He is one of my all-time fav playes in big D, and the reality is he cannot be expected to nor will be a regular on this team. My issue isn't about health, his position will do that to the best. My issue is that up until last year this team did zip to replace him..now we are on the right track

I love Tyron and he's done a great job for us, but he is well into the back 9 of his career and it's time to cut ties with him after the season given his injury history and the fact that Tyler has come along so quickly.

What are you asking me?

How's the contract nice?

When healthy he’s still one of the top 10 tackles and as you pointed out his contract is reasonable and always has been under paid

$17.6m CAP hit may be reasonable for a team with a healthy CAP space, but when (over the past 3 season's) he's only averaging a maximum of 6 games and we do have a decent enough replacement.

It's a hard decision, but that's what happens when you overpay 'your guy's' for too long.

I don’t think there’s a single person here who doesn’t appreciate what a dominant LT brings to the team.

It’s just the business. I think the salary cap has been around long enough that we all know it’s reality on these types of decisions. A lot of greats played their last years on another team. I know I would be excited if I was another team’s fan, had a bad offensive line, and heard Tyron was coming to play.

Everyone benefits from cohesion and playing together, but I think the offensive line may benefit the most. For those reasons, as much as I love the guy, with no guarantee of health, it’s probably best to move on. The one rebuttal I would put to the original post is many teams have vets who start breaking down, not many teams have a rookie LT ready to go.

When you have back, disc issues...not much can be done about that...when he starts fighting the man in front of him, that when it shows....his lateral movement is not the same at it once was....

Good thread. It just shows how important depth is on the offensive line.

Let's look around the NFL at top tackles, shall we?

-Rashawn Slater was pro-bowler his first season. He will miss 16 games this season
-All world Trent Williams has missed games in each of his past five seasons
-Eric Fisher former NFL No. 1 overall pick, 2021 pro bowler, missed half of 2019. Injuries have sidelined him all of this year
-Pro Bowl Laremy Tunsil missed 12 games last season, two this year already
-Pro Bowl Terron Armstead has missed 36 games to injury since 2014
-Pro Bowl David Bakhtiari has missed 23 games over the past 3 seasons

Need I go on? I've got dozens more. It's football. Tackles get hurt a lot. They miss games. Is what it is.

Adjust your childish notions, and quite snipping at Smith. Call him glass? You don't know what you're talking about.

That lame attempt at analysis falls flat when you actually look at the numbers. Eric Fisher is not even in the league, smh. Even if you were to look at him his games played % is good. What's the point in looking at Rashawn Slater? He's in his second season. As for the other guys listed, I went back to 2016 to make it apples-to-apples in terms of total number of possible games to play in. Expectedly, Tyron is at the bottom of availability; he's effectively missed 2.5 seasons of football since 2016.

The premise of T-RO's "analysis" is flawed anyways. If you found another OT that has missed as much time as Tyron has all you have accomplished is identifying another injury prone lineman.

I'm not surprised, young Cal PolyWog, that you again struggle with simple logic.

The list I gave inexorably demonstrated the extremely high attrition rate of top NFL tackles. Top NFL tackles go down at alarming rates. Eric Fisher isn't even in the league this year because he got hurt playing tackle! Rashawn Slater is exhibit 459, demonstrating how even the young are not immune.

Shall we look at still more tackles and the plague of injuries?

-Browns Jack Conklin has missed of 12 of 25 games the past two years
Ravens All-Pro left tackle Ronnie Stanley has only played 12 games the past 3 years.
-Mekhi Becton, 11th overall pick in 2020, is out for the season with an August knee injury
-Denver Broncos starting left tackle Garett Bolles broke his leg late in the Week 5
-Eagles 1st round tackle Andre Dillard broke his forearm just before the start of the season
-Seahawks George Fant on injured reserve
-Tennessee Titans Pro Bowler Taylor Lewan is out for the season with a knee injury he suffered in Week 2
-Angeles Rams left tackle Joseph Noteboom tore his Achilles
-Saints first-round pick Trevor Penning, preseason foot injury, hasn't yet played a game
-Tampa Bay Buccaneers left tackle Donovan Smith missed most of the first three weeks of the season with an elbow injury

Jordan Mailata, Colton McKivitz, Patrick Mekari, Trey Pipkins, Donovan Smith
and others have missed games already this season.

Add these to the half-dozen I mentioned in my OP.

NFL tackles going down with injury is the absolute norm, not the exception.

