The first throw, although a little behind him because Austin slowed down a little bit, was catchable, but he didn't look at the ball. He tried to catch it without his eyes. That's something that can be coached. It's not like it slipped through his hands when he was looking at the ball.

Yes, it something to be coached in youth ball or high school. You shouldn't have to coach that stuff in the NFL.

TO drops way too many balls, but he makes up for it with great plays. Had Austin caught the pass from Johnson, maybe I would be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but NFL WR's catch those balls.

That first throw is one you catch with your body. If he does that, he most likely catches it.

hopefully your starting QB will be healthy for the playoffs.

Please, that bum has been put out to pasture and will be quickly forgotten. They'll be looking for another "franchise" QB in two years.

True, but I think a positive is that he played well against the opposition's 1st Team Defense.

He shook Fred Smoot out of his pants and did make himself available for the Brad Johnson pass.

Most of time, we would see him working against scrubs but this was a high intensity game with Playoff implications on the line.

I wonder how much stock Wade Phillips will put into this performance. I believe he put alot of stock in Bobby Carpenter's Preseason performance and you know how that is turning out.

Lot's of different jersey numbers out on the field! That to me was what I liked about the game.

Pretty much 100% wrong. That first ball was a 100% "catch with your hands" type of ball.

Did you not see how fast it was going? If he guides it into his body, he catches it.

I dunno - I think I like the way Hurd adjusts to the ball and his route-running isn't too shabby either. The kid just ain't blessed with game-breaking speed.
Ditto Crayton and he has the experience that makes me feel comfortable with him as a 3 or 4.

Austin looks like a speedy stiff - churn, churn, churn... I doubt he'll be here after next season - if he lasts THAT LONG.

I'd like to see more of Stanback next year. But it's def time to invest a top-shelf pick on the position. While TO is still huge, TG is living on borrowed time - and both are ancient by NFL standards.

Time to get wise...

standbackandwatch has all the tools needed to be at least a solid #2 and if we are lucky a #1. he has the size, speed, wiggle, instinct and hands. not sure about his route running. if he puts it together we have a great player on our hands imho. austin is a stiff, hurd is a crayton clone.

You've never had a coach, or anyone for that matter, teach you how to catch a football, have you?

I agree he need to try to catch everything with his hands. If you want to watch a pro watch Tony Gonzalez if you want to watch a college kid watch Malcolm Kelly.

I never played football.

Are you telling me a catch using your body wouldn't be easier in that situation? The saftey took a bad angle so, it's not like he would have hit Austin and knocked the ball out had he tried using his body.

The ball had some heat on it, so using your hands would make it a harder grab. That's still a catch that a professional football player HAS to make.

That's exactly what I'm telling you. And the more heat on the ball, even MORE do you want to use your hands, not your body. A ball coming at you with heat will bounce right off your pads if you let it get to your body.

My college coach use to make us go through a whole bunch of different catching drills. Not a single one of them had use using our body to catch the ball.

It's easier to catch a ball with heat on it using your hands than it is using your body. It might hurt your hands, but you have a better chance of catching it.

Personally, if I were catching a Brett Favre fastball I'd rather use my hands. Cuz even if I got hurt, I'd rather it be my hands to get hurt then to have the ball hit me in the "Midsection".

My JHS gym teacher always told us to cradle the ball. But he also told us to tip the ball and catch it on the rebound ... so I'm taking his advice with a grain of salt.

Stanback will replace Austin in 08

I doubt it. He apparently hasn't shown much pass catching or route running skills to warrant time in a meaningless game. While his speed is intriguing, it's of little value when playing the "gunner" on special teams. Lots of guys can do that.

:laugh2:I wouldn't mind seeing him instead of TO. And it is possible; I wouldn't put TOs chances of playing the first game at more than 50/50.

UR not gonna see anyone cause ur gonna lose in Seattle.

If we waste any first, second, or third round picks on a WR and I'll beat the crap out of Wade, Ireland, Jerry, and I'll even drive to Miami and beat the crap out of Parcells too.

That is exactly why you catch it with your hands which are much softer than your pads, which will make the ball bounce off you. Any coach on any level will tell you that.

Ok... so are we overreacting and not giving Austin enough time? playing time?

Or does it seem to be a foregone conclusion that he is what he is?

Would Stanback been able to make those catches? How are his hands? I know there is limited footage on him with us... but...?
