You go for the block which they executed. They didn't count on the ghost of Sam Williams on special teams popping up. They had a better chance to win the game than relying on a 1 in 20 "what if" chance with Turpin. They would have been at midfield if the dude doesn't touch the ball.

They don't go for the block and Cincy directional punts it out of bounds, then what? Or they get good coverage and Turpin fair catches, then what? Turpin is good but he's not automatic.
Right On!

The more I think about it i think our player just reacted. The ball as on him and instinct was to grab it. I know he feels like crap. I'm not going to pile on him.

Nah it was a stupid idea just set up a return to Turpin. The players and coaches are too dumb to take unnecessary risks.

Aubrey is your FG kicker . Your offense doesn’t have to get far to give him a chance to win the game . This situation screamed SET up the RETURN ,
The offense had just finished back to back drives that netted 13 yards on 7 plays. Both 3 and outs were it not for a 14-yard Dowdle run on the first play of one of them. We weren't getting far.

What makes anyone think they would even kick it to Turpin?

The "out of bounds is always a short punt" argument isn't true. Punters can kick it to the sideline and only lose maybe 10 yards which isn't significant.

I can’t believe we are questioning a play that actually worked. The problem was the guy that was called up from the practice squad not knowing the rules of the game. If that dummy knew the rules we have the ball at Cincy’s 45 with less than 2 minutes to go in the game. That’s already in Aubrey’s range. Let’s say the block didn’t happen and the punter nails a 50 yarder that Turpin catches at our 21. Then let’s say Turpin returns the punt 15 yards to our own 36. However, there is holding on the play. Because that is what our stupid and undisciplined team does in big moments. Now with the holding call we are starting at our own 11 and the Bengals still have 3 timeouts. I could see a scenario of a 3 and out and Cincy getting the ball to win it. My point is that no matter how we played it our stupid team and coaches were probably going to find a way to lose the game. If not for a gift missed extra point we probably lose that Washington game.

I have done a 180 on this after sleeping on it. I was irate that a punt block was called(evidently it wasn’t) last night. Any time a punt is blocked, it is a good thing. There is no guarantee that Turpin doesn’t muff it or penalties aren’t called to move the ball back even further.

Now, if Cincy was punting from inside the 10, I would want a return set up in that situation. Just another fluke play that one guy got caught up in.

Mistake and error many are thinking is that an all out block punt was called by Bones..

Even jerry is mistakenly errant on this.

The punt blocker No.41 simply beat his man on the line and blocked it....AO just panicked and tried to pick it up.
Exactly what is he supposed to do? Stop? He blocks it and takes it to the house he's a hero. He doesn't know his teammates are morons and don't know the rules.

I am not angry at the player as instincts kick in.

At 5-8, its not like it cost us the playoffs or lost a playoff game.

Stupid play. But it happens

Wow…..some of you should never take your lead from an idiot like Jerry Jones.
a blocked punt is like a turnover. It was a perfect call with perfect execution. We would have had the ball on the Cinncy 45 yard line.
Saying calling for a punt block was wrong is like watching Turpin return a punt, have it called back for a penalty, and saying he should have fair caught it.

One of the dumbest football takes ever.

It's not dumb at all to disagree with calling for a block there, it's just a disagreement on strategy. Neither side is right or wrong on this one.

The punt block was the perfect call and was executed perfectly.....it would have set the cowboys up already on the outskirts of field goal range....

On the other hand, not knowing the rules and touching the ball past the line of scrimmage was something only a dumbsss would do.....

2 minutes left and they are punting. We have the best punt returner in the NFL and the best FG kicker who can hit from 70. Why would you risk trying to block the kick????........ and then the players don't know the rules?
Because of maybe....what we actually did? We blocked the freaking kick. Best possible result you can ask for on a punt play.

You have Turpin on the return and you try to block a punt? that makes no sense, This coaching staff is just bad.

The soft zone Zimmer uses is terrible you are taking away your top CB's by having them play too far off the ball so its hard to get interceptions
If that idiot doesn’t touch the ball, we win on a FG. Big Mac didn’t trust our offense (and he was right), and they did partially block the punt. I like that Big Mac was aggressive.
