Tyron Smith against Virginia (Video)

cowboyjoe;3887239 said:
Part of that is very true, the potential. But if you know what your watching and seeing its there. The hands, has huge hands, the nastiness when he wants too, and ability to slide while reaching 2nd level. Kinda like what doug free does too reaching 2nd level, thats what Jason Garrett wants, athletic linemen, moreso than big maulers.

Then, remember now, this kid is only 20. Just think in 2 years, the growth and strength, will only get bigger and stronger when reaches about 24 or so, he already is at 307, and tall too.

Only issue i have, basically only played 2 years, and then this year had knee injury, which is kept him from running at combine, but if he blows it up at his proday on April 1st, at 307, say run a 4.9 or so. He will move up draft boards, if knee is solid and ok too.

I am alittle wary of USC OT's with jacob rogers, and way eagles winston justice has played. Giants DE ate him up his rookie year in one game. And Justice was light weight too.

Best to my memory, one more OT has played well for Falcons who drafted him, but since that time, Munoz was only best OT to come out of USC to my memory, and that was years ago.

Yet, on potential, this kid reminds me of a very young Rayfield Wright who we drafted as a TE, who Coach Landry put at OT. Wright grew into the OT position and was dominant. This kid looking at him on film reminds me of Rayfield alittle.

Again, just my view points.

I am probably going to be killed for saying this but the same can be said about BC OT's in the last few years. I mean Marten and Chelious(spelling-OT from the Lions) have not been that good either. There are no sure-fire players in this draft (sorry Hos but I think even Peterson has some major flaws in his game). Free has turn into a solid OT for us but many rated him as a fringe player when he came out. I would love to trade down and get Smith, but I would not mind Sherrod or Carmi. The one that I am not really sold on is Solder. Just my 2 cents.

I take it this is his worst game but he still had some great plays. Half the time he flat out eliminated his man from the play. Other times he tried to do that and he would come in at a bad angle and would have to recover and would get tripped up. He was athletic enough to get back some times but theres some coaching points there. Needs to be a little more patient. And early in the video hes using a designed cut back. That ball was supposed to be out.

I would say that he could use some more strength. Even though his current weight is acceptable, his strength isnt all there yet.

As for him not finishing blocks, were we watching the same video? He was constantly on the 2nd level in the running game. At times he was running out of the frame.

How is this guy a top 10 pick? He gets his QB killed, holding penalties, stuffed back in the hole, and doesn't get much push in the run game. Also consider that this is against the UVA Cavaliers and some no-name DE.

Might have been one of his worst, the other video on Youtube (against Cal), isn't a glowing endorsement either.

All I see is an undersized positional blocker that lacks a mean streak, I hear "potential" with him all the time but truth is there are tons of guys in every draft that have potential. You don't spend top 10 picks on potential, at least smart teams don't.

Just so I know what to look for, what's the indicator of a "mean streak" when watching a YouTube video.

Gaede;3887246 said:
Agreed. I understand wanting athletes at CB, WR but the OL is a different game. I'm looking for is a guy that is 1) mean 2) smart 3) a football player.
The NFL has a growing fascination with athletic freaks of nature, but time and time again, the guys who succeed are the maulers, the smart guys, and the overachievers. That's what this game is all about.

All this talk about a guy who wasn't the best in college, projecting him to a position we already have filled--it's as though we're outsmarting ourselves. We don't need a blockbuster right tackle. We need a football player. I know we like our shiny toys on the Cowboys, but why can't it just be so simple as getting the big, ugly, mean guys? That's exactly what this team lacks!

Colombo meets two of those and well...........he sucks.

Thank God there are people who see the light.

We have a LT. We need a RT.

Why aren't we talking about our high 2nd rounder and if we could trade it up a bit to get the RT prospect that will be sitting around there?

Carimi or Sherrod will be there at the bottom of the first, early second.

They play better than Smith anyways and have actually played LT.

Carimi can play all over the line.

