FINS CLOSE TO HIRING IRELAND
Posted by Mike Florio on January 2, 2008, 1:58 p.m.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins are close to hiring Cowboys exec Jeff Ireland to be the first General Manager of the Bill Parcells era.

Ireland, the V.P. of college and pro scouting in Dallas, was immediately linked to Parcells, even before Parcells was headed to Miami. Ireland’s name first came up when it looked like the Tuna would be taking over the Falcons.

The only other person interviewed for the job was Jets director of college scouting Joey Clinkscales. Some league insiders believe, however, that the Clinkscales interview was intended merely to comply with the spirit of the Rooney Rule, which does not technically apply to the filling of front-office jobs.

Dolphins finalizing hiring of Jeff Ireland as GM

The Dolphins are currently in the process of finalizing the hiring of Jeff Ireland as their new general manager.

Club owner Wayne Huizenga flew to the team's training facility at 12:20 -- yes, I said flew as in aboard his helicopter -- to meet the man who will work hand in hand with football czar Bill Parcells.

Although the deal is not yet final, it is believed very little can get in the way of this becoming official. Only a glitch on contract negotiations, or a glitch with the Dallas Cowboys who currently employ Ireland, or perhaps Ireland insults Huizenga's family (kidding) could keep the hiring from happening.

Parcells had dinner with Ireland last night and showed up to the training facility with the guy at around 8 a.m.

Ireland to Miami

Jeff Ireland will be Miami's new general manager.

Ireland, 37, agreed to a deal with the Dolphins today after meeting with Bill Parcells for the last two days. Ireland has been the Cowboys Vice President of College and Pro Scouting since 2005, taking over for Larry Lacewell.

He and Parcells, the Dolphins' executive vice president of football operations, developed a tight bond in Parcells' time as Cowboys coach.

It's official: Ireland's gone ... "immediately"

The Dolphins just put out a press release, trumpeting the hire of Cowboys director of college and pro scouting Jeff Ireland as the team's new general manager, something Todd reported on a little while ago. The important piece of news on this expected move is that Miami is saying it is "immediate", meaning the Cowboys won't force him to stay in Dallas through the draft, as some thought they would.

Does this mean we get compensation for Ireland? If they try to hire him before the draft, I believe Dallas has to get compensation. I'de swap 1st rounders with Miami thank you very much

:laugh2: Sounds good to me too. Seriously, I hate to see our staff being targeted by everyone. It is the price of success, but we haven't achieved THE THING yet. At least Jimmy Johnson's staff won the big one before everybody started swooping in like vultures.

Time to move on. Jerry has only himself to blame. I hope he has someone in line that he trusts as much as he did Ireland.

Good for Ireland, bad for us. But you can't stop progress, so I wish him well. There was no way he would stay here unless he became the GM.

EXACTLY...the Pats are the current dynasty...why don't teams rid them of their o-coordinator or front office staff...or how about the Colts, who have had sustained success..or the Eagles..who won the NFC East like 5 times in the last 6 years....these people want to crack jokes about us not winning playoff games....but here we are before the playoffs even start and our staff is getting distracted....this is just insane to me. Can't we be allowed to at least get this team back on the map...because we have not won JACK yet.....and quite frankly we are not playing well...so this is just very annoying

I suspect finalizing the deal includes negotiating with the Cowboys for compensation. I will be pissed if Jerry just lets him walk before the draft if NFL rules say personnel guys cannot leave until after the draft. The next thing we are going to hear about is out best scouts joining Ireland in Miami. JJ better work out some nice compensation for allowing this if he didn't have to.

Look, i like Ireland, but he can be replaced as long as the philosophy and organizational structure stay intact. Thank god Stephan Jones is family, I think he is one of the best guys in the biz at managing the cap. He is the one that would be hard to replace.

Anyone who thinks Parcells sucks so bad should have no problem with anything he does in Miami. Personally, I'm not looking forward to the next few drafts....

Interesting though that no names have surfaced from the Colts or Patriots as being qualified for Parcells' lackey.

The problem is, Parcells is taking away the guy that JJ hired and made known to Parcells, i.e. JJ's guy...

I just hope we get something for Ireland, maybe a low draft pick.

I just hope Parcells chokes on a chicken bone and never realizes a winning season in Miami. Did not like the guy with Giants, Jets or Patriots, did not like him being hired in Dallas, did not like him in Dallas and like him less then ever now. He's a freaking Diva who can't survive with out the spot light on him but will chastise any player who does the same thing. His time has passed and soon Miami will see that just as he does every where he goes once the fun has worn off and the heat is turned up he will leave for some other place that will stroke his ego.
