Turpin Replacement?

I believe he's the backup kickoff returner and Mingo might be the backup punt returner based on use. Malik Davis is probably in the mix at KR (although the fumble against Arizona doesn't help him) and Caleb Downs might be a special-occasions PR.
Davis behind Izzy on the depth chart.

Cause Izzy can KR and was All American RB.

Don't see it. Davis is the No. 2 back. Izzy will be on the practice squad.

Abanikanda didn't play that much in the last preseason game, but I don't think what he showed was particularly good. I do remember him missing a block on a blitz pickup.

That’s one of the cuts I’m watching. 8)

Where is all this Turpin hate coming from?
ST coach isn't good enough to get much out of him and Turpin isn't useful enough as a WR. If all were gonna do is fair catch on ST i'd rather save that spot for a guy who can contribute on offense more. Not hate from me just want to better use the roster.

Who do we have on the roster that could return punts and kickoffs if we were to trade or cut Kavonte Turpin? Seems like Mingo and Camden Brown could both play special teams and give you more versatility on offense. I know Caleb Downs has returned kicks in the past but not sure I want to put more on his plate
We don't need to replace him we need to block for him!

But they are not They do not play the same positions you're talking about two dudes that would play outside their X and Z they are not inside guys with speed that can do motion and the things that also Turpin does in special teams he's a 2 for one he's a bonus he got paid for doing both things and last year as bad a season as everyone says as he had he had some of the longest plays from scrimmage that's what he brings at WR Ford and he's not being replaced by players who actually would play behind Pickens and Lamb not the type of things that Turpin offers he is not replaceable this year unless they find a way to turn Blue into that guy most likely next year I don't care how good these other receivers look they don't do what Turpin does he's the fastest guy on the team unless we see a foot race between him and Blue I mean that's why you have to have speed on this team and he is also a special teams ace regardless of the drop off..

Great for mingo and brown, They are not as good as Flournoy that is who they be competing with because Turpin is on his own on what he does And whether you like it or not you're not replacing him this year so get over it brown is probably being cut and stashed on the practice squad or something else and you're not gonna like it but they did it with Flournoy as well not over Turpin huh that's weird I find it the irony here that you don't see how the coaches see a lot of these players Just like Bell most of us thought he'd be cut but apparently if you listen that is not what the coaches have planned so you can take your fantasy Football League And keep it in your pocket because that's not what the coaches think of these players. and keep it in your pocket because that's not what the coaches think of these players.

I just heard that about Hunter as well even though he's replaceable he doesn't do anything special As a matter of fact we should cut him Ohh but he's also the backup snapper on special teams and he does some other things on special teams and they're not getting rid of a guy who's a multi tooled guy just like Turpin they're taking up more roster spots with multiple people versus one..
I don't disagree with what you're saying.
But you're missing my point. Which is that regardless of what he does well, in the very near future he won't be needed as much as a true WR like Brown and Mingo will be needed. They offer more than what you get from him. And remember that I am thinking in the long term not the short term,
And don't get me wrong, he's a decent player who does some good things. His speed is nothing to sneeze at. He fills a niche right now. But his skill set is one that can be replaced fairly easily. Almost every single year there are under sized super fast guys who come into the league.
Also consider that he may net you something useful in a trade too. Would Mingo or Brown? No because teams know you are probably going to release them.

I understand he plays a different position, he's faster than them and returns kicks. But on offense he's just a gadget player, who is used as such. Blue or ??? can be that gadget guy if needed.

And the reason I think the bigger guys are more valuable long term is because they probably will not be willing/able to keep both GP and Lamb beyond this season. Not unless something completely out of the ordinary or drastic happens. So a true X or Z receiver will be needed as the #3 WR. One that can make plays and fill in case of injury. They have a couple of good options for that role here on the team right now, but may not be able to keep them, if they keep Turp.

So what I am saying is that if Blue can do that job good enough for now, (or someone else like maybe WR A Smith whom they just drafted in the 4th rd, who could probably make it to the PS much easier than Brown would), it makes more sense to keep the X WR that is already in house, who you may very much need next season. And if Blue or whomever isn't good enough to do the job of Turpin long term you will know it, then you try to go find that guy instead.

