This is why DEN and HOU have denied everything so far........it would have been tampering

the rules are very clear and Romo is under contract, not a FA or on a Franchise Tag

this is actually a pretty big change

This right here:

"Any public or private statement of interest, qualified or unqualified, in another club’s player to that player’s agent or representative, or to a member of the news media."

"Any interference by a member club with the employer-employee relationship of another club or any attempt by a club to impermissibly induce a person to seek employment with that club or with the NFL."

Jerry and the Cowboys are now giving express permission to the other NFL teams to 'talk' to Romo within certain degrees, but even here it is qualified. Jerry is dictating the terms of conversation.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I'm going to laugh when he goes to a team other than the two obvious ones.
Unless it is Cleveland, the Jets, the Rams, Jacksonville or San Francisco, everyone else is pretty much set.

There should be a post June 1st Trade designation as well

It would have helped moved things along here and is only fair to the player

Well prior to this I don't think the Cowboys allowed any teams to talk to ROMO or Romo to other teams.

So there is a bit of an update. Whether it amounts to a hill of beans is another story.
Ahh, ok, I was under the assumption that it was just a given that they had that flexibility all along.....might be why the interest has been so light.

I don't see why any team listed would be interested besides maybe jax. None will be contenders with him so they might as well go young.

This will be settled by 17 Apr. No way they let Romo in the bldg. to start off season activities.

Joel Corry's tweet is exactly what will transpire when Romo speaks with other teams. By allowing teams to directly contact Romo and his people, it is the equivalent of allowing Romo to do his free agency tour. They will likely negotiate the deal he will sign once he is released.

that is why he won't get released.......there is nothing in it for DAL

Do you (or anyone out there) know what the cap hit would be in a scenario where Romo retires after June 1st?

It's very simple. The only two teams so far to show interest in Romo are the Broncos and Texans. The Broncos may "want" Romo, but don't "need" him, while the Texans need and want him. As such, there is only one real interested party, which is the Texans.

What Jerry is doing is announcing to the league they can talk to Romo about his contract, which alludes to the fact that a reworked contract might be a possibility before or after a potential trade takes place.

The reason for this is simple .. he's putting pressure on the Texans, who until now have been the only interested party so they could wait the Cowboys out. The goal is to create a potential for more interested teams to enter the mix which will 1) greatly reduce the chance of Romo being released and 2) push the Texans to pay more than they want draft-pick wise.

The Texans' fallback plan was probably to wait until after the draft and then offer a 2018 draft pick instead of a 2017 if they were forced to trade for him. Jerry is simply upping that time frame.

It has and continues to be a case of who will blink first.

Yup...basically announcing he's putting Tony on the open-bidding market. Now the Texans cant sit back and wait on Broncos but 30 other teams could now be involved.

Natural next step. At this point I find it unlikely that we get something of value for Romo. It seems interested parties are content to wait us out. But this was a logical and responsible move by Jerry and co. and we'll see if it can shake loose any new interest.

The Broncos and Texans now kknow any team can reach out and begin the process of convincing Romo to take a new contract and the merrits of their rosters. Time will tell.

DAL would take a 10.7m cap hit this year and a 8.9m cap hit next year

They could, if JJones wanted to, go after his signing bonus money that was paid but wasn't earned but that would be a long shot

Romo is 3 years into a 6 year extension and was paid a 25m signing bonus......he could be liable for up to 12.5m if he retired........DAL could push for repayment of 4.2m every July for the next 3 years as long as Romo stayed retired.... that money would come off the salary cap as well
