Ultimate underwhelmed with Day 1 thread *Merge*

What a huge disappointment. Yeah, sure, both of our offensive tackles will be out from under their contracts in the next 24 months. But offensive tackle wasn't a need. #4 WR is a need. Please Jerry, if we don't address the #5 WR position tommorrow the entire future of the franchise is in serious jeopardy.

Man, I'm so jealous of the Lion and Cardinal fans. Look at how sick their WR corps will be next year. Now there's two great franchises !!!

Both our #1 and #2 recievers are over 30, and our #3 is going to be an unrestricted free agent next year. After that there is only two undrafted rookie free agents behind them.... yeah there is no need at WR at all. Quit trying to be a smart arse and think before you post.

And Sporting News has him as a 4th and PFW has him as a 3-4th rounder.

The whole point of this is that this is a guy who we traded a 2nd round pick away and then we ended up taking a guy who the consensus is that he would have been generally a second day pick.

I hope he becomes the second coming of erik Williams. But I think we did not get good value after trading away the second rounder.

2-4th rounder projection

we took him in the 3rd

Wow ...... what a reach

wou ld you agree that we have similar concerns at tackle next year?

Hmmmm well SI.com has him listed as a 2nd round pick

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2007/draft/players/2909.html

POSITIVES: Nice-sized small-area blocker who works best on the strong side. Patient, plays with good pad level and gets after assignments. Strong at the point, controls opponents and effectively uses his hands.
NEGATIVES: Struggles to adjust, lacks lateral blocking range and playing balance. Not effective in motion.
ANALYSIS: A good-sized blocker who plays with a nasty attitude, Martin is a multi-dimensional lineman with better-than-average potential for the next level. Best in confined quarters at guard, yet also will get consideration as a right tackle.
PROJECTION: Late Second Round

Oooh wow, that scouting summary is really in depth.
How long did it take them to do that? 2 minutes tops? Looks like a cut and paste job to me.

what do you mean? flozell and columbo are spring chickens, and they're locked up for awhile, and behind them we have THE Pat McQuistan, what was he a 1st rd talent?

Yes, sorry forgot to mention that I did agree we need tackle help. I was just trying to make the point that WR position isn't set in stone. My bad.

He was projected by various sources anywhere between the 2nd and the 4th, and we took him in the 3rd. That's not bad at all. You act as if he was supposed to go undrafted.

And you also act like we didn't get a 4th rounder (and a late round swap) in the process. Who would you have taken late in the 2nd that's head-and-shoulders better than Marten and a 4th?

A wr like Jacoby Jones or Paul Williams. At least someone at a position we know we will have a need at soon because of the ages of our players.

Its Sports Illustrated .......

You guys sure are trying to convince yourselves that we drafted badly ..... I am very sorry they did not draft who you wanted them to ....

Yes, sorry forgot to mention that.

I think that is true.

So I can't be upset that we addressed tackle.

Spencer is a pick who can at least contribute alot, and fills a position we're hurting at with ellis down. where's the trouble?

And both of our WR's are still performing at a premium, near Pro Bowl level. Can you say the same thing about Flozell?

And offensive tackle wasn't a need with both of our OT's reaching free agency in the next 24 months? And neither was pass rush considering Ellis is 32 years old and coming off a career ending type of injury?

You guys need to realize ... the NFL isn't fantasy football or Madden. The trenches matter. Detroit and Arizona may put out some great WR's, but they're still bush league franchises.

Sports Illustrated also picked "Panthers over Dolphins in the super bowl" ;)

Flozell made the probowl, TO did not(not saying he didn't deserve it, because he did). Also in 24 months TO will be hitting Free Agency too, and I believe Glenn is also (or was he extended past that, if he was I'm sorry) and Crayton is hitting it in 12 months. So why don't you quit using the 24 month argument, because it doesn't make any since when our WR's are going to be gone in that same timeframe also.

Knock on wood but you have to admit Detroit has a thing about drafting WRs regardless of need in the top of the first round and still haven't clicked. Our last great WR in the first was Michael Irvin. I wanted a WR in the first round last year but was proven wrong. I wanted a mid draft WR and may catch one in the fourth. Got to get another WR to back up TO and Glenn sooner or later instead of relying on our usual gang of suspects.

No, it's just that I am having a hard time seeing the positive in this pick. If someone can convince me, then I am open to it but even the scouts that have him going in the second says that he lacks athletic ability and those are the guys that usally get abused in the pros. From what I have read, this guy is a backup at best and I feel we had more important needs that should have been addressed here when we could have gotten someone similar to this guy later on.

We can draft a receiver very high next year if it comes down to it... people don't realize this.

Imagine if we get michael bush in the 4th, and he is healthy in 08, combine that with a receiver high in 08, and we've got a young offense...

Good thing that has nothing to do with their draft analysis.

I hope your right, Maybe they are better at analysing players then they are at teams :D

Jerry Jones addressed this. He said TO and Glenn are the starting WR's this year AND next year. In his mind, Jones think we can find replacements for them in free agency, the draft and existing players on our roster before the start of the 2009 season.

Yeah, FLozel went as a 3rd alternate after two guys in front of him ducked out. Big whoop.

Jerry said tonight that he expects Glenn and TO to play two more years under contract. Flozell is leaving after this year.

I'm sorry to bust your obvious WR fetish, but they just aren't that important to building a franchise.. And anyone we took in the 3rd round was fighting for a roster spot. If we need a free agent WR if need be, he'll cost about half as much as if we need to address an offensvie tackle in free agency. They are just not that highly valued.
