I have two major grips with the show now that we are 6 episodes in. Everyone speaks in the same tone.... Three of the four leads speak in the same deep riddles as if they went to the same college. Also the show is convoluted with lead character back stories... Four lead character back stories, along with the mystery of the murder and its details is a lot to explain in 8 episodes. It leaves some key details feeling unimportant, or abandoned.

I have the same problems with season 2 that I did with season 1. The characters don't seem like real people to me.

It will be about the "cults" if that's what you like to call them, I prefer to call them "cabals" because they do their business in secret. The person who created "True Detective" is trying to speak some real truth. Secret societies do control the world, the detectives in these stories are the real "true detectives", because they get closer to the cabal and their secrets than most could ever dream... In season one, we see how the elitist secret societies acquire children and others for ritual torture and sacrifice, and in the end the elites are protected from within. In season 2, we will see how the cabal controls the transportation system, and for what purpose, and I'm pretty sure it's not just about money.

That is what I like.

Three underdog underachievers team up and take on and take down so serious criminals. Alone they are weak and flawed, but together for whatever reason, they bring out the best in each other.

Even when served up the easy solution, the Mexicans, they fight on.

Just like Rust and Cohle in Season 1. After killing Reggie LeDeoux they that wasn't justice.

The two orphaned kids would be about the same ages as the mayor's two kids. Just a thought.

I think they may be the killers, but not related to the Mayor.

They just want their Blue Diamonds back. Maybe the girl was a pro and found out Caspere had them so the brother tortures him to find them.

Who knows but I can't believe it is only 2 episodes left. But then football starts!!!!!

Athena is going to catch a bad one for her sisters actions....
It never ends well for the reformed ***** with the heart of gold.

That would suck, but it seems too obvious.

Looked like Ani was hugging her Dad in the previews.

Laura/Erica.... right because of that in depth 1:30 seconds that's she's been on this show so far....(not to mention the 15 secs of who's possibly her brother)

Anyway, despite how convoluted the show is, it has been enjoyable, especially the last 4 episodes. Quirky, and interesting. I think Nic Pizzolatto's ego has made him forgot that film is mostly a visual medium. There seems to be a schism between the writing and the visual story telling aspects, last season everything seemed cohesive.

Looking forward to the Last Episode.... closure (even if its "forced")

Yeah, I saw the first season last year in within a few weeks and I enjoyed it but wasn't enamored by it. Now I've been watching each episode of season 2 as it airs because I have HBO Go, and at the same time, my girl has been watching season 1 because she's never seen it. So I catch some audio of whichever episode she's watching and it makes me realize how drastically different the quality of the characters and dialogues were between seasons. I kinda like the actual story from season 2 better, but the script was just vastly better in season 1.

I don't know which way is up, down, left or right really, but I am intrigued!

The four main characters are doing some acting, especially VV and McAdams. I told the wife from the get-go that they will all die in some fashion. So far, one of four :(

Greek tragedy is the best description that I have seen used yet.

SPOILERS

I hope the finale is good. Although the Season 1 finale was a bit disappointing in that we didn't get to see the biggest picture (how the people of power were connected to the cults), but at least it left us wondering more. They got the bad guy but the bigger bad guys were still left to wonder about.

I hope this finale is similar. Based on a bunch of Reddit theories, many people are hypothesizing that the two killers are the siblings all grown up and exacting revenge (the secretary and the camera man). There are even some images of them online from the show giving each other suspicious looks. And a lot of people have made a strong case.

The disappointing thing about that is that it would make the bigger picture (the corruption and the strange cult-like gatherings) meaningless. I like that both seasons have been trying to expose high-level corruption, and a simple who-dun-it murder mystery would simplify the plot.

Laura/Erica... was hinted at as strong suspect in the last episode. Her brother is most likely the set photographer who told Ray about the wild parties. This is actually what I don't care about... The killer/killers is both after thoughts, as well as many of the maze of people who were a part of Catalyst.. (in some form).... I just think there wasn't any development for most of these characters, they barely got any screen time. The fallout after is the most interesting story. This is I why I think there is a big schism in the show... I think Pizzalato is trying to be too clever, ultimately being forced to tie loose ends..... rule number one in Visual Writing/Filmmaking... "Show it, don't say it."

I do enjoy the quirkiness of the show... and I think the different directors (there has been multiple this season) have done a good job of conveying that the characters are trapped in hell... the colors of fire has been a consistent theme. The score during the Orgy scene was right out of a 70's noir movie... DePalma esque....

Last season Cary Fukunaga, the director of the entire first season, seized a level of control that Pizzalato wasn't happy about. Fukunaga is a film director, in motion pictures the director has the most creative control (vs tv). Pizzalato, as the show runner & the writer did not invite Fukunega back, and it shows in the work.

That's interesting. I don't know anything about the behind-the-scenes of the show. But that's interesting that the creator of possibly the most successful single season in television history didn't invite back the director. I think egos have destroyed more dynasties than anything in history. I wonder where the 90s Bulls and Shaq/Kobe Lakers would have gone without egos getting in the way. I enjoyed this season though. But it feels like a much different show.

Fukunaga and Pizzalato both said Fukunaga was too busy to come back..... But in several interviews Pizzalato admitted their struggles. The set director in episode three (i think that's the ep) was supposed to be a mock on Fukunaga, who is still one of the executive producers... But exec producers in filmmaking is one of two things, the money person, or a name to push the project... at this point Fukunaga is just a name, just like woody, and Matthew.

Here is a good article on the suspected riff between the former director and Pizzalato.

Oh yeh, In that article you will see that Pizzalato has been accused (and kind of proven) of plagiarizing Russ Cole's most prominent lines from author Thomas Ligotti, and others.
Which explains the awkwardness of some of the "deep lines" this season...

http://lovecraftzine.com/2014/08/04...tective-plagiarize-thomas-ligotti-and-others/

Examples:
COHLE: We became too self-aware. Nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law.

“We know that nature has veered into the supernatural by fabricating a creature that cannot and should not exist by natural law, and yet does.” (The Conspiracy Against the Human Race p.111)

COHLE: … we are things that labor under the illusion of having a ‘self’…each of us programmed with total assurance that we’re each somebody, when in fact everybody is nobody.

“And the worst possible thing we could know — worse than knowing of our descent from a mass of microorganisms — is that we are nobodies not somebodies, puppets not people.” (CATHR, p. 109)

Everybody is nobody…” (CATHR, p. 199)

I will hate episode 4 of this season for years, because I was going to bail on the season until the amazing ending of that episode roped me back in. This season goes on my "spite" list along with Lost season 3, Sopranos season 6a and SOA season 3.

In fact, I'm getting angry just thinking of that terrible SOA season 3 intro music, so I am blaming True Detective for making me remember that.

Wasn't a fan of the season 2 of TD. Think they tried to do too much in only 8 hours, with four main characters.

The finale was fitting for how the season went.
