The plan was a rebuild on an aged team. We're a young, debt free, and competitive team that managed the transition from Romo to a new QB, and the associated transition of the WR squad.

I'm not addressing the Hill pick itself. We'll see on him.

But we spent our highest pick on DT since 91, and that was the highest pick we had available after trading our first for Cooper. That's attention to the DL. So is signing Quinn. And Lawrence. This offseason was all about the DL.

If you want to talk about NFC championships, I'll point to our coaching in the playoffs. Or just coaching period. Linehan didn't make the most of what we had, or sufficiently develop Dak. Marinelli got pantsed in our last two playoff losses. And Garrett played his part in the loss to GB.

Building the roster is probably what we're best at right now. That it hasn't overcome the hole it started in, or our weakness at Xs and Os doesn't persuade me to dump the build through the draft strategy. I'm more worried we're going back to the "can't let our guys go cuz we're so close" strategy that doomed the 00s.

We were going to play Lawrence because we had nothing else at RDE. Small school, Boise State, and we reached to get the best available to have something at RDE. I didn't say he didn't pan out til year 4. 1 sack in his first year and a half. From our RDE. Project. If that's acceptable non-project performance to you, then Hill will probably get over that bar.

Anyone who didn't think he was a project was just drinking the kool-aid. I doubt we reach for him if his name wasn't Demarcus.

And out of that list of 9 from the last 9 years of 2nd round draft picks, 3 of them have been either total busts, let go or unable to get on the field and perform up to their draft status for whatever reason (Escobar, Carter, Gregory), 1 has never had 1 full healthy season (Lee), 1 has been drastically overpaid for the average contributions he has performed on the field (Crawford), and the remaining 4 are still working to write their own stories while wearing the star on their helmets.

That leaves you batting 0.444444 at best with the last 9 years' worth of 2nd round picks (9 total picks). Doesn't sound too good to be thumping your chest and bragging about, does it? Plus, like I said before, that's not including the previous 5+ years of 2nd round picks that were total duds!

    Wanna try again?

....why the hell Marinelli still here, is mind boggling. These kind of moves impedes us every year. It kills us in the end.

Can we at least agree that Hill is a project of another order of magnitude? He's too far from being good to take in round 2. He didn't dominate the AAC. He wasn't even a starter on his own team. At least Dlaw had some success in college and you could actually see the raw talent. This kid has no business in an NFL camp.

How does spending 8M on a one year deal make the long term cap situation worse?

It really doesn’t unless you bank on constantly trying to roll capnslace forward.

McCoy at 8MM this year would have little impact on the cap a year, two, three years down the road.

If you're referring to wasted 2nd round picks, which is what you originally wrote, how does over paying one of them apply? As far as I can tell, and as of right now, it's just Escobar, Carter, and Gregory to some extent out of that list of 9. None of the other 6 are flat out busts, and most of them either are really good or are looking good.

He has been performing at a high level that if he were doing it with a star on his helmet, people would be losing their minds.

Instead, we have the defensive tackle version of Taco Charlton on our hands right now.

I will put it on record right now.

Hill is a nice kid, but I just do not see the killer in him.

If Hill doesn’t amount to what they expect and Marinelli is still here and has influence on who gets drafted, it’s going to be disappointing.

I think Marinelli retires after this year and leaves someone holding the bag on Hill. Then you will see Jerry, Stephen, Will and maybe Richard having to apologize for him. You know, like they are doing for Charlton now.

    crawford was 3rd round pick.
dlaw, lee have been probowlers - beyond the measure of success for these stats
jaylon is a multiyear starter with pro bowl potential
    chido will be multiyear starter
u cannot even count cwilliams as he only has had one year of stats
or since u want to doom hill after 1 preseason game, so anything is possible...
these are nfl stats for draft picks becoming a multiyear starter
lee is a success by most measures including this one
    escobar is the total failure
even carter was a starter here and else where
note the success probability of dl in 2nd round is 26% so those are the average odds for the position

    1st Round - OL (83%) LB (70%) TE (67%) DB (64%) QB (63%) WR (58%) RB (58%) DL (58%)
    2nd Round - OL (70%) LB (55%) TE (50%) WR (49%) DB (46%) QB (27%) DL (26%) RB (25%)
    3rd Round - OL (40%) TE (39%) LB (34%) DL (27%) WR (25%) DB (24%) QB (17%) RB (16%)
    4th Round - DL (37%) TE (33%) OL (29%) LB (16%) WR(12%) DB (11%) RB (11%) QB (8%)
    5th Round - TE (32%) DB (17%) WR (16%) OL (16%) DL (13%) RB (9%) LB (4%) QB (0%)
    6th Round - TE (26%) OL (16%) DL (13%) WR (9%) DB (8%) RB (6%) LB (5%) QB (0%)
    7th Round - DB (11%) OL (9%) QB (6%) WR (5%) DL (3%) LB (2%) RB (0%) TE (0%)

I do think that our db’s will all play better with a more dominant front, so I was Ok with the pick. My concern from this game is that Hill didn’t flash at all against the lower level of competition. Considering our only other DT upgrade this offseason is Chris Covington, that worries me some.

I remain hopeful that Hill will be everything they think he can be, we just need it to be this year so we don’t get bulldozed again by teams like the Colts and Rams.

"Just one more cookie won't make me fat."

It will just make you a little fatter. And the more cookies you eat, the fatter you get.

Are you never going to ask for that 8mil again? There's always another player to sign. And you can play this game every year.

@Pantera_Cowboy69 included Crawford on his list of 2nd rounders, not me. I simply obliged to his list.

    What?

Maybe next year you use the 8MM from McCoy to sign J Smith to an extension. Or you use it for another FA to fill a hole for 2020. Maybe they use it to bring in a vet CB to add depth because they let Jones walk? I mean here dozens and dozens of ways to use that money to make the team better. Shoot maybe they might have brought McCoy back for another year because Hill didn’t develop like they had hoped or they couldn’t resign Collins.

One year deals in FA are where the real bargains often are too.

    Your response is peculiar.
