He wanted to kitty cat slap at his hands and throw very few punches? It was over a minute and a half into the first round before either of them did more than just dance around each other.
He dominated a sissy. Big deal. I admit to being a neophyte or casual fan. There was nothing about that fight other than the commentator's glowing praise of Silva's past fights that was exciting. It was my first time to see the guy fight. I wish I had got my wish. I saw a lot of dancing, one guy afraid to fight standing up and another afraid to fight if the other guy was flat on his back.
Not impressed.
If Silva were to take the fight to the ground, he is more than capable of holding his own against Leites. Anderson received his black belt from the Noguiera's, which is almost as high an honor as you can possibly get. And if you are wondering, there is a complete difference in who you train with and the type of level you need to be at to receive a higher belt. You could train with a local nobody and be a black belt, while under someone like Eddie Bravo you may only be a purple belt.
But the thing is, Leites is every bit the fighter and even better that Silva is on the ground. However, on the feet, there are few who can even come close to matching Silva. Why would Silva go to the ground and give Leites his only chance in the match when he can keep the fight standing which he will completely dominate?
Unfortunately for Leites, fights do not start on the ground, they start on the feet. And if you want the fight to go to the ground against a fighter like Silva, you have to be willing to get in, take a few shots, then pull guard or go for the takedown. You cannot be afraid of his power and striking, otherwise, you are fighting afraid.
Could you imagine someone like Couture saying, "hey you, come lay down over here so I don't get hit so that I can get the fight where I want it." :laugh1:
I truly believe Silva is just flat bored with the competition and I understand why. There is no one, save for Demian Maia (who has the best BJJ in all of MMA) being able to pull guard, who honestly has the slightest chance against him.
My suggestion -- put his next fight at 205 against someone like Brandon Vera. With Vera you have someone who was a HW, but has the speed of a MW and muay thai abilities that can give Silva a definite challenge. And if Silva can get through that, convince Randy Couture he has one mega-fight left in him at 205 against Anderson.
