@bkight13, I hear you and all the others who believe a trade will occur or Romo will just remain a backup in Dallas or retire, BUT I still firmly believe he will be released.

Guess we shall see.
Matt Cassel got a 5th round pick.......how could Romo not get much more?

Bradford got a 1st and 3rd
HOU traded Osweiler and a 2nd for 16m in cash

JJones has to hold out for something of value

That Osweiler one is kind of counter to the others. Nobody got anything of value for Osweiler. In fact, the Texans had to pay just to get rid of him. That's not a good benchmark from the Cowboys perspective.

What's it going to be then, eh?

that is why he won't get released.......there is nothing in it for DAL

Name the last time a marquee player was told they could shop for a trade only to have them return, get paid a lot of money and simply take the back up role?

Putting this out there symbolizes one thing and it will probably break some hearts, he is done in Dallas.

Only a completely foolish organization would expect that they could just go on like nothing happened and keep him as a reserve.

Natural next step. At this point I find it unlikely that we get something of value for Romo. It seems interested parties are content to wait us out. But this was a logical and responsible move by Jerry and co. and we'll see if it can shake loose any new interest.

The Broncos and Texans now kknow any team can reach out and begin the process of convincing Romo to take a new contract and the merrits of their rosters. Time will tell.

@Toruk_Makto, just my opinion, but teams that Romo doesn't want to play for won't even get a conversation with him or his reps. Jerry essentially put the ball in Romo's court if you ask me. It's either Houston or Denver via trade/w restructure of current deal or he gets released.

No, but it could potentially open up the conversation for a couple other teams like jags or chiefs, for example.

Unless it is Cleveland, the Jets, the Rams, Jacksonville or San Francisco, everyone else is pretty much set.
Jacksonville could be a sleeper. There is a lot of high level talent on that roster held back by overrated Blake Bortles. whoever has Romo between the Texans and Jags instantly becomes the favorite in the AFC South.

Don't really see how that will push things along... maybe so teams can see if he's willing to take a pay cut?
Anyone interested would prefer an incentive based deal. Total number may be the same or higher, but theyd probably want to cover their tail some vs injury.

Yeah but if he isn't interested in playing for the other team he doesn't have to have discussions with them at all. He can merely say, "Thank you but not interested". Then the other team will have to trade for his current deal with no modifications and will be getting a player who already advised them he didn't want to play for them. Can't see it happening like that...again, just my humble opinion.

I'm going to laugh when he goes to a team other than the two obvious ones.

The problem is, Romo wants a SB. What possible contenders, aside from Denver or Houston, don't have starting QB's? Romo is not going to play for a team that is not ready to contend.....

People keep equating Romo to other QBs and what they brought in a trade

This has little to do with how good he is when healthy....everyone knows he's light years better than guys like Bradford or especially Cassell.

But
  • he will be 37,
  • has suffered all those recent injuries,
  • has played little in two years, and
  • (not sure if this matters) has 14 mil due this year and 54 over three years.
  • And the available field is radically limited by where he will play (he's not a slave)

Its just not comparable to other situations

DAL would take a 10.7m cap hit this year and a 8.9m cap hit next year

They could, if JJones wanted to, go after his signing bonus money that was paid but wasn't earned but that would be a long shot

Romo is 3 years into a 6 year extension and was paid a 25m signing bonus......he could be liable for up to 12.5m if he retired........DAL could push for repayment of 4.2m every July for the next 3 years as long as Romo stayed retired.... that money would come off the salary cap as well

thx

I was wondering if jeri & Romo could work out a deal where Romo retires publicly (but doesn't file papers) on 6/1. In exchange, the Cowboys don't require the bonus be paid back (This frees up the roster spot for Dallas, allows Dallas to keep his rights and not have to worry about injury in training camp while Romo would be free to speak with all teams.) but let it be known Romo would still play for the right team and Dallas still allows teams to talk/meet with Romo.

Seems like a reasonable deal between the two parties but of course I'm biased toward whats best for the team

As far as the recent news by jeri, it strikes me as a sign of weakness in an attempt to drum up interest or at least the appearance of interest because there currently isn't any. He should have implied this immediately after they were eliminated from the playoffs in my opinion, I see no advantage to waiting until now.

I dont disagree....but its always supply and demand.

"Hey houston, I want to sign and play for you, but Jacksonville is offering $15mil more guaranteed...lets do something about that"

Has played little in 2 years is a positive imo.

I have always thought that the Jags could be a sleeper in terms of a team he might be interested in playing for...Coughlin is there now and the atmosphere in the building likely has changed. As you said, dogunwo, there is a great deal of young talent on the roster. Imagine if they draft Dalvin Cook or Fournette to give Romo the running game he had in Dallas with Murray. They play in the lowly AFC South as well so who knows...
