You're telling me in the past two years you've never seen a Cowboy get called for a holding like that? I've seen in too many times.

There are exceptions to holding (if you think this was one) and this play is kinda borderline to an exception since yes, it did occur way away from the point of attack but it does kinda occur in close-line play. This little primer below does a decent job with video to show that what people think is holding isn't actually holding for all those exceptions that exist that I'll reference from time to time.

I have no idea how anyone see enough to make a call either way. I spotted the frame and enlarged it and went frame by frame scrubbing and the shot is not focused enough to make any conclusion.
To be fair, I'm just making a guess of what a ref might assume while watching everything else and it's in their FOV.
They tend to make dramatic things like a penalty because it seems like it was one, in their mind.

It happens.

Didn't look like a hold at all to me actually. Hill loses leverage almost immediately which puts him off balance. Smith doesn't have to wait until he regains balance nor did Smith pull him to the ground. It was a natural progression of blocking someone who'd lost balance.

Arms were outside Hill's frame and not working back in as he slammed him down. Probably not getting away with that.

Nah, not really. It was a run play to our right, so had Hill pursued the ball that direction and Smith got a hand outside to jerk him back and slam him down that's one thing. But Hill was off balance almost immediately and couldn't run one way or another because he had a face full of Smith on him pushing him backwards. There was no jerk, twist, grab, etc. to prevent Hill from pursuit because Hill never mustered pursuit as he was trying to regain balance. Even if that was a run up the middle that wouldn't have been holding.

Here's a tackle holding example by 76 on the left to stop a pursuit of the ball. This was not that.

It was a counter to the left not a run to the right. Don't let Dak's action fool you. Still think Smith having his hand in Hill's armpit is borderline if not a straight up hold.

When Tyler does that to Ridgeway, I'll be impressed. But Trysten??? My grandmother could do that to Trysten in a heartbeat.

Haha, did they just try to block JJ Watt with a tight end?

Short video showing our 2022 #1 pick blowing up our 2019 #2 pick. Hill has to be on bust watch- and not just because of this one video.

Several reports from Cowboys beat writers Clarence Hill and David Moore have said Hill has been less than stellar so far this summer. It’s early- first day in pads. But the clock has to be ticking for Trysten Hill.

Great news for Smith....i know its only THill, but if Smith is worth his salt he should be able to dominate Hill. So good sign. Hill should be cut on the first day of cuts. SMDH

When I said "to our right" I meant basically stage right which is the same as to Dak's left. Credit to @Xizor for the link but here is the partial video. This is after Hill has lost his own footing from the impact. If there's a danger of a hold here, it's actually on Zack Martin grabbing Lawrence's right shoulder to restrict his "path or angle of pursuit" as he changes direction toward the ball carrier on the opposite side. Don't think he held it long enough though. Hill has no pursuit or angle because he's already lost footing to move in one direction or another. As for the hands, this video doesn't show a tight hold under Hill's pit. Most of his action was with his left hand/arm. Hill twisting at the end might actually be a Tyron Smith assist grabbing along Hill's back while pretending not to be concerned with that block. Oh those sneaky Smiths.

Might could get called there for illegal hands to the face since his left hand is up in the face mask area when he shoves him to the ground. Don't think a penalty would have been called because he doesn't bend the head back or push directly on the face mask. With the league's emphasis on safety, though, any forceful contract to the head or neck area is risky.

I like it, but as they say, a penalty could be called on offensive linemen on virtually every play. Some officials are ticky-tack while others let them play.

Dude, Smith is the real deal. You got to be on a different level to handle Trysten Hill.