Sherrod can play LT or RT and wouldn't have a problem playing guard either.

Both can start at RT immediately.

Then we can decide if we want to grab a guard in other rounds or a RT or guard in FA because either of those players give us the flexibility to do so without using our 9th overall pick or having to trade out of it.

Why do they buy into the hype on this guy. Where is the hype coming from anyways?

An absolute gem of a post.

Gotta love it when personal opinion is passed off as fact and when reality is trashed for what you're just sure will happen.

Funny, we need a RT, but we don't want the guy that actually played RT in college.

Weird, apparently you know with all surety that Carimi and Sherrod can play guard despite the fact that neither played that in college. And don't think Carimi lining up at gaurd for drills at Senior Bowl is the same thing as actually playing OG.

It's incredible, the fact you were able to talk to all 32 NFL teams and find out what their draft plans are. Specifically, the fact that you know Carimi and Sherrod will be "at the bottom of the first, early second."

Your insider knowledge is a real treasure to the board.

realtick;3887515 said:
1) Smith, along with some of the others you named could be that RT.

2) Why would you when you could trade out of #9 down into the teens and pick up a few draft picks?

3) Ssshhhh, I'm sure glad we have an NFL insider here at the Zone. The fact that you've talked to all 32 teams and got the scoop on who they'll be taking is an absolute treasure.

4) Personal opinion.... and Carimi never played OG at Wisconsin, he played it in drills at the Senior Bowl. Please tell me you don't think that's adequate proof he can play the position?

Completely unsubstantiated...lol

Glad to see Nostradamus frequents this message board...

5) The post above is what happens when you mistake your personal opinion and pass it off as fact and replace reality with what you think will surely happen.

Unbelievable.

1) He could be, not right away though and certainly not for the 9th overall pick. Rather trade the 2nd up than the 1st down to get our RT.

2) Because we don't get a top 10 shot often and there is a very good chance we can draft a stud this year in those picks. Not a potential player, a legitimate thoroughbred. This team is built to win now if we can get a couple starters out of this draft and 1 or 2 more out of FA. We don't need a boat load of picks, we need quality, not quantity. We can get that RT need taken care of in the bottom of the 1st, early 2nd.

You ever hear of a guy called Stephen Jones? Yah, well Calvin Watkins who is an avid reporter on this team has reported in talking to Stephen Jones that he believe we need to go BPA with the 9th overall pick and not trade down.

I guess you hold more weight than what Stephen Jones does. Don't even bother in using the draft smoke screen garbage to substantiate your approach over Stephen Jones'. Especially when you are making assumptive remarks the way you are about my posts.

Don't worry, everything will be substantiated in what I say, unlike your opinion based rational. Look further down as I proceed to enlighten you un-enlightened and aggressive one.

3) Nope I have not talked to even 1 of the 32 teams, nor have I ever said I did. Me talking to all 32 teams is not a fact whether you were being sarcastic or not. Obviously sarcastic on your end. But that's all you got because apparently only your opinions around here don't require you to talk to all 32 clubs about the draft. You're hilarious.

Here is another bunch of well known draft sites and their mocks. What do you know? Sherrod and Carimi are sitting there at the bottom of the 1st or early 2nd.

Eat your heart out. There's more than where this all came from.

A lot of Nostradamus' out there huh? Go research before you start posting and questioning everyone else.

Go research before all you have to offer is aggressive remarks and statements about peoples posts.

Instead of making remarks like "we got a Nostradamus posting" and "glad you talked to all 32 teams".

I obviously have more research regarding this than you and it's pretty basic research I may add. So if I'm the Nostradamus of this mock draft than you must be the Ray Charles of it. Because my man, there is information everywhere indicating what I said and you are obviously to lazy to look for it or too blind to see it. But you got the energy to say "un-substantiated" things.

So consider the information I was nice enough to provide you with substantiated.

