It’s perfectLy legal to hold the jersey inside, between the shoulders. He can grab, push, lift, but if a player tries to move left or right, he must release his grip and simply push with open hands. He also needs to learn to release when he feels he has overpowered a guy and is about to pancake the defender. If he still has the defender In grasp as the player tries to slide away or as the pancake happens, he will get a holding call.

Here's the blown up video like I did for the other block. You can't hold on to the left shoulder like Smith did as 97 attempted to chart a path to pursue. I did a slow mo on that part. You can't "materially restrict or alter the defender’s path or angle of pursuit" and of the examples given on restriction in the rules, it could have been considered any one of a jerk, twist, or a turning of the defender. You could also say he pulled 97 to the ground. It was one of those 4 and maybe a few at the same time. If he pulls that shoulder a little bit and then puts that hand in the air like "I didn't do anything" he has a chance at getting away with it. But a lineman going down draws attention. He'll learn.

Tyler Smith pancaking big guys in training camp is a preview of things to come. This is a rookie just getting his feet wet at the first two padded practices. Technique is not yet something Tyler Smith relies on so he has his brut strength and it is impressive. I'm excited to see what kind of O-lineman he can develop into.

I think moving Smith to Guard was an excellent move by the coaching staff. I don't think well see the holds he was getting called at Tackle. Kid is very physicals and regardless of how some seem to feel I think physicality was sorely needed. Franky I did not see holding on this play or the play on Hill nor did the refs who were brought in.

You start pancaking guys and you get away with the hold.
You tackle guys because they keep body-slamming you, see CWill, then you get the hold.

Guessing a lot of you guys never watched Larry Allen play. He put in hands in those exact locations many times and walked into the Hall of Fame.
Now can Tyler move his feet like LA , of course not. But good OL play is about moving people and Tyler moves people.
