...In 2022 he's the 4th highest paid Tackle (Left or Right) at a CAP hit of $17.5m, In 2023 he's 17 at $17.6m.
If you looked at the list without even the briefest of analysis you'd find.
1) He's third oldest on the list
2) Over the past 3 seasons, the two older players Trent Williams and Lane Johnson have missed (when taking into account unforced rested games) 5 and 11 games respectively.....Tyron has missed 28.
3) Even when Tyron came back last season he was a shadow of the player he was...as shown in the 6 penalties in 5 games (4 for Holding).
4) Contracts are calculated by the Guaranteed CAP hit. For instance Williams and Johnson arent getting cut in 2023 as there's no CAP Saving, however, with Tyron it's a fairly decent saving (especially against production) of $9.6m....its about bang/value for your buck.

The ranking you mention is immaterial it's his and team CAP hit that matters. The basic CAP law is that you cant have expensive veterans throughout the roster and when you are paying them.....THEY NEED TO EARN IT, or they face the hard football decision of getting cut. EVERYONE agree's that $17.5m for a fit (or even comparative to Williams/Johnson level activity) Tyron would be a steel, but he's not even giving half the production.

Now we have a capable (though admittedly inferior) LT in Tyler it's a hard decision, but financially with only $7m of CAP left for next season then he'll have to go, unless he rips up the contract and pay's for less. If you're in any doubt go and check the number of how many FA spaces we have to fill in 2023.
His contract is nice lol. Jerry not gonna do nothing with the savings anyway other than give it to LVE and Terrell Basham lol.

Fowler, Pollard. Steele, Wilson, A Brown (or his replacement)..even Hankins/Peters to bolster the depth in the lines.
Nice :muttley:
Yeah based on the salaries they will command…I wouldn’t bring SOME of those guys back Steele is about to be one of the highest paid tackles in the league.

Nobody's doubting Tyron's history, but the harsh reality under the CAP is that you can't 'manage his time out on the field' when he's earning $17.6m against the CAP, especially as there's a replacement.
I agree it would be a prudent move to cut cut a football aging, increasingly injured Tyron Smith rather than retain him at a cost of 17.6 million against the cap. Cutting him loose he would count around 8 million against the cap. I am just implying that if the team for whatever reason decided to keep Tyron they would really have to time manage him by limiting the number of plays or series out on the field and that would still not guarantee he would avoid future injuries. Even though we have a potential replacement in Tyler Smith, going with a durable younger free agent offensive lineman might be better to maintain or increase quality depth on the line.

Oh, I agree that many of these decisions lay in the grey area. With Tyron it's the balance of what he can give, maybe a (very good) rotational swing Tackle akin to Peters, but that would mean he tears up his present contract.

Looking at Peters we can point out he's 40, but all bar one of his seasons he's played in over half the games. gets paid as at a rate slightly higher than Peters contract (and tears up the contract like Tank.

I agree, however, we'd have to replace them and all have been at least VERY serviceable roster pieces. This is my main argument against the Coop/OBJ (and even Gregory) arguments and also to be addressed with Tyron.....we reinvested those CAP savings into building a pretty deep roster.

I know Jerry and many fans like the Stars, but giving a reduced number of Stars more contributory pieces appears to be a decent strategy in 2022 (admittedly a strategy that wasnt planned and fell to us by by luck) .