According to Sportsrac he's the 25th highest paid tackle. That's nice to me.

Lls y’all will say anything to justify your favorite player missing 30% of snaps for like 7 years. Just stop

In light of the dump truck of data just unloaded...this post hasn't aged well.

I hated to see Emmitt leave Dallas but I knew he was done, he put in the time and time caught up to him.
Emmitt wasn't playing at a 90+ PFF level the last half of his career. Tyron Smith was in his games last season.

Let me help you homeschool.

“h3y guYz, phutbAll plAyerz get iNjuured!!!”

Stating that offensive linemen (or football players in general) get injured is not profound.

The issue is how often does a player get injured and miss time is the question, i.e, being injury prone.

THAT is the issue.

Based on the names you provided, dating back to 2016 to make it apples-to-apples, Tyron has played in the least amount of games of those players.

Got some more names of guys that have played since 2016? Give them to me. I’ll do the math for you since you struggle with that.

Your attempt at analysis premise is undermined by a bunk premise, lulz.

You're crazy. Terrance Steele is fast becoming an above average Right Tackle in the NFL.
BS.And even if true which its not he is not good enough

you have the same mentality as people who are quite satisfied to make the playoffs and then go one and done

Over 25 OTS have missed games...many have missed lots of games just within a year.

Does it occur to you that OTs are as an entire group, INJURY PRONE?

Sorry, terra. Jumbo is 100% correct. Steele is at least an average OT at this point.

Wait????

You’re telling me there’s been some injuries this season

Now, demonstrate those same players have missed the same amount of games percentage wise over the same duration of time as Tyron.

“Hey guys, Sean Lee wasn’t injury prone because Joe Blow for the Lions missed a game earlier this year. See?!?! Samesieeeeeezzzz!!!”

Tyron missed one game in his first five seasons. He's missed 39, and counting, the next seven seasons. Father Time is catching up to him, just like everyone else.

It looked like Father Caught up with Tyron's back around 2017 and held on for a couple of years until Tyron shook him off. By eyeball, he had the "Old Man, Bad Back" look, and it looked like a downward trajectory til the end., But he really did seem to progress past that, only to start having leg issues. But he's only 31, and not that old for a HOF lineman. Those guys last. Maybe he can too.

I failed. Should have dumped names and details of the 25 recently injured NFL OT's in my original post.

Most have stopped reading this thread now. If you are a late reader...scroll up/back.

According to Sportsrac he's the 25th highest paid tackle. That's nice to me.

...In 2022 he's the 4th highest paid Tackle (Left or Right) at a CAP hit of $17.5m, In 2023 he's 17 at $17.6m.
If you looked at the list without even the briefest of analysis you'd find.
1) He's third oldest on the list
2) Over the past 3 seasons, the two older players Trent Williams and Lane Johnson have missed (when taking into account unforced rested games) 5 and 11 games respectively.....Tyron has missed 28.
3) Even when Tyron came back last season he was a shadow of the player he was...as shown in the 6 penalties in 5 games (4 for Holding).
4) Contracts are calculated by the Guaranteed CAP hit. For instance Williams and Johnson arent getting cut in 2023 as there's no CAP Saving, however, with Tyron it's a fairly decent saving (especially against production) of $9.6m....its about bang/value for your buck.

The ranking you mention is immaterial it's his and team CAP hit that matters. The basic CAP law is that you cant have expensive veterans throughout the roster and when you are paying them.....THEY NEED TO EARN IT, or they face the hard football decision of getting cut. EVERYONE agree's that $17.5m for a fit (or even comparative to Williams/Johnson level activity) Tyron would be a steel, but he's not even giving half the production.

Now we have a capable (though admittedly inferior) LT in Tyler it's a hard decision, but financially with only $7m of CAP left for next season then he'll have to go, unless he rips up the contract and pay's for less. If you're in any doubt go and check the number of how many FA spaces we have to fill in 2023.

It appears Tyron's rate of injury has been tangibly increasing over the past several years including non-contact injury. So have holding call penalties. We should keep Tyron and manage his time out in the field by spelling him more. He is only 31 but he has been playing for 11 years with the Cowboys at the left tackle position. That is a tough position to continue playing when you have prolonged ankle, neck, back and knee injuries, torn hamstrings and high ankle sprains. What a warrior!

Nobody's doubting Tyron's history, but the harsh reality under the CAP is that you can't 'manage his time out on the field' when he's earning $17.6m against the CAP, especially as there's a replacement.
