't think Troy meant actual daily practices need to change, he is talking about the decisions the franchise has made over the last 20 seasons and how there is no direction or philosophy that is guiding this organization and that has to change.

He is basically saying that if you do the same thing over and over again, why would you expect different results?

The voice of reason!!!!

JJ could start with hiring a competent coach that knows what the hell he's doing and knows how to build a team.

When I was younger I had a buddy that just got out of college. He would throw his resume out for jobs he wasn't qualified for, and jobs that weren't even in his field. He would always get them and could negotiate bonuses, large salaries, etc. Why, how? Because he would say the right things and BS his way through the interview process. It was amazing! He then would get the job and have NO clue how to do the job. He winged it and eventually would leave or get fired. Ladies and gents, this is JG. He says all the right things, but doesn't know how to implement anything, or how to truly coach! I'm convinced of it.

Perhaps because it is so convoluted, desultory, and without rhyme or reason? What is this team's philosophy?

Yeah...that's it.

It's Troy being Troy. Was practice convoluted in the Parcells era? Y'know..that was within the past 20 years.

It wasn't. Troy is a joke and likes the publicity he gets for bashing the Cowboys. And like I said, a former teammate of Troy's told me the exact opposite a few years ago. He just doesn't have an ax to grind like Troy.

I don't think he meant what was going on in the daily athletic practices....I think he meant the internal front office practices of the Cowboys , ie. how they run the organization.

Then he should say it. Until then I can only interpret it as such.

It's the truth. Following this team is a huge waste of time.

The whole thing started falling apart in 1995.

Yakuza, I think he was refering to personnel and scheme configurations.

Last season was a tough one for the team. The give and take between the offense was not nearly equal. The offense quit scoring and the defense couldn't get a turnover. I easily see your point. But with both Dez and Tony in the mix...healthy, the offense can be a true strength.

But the defense doesn't yet carry a top team's load yet.

Having watched the movement from a cap strapped and low talent low of five seasons ago, I see progress...but as to final goals, I think he is right in the team needs to gain considerable ground and not with just positional journeymen.

I think you're making excuses for Troy.

He said practices. He didn't mention anything else and I don't know why anybody would interpret it any differently.
