Tyler Smith is the best lineman we have besides Martin. He needs to stay at 1 position.

Penalties are all about discipline (unless the refs have it in for you WHICH HAS HAPPENED)
absolutely. I attended the Turkey Day game in 2021 against the Raiders. The refs were out to flag us all day. They were reaching for flags whenever we had the ball. TV didn't do it justice. I was there and witnessed the charade. We lost because of terrible calls.

CowboysZone DIEHARD Fan
Everyone thought that he was talented but raw. That he needed a ton of work and refinement before he was ready. His hard work proved them wrong. Nobody could have predicted just how good he would be as a rookie, especially by being forced to play multiple positions due to injuries.

He exceeded all expectations.
I agree. Considering he moved from LG to LT in season as a rookie and more than held his own is pretty impressive.

Is he the second coming of Anthony Munoz? No, but he is pretty darn good and will like be better this year.

I don’t know why you guys think this I don’t know if it’s the Byron Jones flipping positions fiasco is scaring you guys or what but Tyler Smith is capable of playing two positions….it’s not gonna hurt his growth.

True but only 7 penalties as a rookie for Tyron compared to 13 for Tyler. Why? I believe because of their slight difference in athleticism. See the RAS scores of both below...

Picsart-23-07-05-23-46-40-981.jpg

As you can see, Tyron is bigger/taller, yet faster, quicker and more athletic, hence why the lesser amount of penalties. Tyler is a very good player, but since he is slightly slower, less quick and slightly less athletic than Tyron, it would most likely be best for Tyler to play inside at Guard.

Being moved to Left Guard to start the season and watching how he performs there will be very telling.

Penalties have less to do about athleticism and more about proper footwork, hand placement and mental/focus on how the defender will attack. Athletic ability means squat if you don't have leverage/proper footwork on passing plays. While Tyler isn't the athletic stud Tyron was, it's not like he's a lumbering oaf out there. Hands come more into it on running plays. You rarely see holding calls when the hands are inside the defender near the chest. It's when they go too far wide around the shoulder pads.

Tyler's scouting reports all show that the sky is the limit for him, but the above needed refining. He was one of the youngest prospects in the draft, but was seen as quite raw.
He got by with his amazing strength and could re-anchor when other offensive linemen would get pushed back/knocked over/drag the DL for a holding call.

You then add in that the Cowboys last year had him at guard to start training camp.
2-3 weeks prior to game 1, he is thrown to Left Tackle.
He had good games and some really bad games. Completely "normal" for a rookie left tackle. He wasn't seen as a Jake Long day 1 starter.

Did you ever play on the Oline?

Actually, I recall the refs flagged the defense and AB relentlessly all day when 99% of the time in that Raider game, he did nothing wrong. Conversely, they let the Raiders grab and interfere all day.

Man... Was he a pleasant surprise or what?? I figured he'd struggle, especially at LT his rookie year but he proved to be a monster. Awesome pick.
hes a Larry Allen-ish freak. Maybe more like Eric Williams. I see an awful lot of Ronald Leary in him when he's at guard.

Tyler has a leg up n many because frankly, his attitude and work ethic, character is elite. Its uncommon in todays world. He is a throw back to a time when that was fairly expected and common. My military kid and Tyler are very similar in that they want to to be great in life. Thats the vibe I get from Tyler.

Yes.

From an early age coaches taught
1. Leverage.
2. Hand placement.
3. Footwork.

Tyler Smith could hide some of his warts due to how strong he was. Baldy would rave about how he could stonewall a defender off raw strength.
It seemed like the biggest question marks on Tyler pre-draft was the above needed some work. And not to be mean, but it's not like Tulsa is a top D-1 school with the ability to get great positional coaches.

He seems like a guy who is willing to bust his *** to get better so I think he will be great at any position. But I think he has the physical ability and drive to be a very good LT. Just needed more refinement. Something that needed more than one rookie offseason to improve. I think he'll be a guard this year-subject to Tyron's health then in 24 take over the LT spot full time.

"Off the charts good", "Best shape of his life", "about to take the next step and become elite"... when are these accolades going to pay off? Where is the Super Bowl at the end of this rainbow?

Frankly, these over the top praises should cease until these players actually do something in the playoffs.
Absolutely
