Tyron Smith's Injury History Wildly MisUnderstood. Just stop

Bad-mouthing Tyron Smith is foolish. The team really suffered a year ago during the games he didn't play in the middle of the year. The Cowboys were (wise..fortunate (pick one)) that they drafted Tyler Smith, and that he's played so well as a rookie. But there is no way that Tyler Smith is currently playing at the HOF level that Tyron Smith has shown he's capable of playing when he's healthy.

Bottom line: When Tyron Smith is healthy, he gets his job back until he proves he can no longer do the job.

Certainly, we should all be very encouraged that Tyler Smith looks like he'll be a very good replacement for Tyron Smith in the future. But it is premature to assume that is now. Tyler is making up for his mistakes with brute strength, but his technique still needs a lot of improvement. If Tyron comes back and immediately gets reinjured, the Cowboys have lost nothing by putting him back in. Tyler is still available if needed. The question then becomes what to do with Tyler. It is not an automatic assumption that you replace McGovern at Left Guard, who has started playing well in the last few games. But Tyler Smith does have more power than McGovern. So, it makes sense to rotate them in at Left Guard - so that the coaches can get some real-time film on both players and evaluate the best options for the team going into the end of the season and the playoffs. Another option is to rotate Tyler Biadasz and Connor McGovern at Center. McGovern has played center and has practiced as a center for the Cowboys. It is possible that he might be an upgrade at Center.

The Cowboys are getting healthy at the right time. Having seven starting quality offensive linemen (Smith, Smith, Peters, Steele, McGovern, Biadasz and Martin), three of whom (so far) that are likely destined for the Football Hall of Fame, is a luxury for the Cowboys. We should be grateful, and not tear down any of the players.

Let's look around the NFL at top tackles, shall we?

-Rashawn Slater was pro-bowler his first season. He will miss 16 games this season
-All world Trent Williams has missed games in each of his past five seasons
-Eric Fisher former NFL No. 1 overall pick, 2021 pro bowler, missed half of 2019. Injuries have sidelined him all of this year
-Pro Bowl Laremy Tunsil missed 12 games last season, two this year already
-Pro Bowl Terron Armstead has missed 36 games to injury since 2014
-Pro Bowl David Bakhtiari has missed 23 games over the past 3 seasons

Need I go on? I've got dozens more. It's football. Tackles get hurt a lot. They miss games. Is what it is.

Adjust your childish notions, and quite snipping at Smith. Call him glass? You don't know what you're talking about.
He will not be on the roster in 2023. His 2023 salary is 13.6M. It would have been fun to see Tyron at LT and Tyler at LG but it seems unlikely at this point.

His back/neck issue might be a non-issue after finally having the surgery that he needed for several years but the probability of him staying healthy at this point is low.

He has over trained in the weight room. He played at under 300 in college and has since bulked up into a combination of the Hulk and the Terminator. Arnold in his prime would look puny next to Tyron.

Tyron could probably compete as a body builder when he retires. He is a true freak of nature.

Relax buddy. No one says Smith is made of glass. He has gotten injury prone later in his career. That’s a fact. People need to remember that even though he is not old Smith was a starting LT in the NFL at 21. He has a lot of miles on those tires. Again that’s a fact. He should not be relied on to be a key piece ever again. There is nothing wrong with that because it’s true.

not isolated to OL, this is the NFL. injuries happen a lot...however in TS77 case, its his age, contract, and other thongs that say his end is coming soon., the play of steele and TS73 also affords the DC to offer 77 an option to be Swing tackle to finish his career or retire.

no one plays forever.

I would put him at RT myself; he would be a massive upgrade there..

Keep Steele as his backup; and if Smith goes out Tyron moves there.

Now his cap hit is rather big but he is worth it; especially with the cap steadily increasing and hopefully taking a big jump in another year.

Reality is of course that he has a lot of mileage on a calendar young body

I think we still need to draft another Tackle high because steele is simply not good enough for a long term contract as a starter

Tyron's back issues are troubling.

All the rest are just football injuries that can happen to anybody.

I remember his rookie season, and thinking that he looked more like a tall TE rather than a LT.
The coaches put him on a program to bulk up and Tyron never looked back.
His transformation should be one of the seven wonders of the world.

You're crazy. Terrance Steele is fast becoming an above average Right Tackle in the NFL.

One of the photos showing his 6 pack abs was after he got up to about 320...

Possibly or also possible was he grew as he matured. Happens to all of us. He was still 20 when drafted.

You can't just assign a number though. He has missed 3-4 in past years but his age & injuries are increasing which leads us to this year where he has missed the season to date. At some maybe it's time to call it a career.
Some of these games he missed if it was a playoff hand he would’ve played.

YEah I don't understand why everyone is so quick to dismiss him. His contract is nice. I need him for playoff runs I could care less how many regular season games he misses. This team NEEDS him come playoffs to win in the trenches.
If you look at the position you see players at that position get injured fairly often. There is a lot of big bodies around your legs, you are playing against a big, strong, fast defender
When healthy he’s still one of the top 10 tackles and as you pointed out his contract is reasonable and always has been under paid
I like the idea of developing the next guy but he could be very valuable come playoff time or even getting there. We could have a tackle go down any time and it will be nice to have that insurance policy
The future is the future and that we can look at after the season but I’m glad and hopefully he can come back soon and be there to help this team

if you don’t realize T Smith is now absolutely one of the biggest injury risks in the league you have an agenda, have your head in the sand or aren’t very bright. He is never healthy, even when he guts it out and plays the last several years. Listing other guys who are also injury prone doesn’t change that. Sorry. No offense meant.

IMO he is automatically our starting left tackle the second he is able to play, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t injury prone. As a matter of fact that’s what makes his inability to stay healthy so difficult.

Tyron missed one game in his first five seasons. He's missed 39, and counting, the next seven seasons. Father Time is catching up to him, just like everyone else.

Thanks for the voice of reason Jake. Father time does indeed catch up to everyone at some point, and Tyron Smith is not immune to it.
That 1st 5 seasons only missing 1 game makes the point perfectly clear.

I'd really love to have seen Tyron and Tyler at LT and LG working together on a regular basis when Tyron was healthier, but like you said it doesn't seem likely now. Tyron is just too beat up.

Yup. But...
Shhh...brattish 4 year-olds are asleep. Wouldn't want to wake them.

I suppose when warriors get hurt battling for our teams...we should denounce them. Spit on them. Our 4-year old demands weren't satisfied.
Yeah, there’s that, along with a clear misunderstanding of the value teams place on the position. Armstead received a 5yr, 87m, 54m guaranteed contract in FA this past spring.

I’m still holding out hope we will see the two T Smiths play together before year end.
