I know people hate on him, but I trust Jerry when it comes to stuff like this. I think this is a genius move by him. All it takes is one team to fall in love with Romo and cough up some good draft picks and trade as long as he agrees to take a pay cut.

Plus, if a team that Romo isn't really too fond of offers a big trade, I think Jerry will do it. He's protecting the relationship with Romo because he's giving him the opportunity to create his own market.
So why wait till now to do this ??
Seems like maybe nobody had called, so they thought maybe they would call tony or his agent lol.
Truth is this was all handled badly from the start.

The cowboys or jerry should say they will keep tony for 2017 if they dont get a good offer.
Then run a good bluff or really keep him .

I'm going to laugh when he goes to a team other than the two obvious ones.
That would be awesome and I would love to watch the qbs at Denver and Houston try to play. John Elway is so full of bs.

Houston and Denver already lost their 2nd round picks....part of the reason they are hell bent on not losing any more picks.
Np, they haven't. Houston has pick 57 and Denver has pick 51. Denver has 10 picks.

If we keep Romo and Cam Newton doesn't recover or Big Ben gets injured in August and we get a 1st and a 3rd like PHI got for Bradford would these couple extra months of drama be worth it?...Absolutely

Especially since we only gain unspendable cap space if we release him

I can wait all summer

That is right. I guess most teams are willing to make moves early in the season and only pay up for something in desperation late in the season. So are we gambling for someone to have an injured qb this year?

The Cowboys aren't gambling. The teams that are gambling are Houston, Denver, and Jacksonville. Their qbs suck, they aren't going to win anything with the qbs that they have.

I've been saying for a month to let Romo talk to teams. To me, the main purpose is to try and flush out one more interested team. If a team takes Jerry's offer and opens up talks with Romo, it will force Houston's hand and they will have to start talking trade. This simple action may be enough to get Houston to move before any other team goes behind their back and grabs Romo.

That was my reaction too. When a FA has two teams faced off you will often see an article show up of a "mystery team" entering the bidding - which is just a rumor planted by the agent to get things moving.

This "permission to talk" is the NFL GM equivalent of that. It could also mean a trade is close by Romo wants some special non-cash considerations added to contract to close the deal. Something like this would be needed to get special perks down in writing so Romo would sign off on a trade.

I will be shocked if we get anything like a 3rd.........would love to see it, don't get me wrong, I just don't see anything more than maybe a 5th rounder if we are talking a 2017 pick. Now if we are talking a 2018 pick, I think we could make it conditional like a 5th that could improve to a 3rd or something like that.

I just don't see any team giving us anything more than a 5th in this year's draft.