4) Not personal opinion, there are many reports saying he is the most flexible offensive-lineman in the draft. He has played LT and he is sought more so as a RT prospect. Analysts like Mayock have said he could play inside if teams needed him to. Gabe Carimi himself has said he was willing to if teams needed to as well.

Sherrod is being seen as a RT prospect as well in many reports.

Substantiated, facts. Not opinion. You're the only 1 who apparently is allowed to have an opinion anyways. Even if my post was opinionated, which it is backed buy fact and substance.

but this isn't the first time you go on making remarks out of your own opinion instead of coming up with proof and facts. So that's why I'm gonna give it to you like this. Last time too.

5) So based on the numerous other reports provided to you in this post what I have said is not just my own reality, but other well known mock sites reality. Let's not question yours. So now that you can feel free to make totally opinionated and un-substantiated comments what do you have to say that is useful?

I think you should say "thank you". Learn a life skill bud called "research".

It's ok to question where my insight comes from and why I think the things I do about this draft. No problem! that's what a blog is for.

But don't go on the way you did.

Somehow you changed your post after you saw how I responded. Does not even show an edit but I quoted it.

Bro, you talk with nothing to back it up and then when you get straightened out you edit your posts.

Got you quoted in the response anyways.

You know why you changed your post after I responded to it?

Cause you got handled.

You hate on more insightful people and then change your post like the coward hater you are.

You're soft hater.

Lol, I edited my post because it came off a bit too harsh, well before you even posted that long-winded response.

Your entire post was one unsubstantiated claim after the other. Now you're grasping for straws because you know you can't back up a thing you asserted.

When do you respond to anything I wrote? Please lay it out for me or ask one of the mods to put my original post back up.

Well that’s conclusive proof then! A guy has a bad game and that tells the whole story about the player.

Is it my imagination or did a certain Erik Williams own a certain Reggie White in a couple of playoff games in the 90’s?

Boy that Reggie White wasn’t worth jack!!!!

Buddy, post #29 in this thread. It's all there for you. Eat your heart out. You obviously read it.

Got handled and changed your post around to the best of your ability.

Your usual post saying the same things like the broken record you are. You just stopped calling me nostradamus in it.

You blind bat. Go read up on stuff before you yap. You still haven't learned.

You heard a new word "substantiate" and you like to use it now. Obviously you don't even know what it means because post # 29 substantiated all my statements in this thread prior to that post.

You contradict yourself too much.

Everything is backed up. Cut and paste the links and read.

You know how to do that right?

what game was it this year that Peterson did not look anything more than ordinary?

This whole thread is pathetic. You have two or three posters patting each other on the back each repeating what the other two said and thinking it means anything.

It's about time somebody posted the "bad" parts of his game instead of mindlessly posting highlight videos--which is what ESPN will do on draft day.

Cmon man. Apples to oranges. Patrick Peterson is as pro ready a prospect in this draft.

Nobody would question taking him anywhere from pick # 1 to pick # 10

Tyron Smith? We're the only team in the top 10 supposedly interested in him.

Everyone talks about what he could be.

Patrick Peterson? Everyone talks about what he already is.

I agree.

The thing is. Out of any footage I have seen of him from anyone.

There is nothing impressive about him. Not even on his own highlight video.

What the heck, people.

How am I supposed to pursue my dream of being a scout if you guys can't tell me how to spot a "mean streak" in a YouTube video.

Come on guys, don't let me down here!!!!!!

Wish someone could show me in any of these videos how he holds up his own and gives the QB a solid pocket.

Wish someone could show me in any of these videos how he creates consistent running lanes for the ball carrier.

He's diving 30% of the time when he blocks. Best thing he does is a chip block.

DE's are bull rushing him and slapping him back into the QB like it's their little brother in the basement.

When they're not just shoving him back into the QB, they're running by him like he's a matador.

I'm tired of having to watch poor Tony Romo tap dance throughout games on every other down and using a 9th overall pick on this level of prospect is unacceptable.
