True but only 7 penalties as a rookie for Tyron compared to 13 for Tyler. Why? I believe because of their slight difference in athleticism. See the RAS scores of both below...

As you can see, Tyron is bigger/taller, yet faster, quicker and more athletic, hence why the lesser amount of penalties. Tyler is a very good player, but since he is slightly slower, less quick and slightly less athletic than Tyron, it would most likely be best for Tyler to play inside at Guard.

Being moved to Left Guard to start the season and watching how he performs there will be very telling.
I think Tyron was more polished than Tyler coming out of college, since Tyler also struggled with penalties in college. Hopefully, whether Tyler is at left guard or left tackle, that will begin to iron out for him. I wouldn't mind Tyler ending up at guard long term if someone like Waletzko shows he can be a quality left tackle, but I don't really care who ends up where as long as it gives us the best chance of winning.

Copied from AC "He played 1,144 snaps (6th overall in the NFL), but he gave up 6 sacks (tied for 15th overall) and 13 penalties (tied 1st)."

He's not a bad LT but we are used to a healthy HOF player there. Hopefully he takes a step forward this year, cleans up the penalties at least. I'd like to start him inside where he can dominate vs LT where he will still be good just not dominate yet.

Tyron came from USC and was DEFINITELY more polished as he came into the NFL

I don't know about all of that praise...

Tyler Smith played well, but he also struggled at times at Left Tackle. He played 1,144 snaps (6th overall in the NFL), but he gave up 6 sacks (tied for 15th overall) and 13 penalties (tied 1st).

I believe Tyler Smith would perform even better at Guard. Looking forward to see Tyler Smith start at Left Guard since Tyron Smith will be back starting at Left Tackle.

I hope he's able to stick at guard this season for a number of reasons. He looks like a potential future all-pro at tackle. Still has to work on his balance, leverage, and technique, but the natural qualities you look for are all there. If he comes anywhere close to those levels, we got really lucky.

The thing is, I see a young Larry Allen in the way he moves and anchors. He can be a brick wall, and a wrecking ball. He's quick, powerful, intelligent, and mean as hell. His skill set is perfect at guard. I'm worried that the team won't address LT until Tyron retires, Tyler will be locked in, and he misses the opportunity to become one of the absolute best.

"Off the charts good", "Best shape of his life", "about to take the next step and become elite"... when are these accolades going to pay off? Where is the Super Bowl at the end of this rainbow?

Frankly, these over the top praises should cease until these players actually do something in the playoffs.
Honestly, you can go to any of the other 31 team fan boards and I guarantee that you will find all of the same accolades being thrown around about their teams player's. It's the off-season and everyone is either excited or looking for reasons to get excited about their team.

When Tyron Smith came out of college the Cowboys were not willing to use him to protect Romo's weak side. They actually had him playing right tackle his rookie season while Doug Free, a former 4th round pick, played left tackle. Tyron was the 9th overall pick in the draft that year.

The following season, Tyron and Doug Free switched sides. Tyron made his first Pro Bowl the season after, his 3rd season. He made first team All Pro for the first time in his 4th season.

As talented and gifted as Tyron was, he didn't just walk in his rookie season and set the world on fire.

Tyler Smith will eventually replace Tyron at left tackle. Personally, I suspect sooner than later. If Tyron was to start 15 or more games it would break a seven year streak. In the past three combined seasons his total starts is equal to one season.

Perhaps the Cowboys have medical information that gives them good reason to be confident that Tyron will be able to make it thru a full season as well as a potential playoff run.

In any case, young Tyler may have struggled some in his rookie season but I don't think any more than Tyron in his rookie year Tyler has the additional handicap of having to play a different position altogether while being ready to switch to left tackle at any point in a game.

If they can stabilize Tyler's position this season to where he can play the vast majority of games at one position then I believe he will have the potential to reach the Pro Bowl. Tyler may end up being one fop those rare O-linemen, like Larry Allen, who can make the Pro Bowl at either position.

No they won’t. As much as I love Tyron, he’ll never play the full season. So it’s just a matter of time before they move the kid out to tackle.
I think Waletzko is going to end up as the left tackle when Tyron goes down. Although Tyler showed he can kick out to LT, Waletzko is going to be playing there throughout camp and be the swing tackle. I know I'm going off very little evidence, but I really liked Waletzko's movement skills and believe he shows enough power in the brief bit we saw of him in camp. Defenses might figure out how to attack him, though, when they see more of him.

If Waletzko develops, however, it would give us the chance to let Tyler stay at guard after settling into it. If he doesn't, the better option will probably be moving Tyler to LT and playing Edoga at LG this year (unless someone else steps up).

I'm the perfect world you'd want him to be a great LT not LG. The guy I hear is the next stud Guard in the NFCE is Landon Dickerson.

Tyler has a leg up n many because frankly, his attitude and work ethic, character is elite. It’s uncommon in todays world. He is a throw back to a time when that was fairly expected and common. My military kid and Tyler are very similar in that they want to to be great in life. Thats the vibe I get from Tyler.
Tyron Smith is the same way lol.

Maybe Tyler ends up as good. Hopefully. But not probable.

Tyler Smith is the best lineman we have besides Martin. He needs to stay at 1 position.
And you remember how many fans hated the pick? There were only few of us that really liked the pick.

I think Tyron Smith and Tyler Smith are a good left side, but Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins are still the best LT-LG combo.

Eagles, Packers, Cowboys and Falcons have the best OLs in the NFC. You may say Falcons? Yes, they have a high quality OL.
