And when Tyron gets hurt, which he will, then what?

You move Tyler to LT and LG sucks again. Or do you hope like hell Waletzko can play OT or OG?

When the Cowboys take risks at positions - WR (twice), DT - thinking they have enough or can patchwork it with bodies, it blows up in their face.

I’m not a freak out guy, so I’m not sure the OP’s point applies to me. However, I would have liked to address OL in the first few rounds for multiple reasons.
  1. I do not think we are doing Tyler any favors treating him like the teams ping pong ball when he is still early in his development.
  2. I do not think we are helping with overall line chemistry when positions are constantly being adjusted. It’s great to have position flex,..I’m a huge fan. But to use use position flex as a primary strategy v a backup plan doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
  3. I love, love, love Tyrone. But he will likely get hurt and in the unlikely event he doesn’t, he will ride off into the sunset soon.
  4. I love, love, love Martin. But he will not be far behind Tyrone on his sunset ride.
  5. I like Steele more than most because I am loyal to my Tech boys. I am confident he will be recovered but he is still coming off a significant injury. And he will also be a FA and I’m sure he will want to get paid starter (ish) money. And if I were his agent and the Cowboys make him a swing tackle, I’m advising him to test the market.
  6. I’m lukewarm on Biadasz though credit where credit is due, he is a Pro Bowler. But he is also a FA and will likely want Pro Bowl money. If I were his agent, I’m testing the market considering what his line mate received.
  7. I am lukewarm but hopeful on our backups but we are still betting on the come.
IMO, we have a pretty significant OL restructuring on the horizon and FA questions around 2 starters next year. We should feel comfortable with 2 starters next year (Tyler & Zach) but is anyone really comfortable with the others. If Jerry is already committed to paying Steele & Biadasz whatever they want, I guess we should feel comfortable with 4 positions. But I haven’t seen any indication that is the case right now. I think we all agree that a solid OL should always be a priority. I’m not sure why we wouldn’t start the rebuilding process now. It’s not like we don’t have opportunities for improvement today and in my eyes, it’s clear what’s on the horizon.

Smith/Smith/Tyler B/Martin/Steele
...
T’s: Smith, Smith, Steele, Wally
G’s: ZM, Smith, Chuma, Farniok, (day 3 pick)
G/C: Tyler B, Farniok

Is that not a deep OL? Again, you have to see it from the lense that Tyler Smith is starting which all signs are pointing to. With a draft pick that’s 11 OL.
I like the starters a lot.
But the backups are bad.
That's a very good starting oline with very poor depth.
The depth is particularly an issue with Tyron's longevity iffy and both Biadasz and Steele in contract years. No depth, and no players drafted in premium rounds to groom to take a starting spot next year.

Those are the starters I would have gone with, in the positions I would have gone with. Last year too.

our depth is not what it used to be, we are barely hoping that the starting 5 stay healthy and rely on unproven backups. We used to have 10-12 good OL, and trying to trade away good players. I am sure there are veterans they want to bring in as good backups after training camps, I don't think we will go into the season with this OL on the roster only

Don't be surprised if Josh Ball wins the starting LG spot. He may not be suited to play OT, but he has the power to be a Guard.
Ball's run blocking was pretty good, but that wasn't against DTs, it was against DEs. Need more power inside go against DTs.

He might have a better chance working on the jugs machine to be a short yardage blocking TE. Easier to teach Ball to catch a 3 yard pass than to teach Rico to block.

They probably bring in a big old veteran G for cheap. LG used to be our "make due" oline position. Now I think we're just worrying about backups.

If Peters will come back cheap, even with a raise, I'm all for it now, as we didn't draft oline we have to use roster spots on anyway. Plays multiple positions, and pretty well at that. They should talk to him now.

G is a good place to put a big and strong LT past his prime. Agility down, but still has power. Peters would be the perfect guy.

I'd say Tyler is our LG and backup LT. He played last year, and we know we want him back at LT when we move on from Tyron.

Can we stop freaking out about drafting a day 1 starter at LG? The team has shown under McCarthy they are a “best 5” OL team. This means our starters on paper will be:

Smith/Smith/Tyler B/Martin/Steele

Had the team wanted Tyler at LT and Tyron/Steele on the bench they would’ve prioritized a LG. If there’s anything this team drafts for it’s need.

You get Farniok and Chuma as your IOL depth and Waletzko as your 4th T. With multiple injuries Tyler Smith would slide out to T while Farniok/Chuma/day 3 draft pick would battle it out to be the first one in if there’s an issue on the IOL.

The key is Waletzko being the swing I think he can be and the team says he can be. If so we are fine at OL.

T’s: Smith, Smith, Steele, Wally
G’s: ZM, Smith, Chuma, Farniok, (day 3 pick)
G/C: Tyler B, Farniok

I mean, brain wash yourself if you want. Its a joke.

So if Tyler Smith is a pro-bowl caliber guard like he’s already shown the potential to do this plan sucks?

I could be with Tyron as swing, but at his salary and play when healthy it doesn’t make sense to sit one of your best 5. Especially when he’s a HOF LT.

Again, we don’t see Waletzko daily like the team does. They’ve had him for a year already and he’s taken some PS snaps. If they see him and feel he can do the job then I can’t blame them.

There’s every chance a IOL we draft high doesn’t work out also. Smith we know can be good there. I’d rather be in wait and see mode about Wally than wait and see more about a starter.
Yep really sucks!!

And Tyler has nothing to do with the part that sucks.

So what happen when Tyron Smith is injured in Week 2? And Steele is coming off knee surgery and might not be ready for Week 1.....then what

I disagree. He happens to be a fan who cares about the team. I feel like there should have been more to keep our quarterback protected .They did better in free agency, I get that. However , the oline has not been upgraded and that's not a good thing. If Tyler goes down, things can get real ugly in a hurry. And if your oline doesn't get the job done, well you've seen how that can turn into an ugly mess. Come on man, get real.

I hear you but bro you can't have All Pro's at every position. I'm seeing alot of post about WHEN Tyron goes down, before he's taken one snap ! That and we "ve drafted OLineman, we've got an olinman in free agency.

Yet people still itch and moan about it hasn't been addressed and that just is false. Nice posting with you though

Personally, Tyler is such a stud (imagine that line exactly a year ago today) that I don’t think moving him back and forth from LG to LT much matters.

So you roll with the Hall of Famer Tyron outside until he can’t go any more, you hope it isn’t season ending, and if worst case then move Tyler outside. No need to do that from the beginning assuming it’ll happen.

Meanwhile if Tyron happens to be able to muscle through we have an awesome left side. Right side ain’t shabby either. Bring it Eagles.

All teams have to roll the dice in places. No one builds a perfect team.
