I believe he's the backup kickoff returner and Mingo might be the backup punt returner based on use. Malik Davis is probably in the mix at KR (although the fumble against Arizona doesn't help him) and Caleb Downs might be a special-occasions PR.

Abanikanda didn't play that much in the last preseason game, but I don't think what he showed was particularly good. I do remember him missing a block on a blitz pickup.

Where is all this Turpin hate coming from?

ST coach isn't good enough to get much out of him and Turpin isn't useful enough as a WR. If all were gonna do is fair catch on ST i'd rather save that spot for a guy who can contribute on offense more. Not hate from me just want to better use the roster.

Who do we have on the roster that could return punts and kickoffs if we were to trade or cut Kavonte Turpin? Seems like Mingo and Camden Brown could both play special teams and give you more versatility on offense. I know Caleb Downs has returned kicks in the past but not sure I want to put more on his plate

But they are not They do not play the same positions you're talking about two dudes that would play outside their X and Z they are not inside guys with speed that can do motion and the things that also Turpin does in special teams he's a 2 for one he's a bonus he got paid for doing both things and last year as bad a season as everyone says as he had he had some of the longest plays from scrimmage that's what he brings at WR Ford and he's not being replaced by players who actually would play behind Pickens and Lamb not the type of things that Turpin offers he is not replaceable this year unless they find a way to turn Blue into that guy most likely next year I don't care how good these other receivers look they don't do what Turpin does he's the fastest guy on the team unless we see a foot race between him and Blue I mean that's why you have to have speed on this team and he is also a special teams ace regardless of the drop off..

I just heard that about Hunter as well even though he's replaceable he doesn't do anything special As a matter of fact we should cut him Ohh but he's also the backup snapper on special teams and he does some other things on special teams and they're not getting rid of a guy who's a multi tooled guy just like Turpin they're taking up more roster spots with multiple people versus one..

I don't disagree with what you're saying.
But you're missing my point. Which is that regardless of what he does well, in the very near future he won't be needed as much as a true WR like Brown and Mingo will be needed. They offer more than what you get from him. And remember that I am thinking in the long term not the short term,
And don't get me wrong, he's a decent player who does some good things. His speed is nothing to sneeze at. He fills a niche right now. But his skill set is one that can be replaced fairly easily. Almost every single year there are under sized super fast guys who come into the league.
Also consider that he may net you something useful in a trade too. Would Mingo or Brown? No because teams know you are probably going to release them.

I understand he plays a different position, he's faster than them and returns kicks. But on offense he's just a gadget player, who is used as such. Blue or ??? can be that gadget guy if needed.

And the reason I think the bigger guys are more valuable long term is because they probably will not be willing/able to keep both GP and Lamb beyond this season. Not unless something completely out of the ordinary or drastic happens. So a true X or Z receiver will be needed as the #3 WR. One that can make plays and fill in case of injury. They have a couple of good options for that role here on the team right now, but may not be able to keep them, if they keep Turp.

So what I am saying is that if Blue can do that job good enough for now, (or someone else like maybe WR A Smith whom they just drafted in the 4th rd, who could probably make it to the PS much easier than Brown would), it makes more sense to keep the X WR that is already in house, who you may very much need next season. And if Blue or whomever isn't good enough to do the job of Turpin long term you will know it, then you try to go find that guy instead.

Anthony Smith has the speed which is what you need to replace Turpin . He can be a return man WR and run the Jet Sweeps instead of Lamb getting dragged around . If you could get a 4 for the 27 draft for Turpin buy the plane ticket

I feel this is inaccurate. Maybe it wasn’t meant to he the main thrust of your position but its indicative of a broad assumption by many fans.

Raw athletic track measurements are absolutely not an indicator of success as a return specialist.

Returning kicks is like playing Tetris or entering the matrix. On kickoffs there are a bunch of big and fast players streaming down the field at angles designed to disguise the coverage and force the returner into bad decisions.

The returner has to see it all in a split second, make an immediate decision while also seeing what their second decision will be once the coverage commits.

The new kick return rules reward mental processing and spatial awareness more than ever. The returner has to be patient and smart. It’s about decision making in the face of opposing teams sdheme, space and lane discipline.

Finally, ball security.

What got Traeshawn Holden cut the day after the first preseason game? It wasn’t because he didn’t score a touchdown, it was because he botched a return. This was the darling of the 2025 training camp and one play made him unemployed.

Turpin has lost 2 fumbles in his career. That’s a microscopic number. There are comparisons to every Cowboy receiver as well as the GOAT return man that prove it.

Touchdowns happen 1% of the time in the return game.

What happens 100% of the time is decision making, field position management and ball security.

I jsut think folks believe being a returner is a low value anybody can do it type of job.