Anthony Smith has the speed which is what you need to replace Turpin . He can be a return man WR and run the Jet Sweeps instead of Lamb getting dragged around . If you could get a 4 for the 27 draft for Turpin buy the plane ticket
Smith has never returned a punt or kick.

Is it simply “fast = returner”?

Turpin is a sixth, fifth at best

And he can make big plays in the passing game. Our st sucked last year but he still led the league in kr yds and was second team all pro
Yep. He's an NFL leader and people want to get cute and try something new, so we can make room for a bench warmer playing behind Pickens, Lamb and Flournoy!

I feel this is inaccurate. Maybe it wasn’t meant to he the main thrust of your position but its indicative of a broad assumption by many fans.

Raw athletic track measurements are absolutely not an indicator of success as a return specialist.

Returning kicks is like playing Tetris or entering the matrix. On kickoffs there are a bunch of big and fast players streaming down the field at angles designed to disguise the coverage and force the returner into bad decisions.

The returner has to see it all in a split second, make an immediate decision while also seeing what their second decision will be once the coverage commits.

The new kick return rules reward mental processing and spatial awareness more than ever. The returner has to be patient and smart. It’s about decision making in the face of opposing teams sdheme, space and lane discipline.

Finally, ball security.

What got Traeshawn Holden cut the day after the first preseason game? It wasn’t because he didn’t score a touchdown, it was because he botched a return. This was the darling of the 2025 training camp and one play made him unemployed.

Turpin has lost 2 fumbles in his career. That’s a microscopic number. There are comparisons to every Cowboy receiver as well as the GOAT return man that prove it.

Touchdowns happen 1% of the time in the return game.

What happens 100% of the time is decision making, field position management and ball security.

I jsut think folks believe being a returner is a low value anybody can do it type of job.

Not one of the 32 teams in the NFL would cut Turpin if he was their punt returner.

I think you may get more than a 6th . As far as Smith this entire TC given his speed the ST coach should have had him fielding punts and kicks to cross this bridge .

Look here's a short answer they're not cutting Turpin this year and if it's at the expense of one of those other two they're on our team for a reason that means they can be found and cheap..

Let me repeat they will not cut Turpin this year so why are we having this conversation it's going to be at the expense of somebody and I really don't care as long as we have the people on this team to win as much games as we can this year and as good as we can to be in the playoffs I don't care about next year or three years from now.

You have seen so many wide receivers that we have found like Miles Austin Cedric Wilson and others And now it's Mingo and Brown I mean Brown just fell on her lap you can get guys like that all the time I know you were going to say no and I'm saying it's obvious 'cause it's right in front of us it's not even the entirely we're talking about just the Cowboys there are more out there..

You cannot affect your team building on wide receiver 5 and wide receiver 6 you cannot have that way in on who you keep and don't keep..

Is why I said yes maybe next year you find blue in this position they're going to have to work them in this year and figure out can he even feel the punt consistently can he even fIELD a kick consistently,

You know not muff a punt and cost us the game.. And then you add in offense that would be three positions in one player because not every punt returner can also feel kicks not every kick returner can't they usually have to use different people.. And again I'm sorry but worried about a possession wide receiver when you already have one that can break the top off a defense that's also playing sts and He's already paid..

Again next year we'll have to reassess this but if we lose a guy like Brown it's just like I've seen Cropper and I've seen Brooks these dudes were lighting it up It is what it is..

I'll tell you what (bobby), in my best hank hill voice, we will get our answers from the cut down so lets talk Wednesday..

I think it's going to be less complex than some fans might think.

I think because of speed (Blue) and size (Mafah) and they were draft picks last year, the staff preferred that they win the backup job. But Davis, who is not particularly fast or big, just kept showing up, like he did last year when he averaged 4.6 YPC when they called on him to be the backup.

I think we'll keep Davis and Blue, because of the changeup he offers, and have no problem getting Mafah and Abanikanda on the PS. Now, one of those two might can play well enough to catch the eye of another team, but I'm not sure they can to the point that any team would want to give them a spot on their 53.

Why would we even think about cutting Turpin Time at this moment? Salary cap? Bad teammate? Underperforming? I dont think any of that applies, personally.
