I think when it comes to lineman, Tyron is the exception and not the rule.

For every Tyron you've got a "Doug Free", "Nate Newton" and "Derek Kennard".

Free's primary problem has been a lack of upper body strength. The photos just correlate to his problems. He's in his 8 year in the NFL. That's a lot of time in an NFL weight room to not be any more developed. I don't know if he just doesn't work hard in the weight room or if he just can't gain muscle mass for some reason.

Newton and Kennard had bad bodies, but they had mass all over, not just in their gut. Free lacks muscle mass in his upper body.

What strikes me a little bit is his demeanor. They young guys even look more confident.

The picture of Tyron is from like 5 or 6 years ago. He doesn't look like that anymore and I wouldn't want an offensive lineman to look like that. But yes, Doug Free is very fat.

I don't care if he is fat, he has no upper body mass.

I'll agree. If he had more muscle mass he'd be a great player and that's definitely something he needs to work on. However, the juxtaposition of Tyron and Doug in those pictures isn't really an honest representation of them. I'm sure if you dug up a shirtless picture of Free in his college days (which I'm not calling for), he'd look better, but that doesn't really have anything to do with the current situation. He's a player who has always relied on his feet and technique and when either of those fail him, he doesn't have that anchor strength to fall back on. If he gained upper body strength, he'd be a much better player.

This guy had a lot of muscle mass. There's a reason why when Free was the worst tackle in the league, all Parnell could do was get spot duty. I know Parnell is your pet cat, but he just isn't very good.

Mandarich would have looked more like Free after he had to quit the Steroids.

I would be OK if Free had a 1993 Nate Newton upper body if he that kind of strength.

Parnell was as good or better than Free when they split reps and in the 2 games that Parnell played at LT. It's on film

There were multiple reports that Callahan campaigned to bench Free and start Parnell. The compromise was having them split series. The next opportunity that Parnell would have to beat out Free was the following training camp; however, Parnell was injured for the duration of that preseason and the issue lingered into the regular season.

You have no idea or basis for your conclusion. I doubt if you even studied the game footage when Parnell did play.

The basis for my conclusion is that he couldn't beat Free when he was at his worst. The fact that he has two starts in 3 years with Free being the worst in the league during one of those speak volumes about Parnell's ability.

I'm pretty sure those "reports" about Callahan are pure fabrication.
