Tyron Smith Makes Cowboys Sacrifice, Still Called 'Overvalued'?

My thoughts:
Tyron Smith apparently took his salary from $13 mil to $6 mil as a concession due to his injuries the last few seasons. Say what you will, but that man has given everything for the Cowboys. He's been one of the best tackles of all time, and he's done another thing to sacrifice for the team. I truly hope that, when he retires, he not only gets in the HOF as a first ballot but also gets into the ROH. He belongs there.

We recognize and acknowledge the uncertainty that surrounds Smith's availability. But CBS Sports is going beyond that, putting a harsh label on it, having named the 32-year-old the most "overvalued" player in Dallas entering 2023.
Hard to dispute that.
Smith agreed to transform a significant portion of what was to be his base salary (that he would get no matter what) into incentives (which he will only get if certain parameters are met).
Smith doing the Cowboys a pretty solid! Hard to believe any player in the league would agree to that.

I do hope he’s able to stay healthy this year. Both player and team deserve a ‘break’ from the injury bug that’s been nagging him for these past several years.

If Tyron can stay healthy and be himself at left tackle, it would mean so much for this offense.

I hope so too. When healthy, he's the best tackle in the league, imo

When you’ve made over $111 million it’s easier to do lol
it is, but he could have made a lot more when he signed his deal. he's been a team player through and through. from his big contract where he took less or could have pulled a dak for a second contract to what he's doing now. teams dream about guys like this minus the recent injuries.

Here's a fun little game to play.
I challenge anyone to total up all the money they have made in their respective careers and then agree they will take less than half of the amount they are owed this year, just because of what they were paid previously.

It's not happening with pretty much anyone else on the planet, except with an athlete of high moral character who just wants to keep playing.

Exactly, and a player that wants to keep playing on the same team. Tyron Smith is a player who belongs in the HOF and ROH

I totally agree with all of the positive comments about what Tyron has meant to this team and what a great player he has been. But, i don’t think Tyron taking less was just done just as a favor to the Cowboys. His $13.5M base salary wasn’t guaranteed and he wasn’t likely getting any of it if he refused a pay cut.

Hi character guy a deserves so much respect. Plays elite, battles his injuries, and does what he can for the Cowboys wallets. This also after having to deal with his wretched family early on trying to take advantage of his money- And they did if I remember correctly.
yeah they pulled a lot when he was a rookie until he cut ties with them. pretty sad.

I think he was one of the best LT who ever played the game. not saying he is #1 or anything to that, but he was great. most people forget he entered the league at 20 years of age, having been in the league 2,3 years earlier than most others who come to the league and his body as the LT has taken a toll over the years. he has become injury prone.its inevitable if you stay in the league for that long. specially on the OL going against 280+ players, every down. he will be in the ring and he will be in the HOF. if he doesn't go first ballot, it would be a shame.

He's betting on himself. shrugs....
"Shrugs"? You do know what typically happens when players are in their so called "contract year"? They exceed expectations. This is technically different but in both cases they bet on themselves. I'm hopeful he stays healthy all year but I understand hope is not a tactic...

Smith has never been one to maximize his earnings. His extension made him catch flack from the NFLPA. He could of very well held the Cowboys over a barrel during his peak. Never held out, nor tried to get a new bigger contract during his peak.

If he does well, he can earn that back and more(resulting in a 2024 cap hit even if he leaves). Hope he does well in 23. A healthy Tyron Smith means our line is at our best while Tyler continues to develop.
