I could see Jerry giving him the GM title, but not the power of final say. The title means little unless you are calling all the shots.
As long as what we're doing is working and getting us notoriety as drafting well, the rest means nothing.

Obviously, no other NFL team has been able to outbid Jerry for McClay's services. He likes Jerry, Stephen & Garrett and he likes the team and
the city. Jerry can pay him any amount it takes to keep him so look for him to stay in BigD for awhile yet.

I think we may have finally started to clean up our 2nd round head scratchers too.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves now. And if thats true, the fact it took this long is kind of sad. But.... Jerry

who cares anyway?
what is Belichek's title in NE? Anyone care?
good work in the NFL gets noticed and gets compensated.
Jerry has never been shy about paying fair market value for guys going well beyond their title.

I'm sure I'm not the first to bring this up... McClay isn't the first "celebrity" Cowboys scouting director. Not that anyone could know, but just wonder how much Murchison/Schramm was paying Gil Brandt back-when.

I would not suppose that until it becomes more than a one year outlier.

Gereon Conley was gone in the first. Joe Mixon and Sidney Jones went earlier.

There really were not a bunch of talented but red flag type of prospects (injured/character) to fit the profile.

In fact, the next one picked was Moreau and finally to our own pick in Lewis. Honestly, I expected them to jump all over Moreau with pick 60.

There has to be that element of getting some great talent at a bargain price.

McClay will leave when he is ready to build and or rebuild a team from scratch. I'd bet he is thinking he is about 3/4 of the way their in Dallas and would not be surprised if he leaves in 1-3 years.

Garrett wasn't getting paid more than Wade. He was getting paid the same. Then Wade asked for a raise and basically got it...if he could just finish the season. Instead, he went 1 and freaking 7.

Anyway, the GM position is overrated in the NFL. McClay was hired because of the Sharrif Floyd gaffe by Ciskowski in 2013. Ciskowski is still with the organization, McClay basically coordinates the draft and gets the scouts and coaches on the same page. It's still important, but it's not nearly as important as a HC and coaching staff that does a good job of developing talent.

I am a diehard Cowboys fan. But I want McClay to have the title that is universally recognized by the NFL...for the job he is doing. And if Dallas will not do that...then he needs to leave. It's BIGGER than my fandom! The fact that Jerry has gotten away with doing this for years....makes me concerned that his son will try to do the same thing. I love the direction of this team TODAY. But lets not forget how rudderless and clueless this was for YEARS....and in spite of the good vibes we are feeling....we still have not gotten passed the divisional round of the playoffs in over 20 years. My hope is the Dak does not get caught up in all that comes with being the Cowboys QB...and focuses on finishing the deal.
Your issue clearly has more to do with Jerry not relinquishing the GM title and nothing to do with Will McClay getting some sort of recognition you think he deserves.

After reading the article, Wade, comes off very bitter. You can tell he was personally offended with Jason's role on the team. Really weak to throw Garrett under the bus years later as well. If he did not do it after the game and voice his concerns at that time then no reason to do it now.

No head coach should ever have to deal with something like that. And he has a right to be bitter about it. It is rare even in "real life" to see a subordinate get the same or even more than a superior in the chain of command. It defies common sense, regardless of the circumstances.

That said, he tolerated it to begin with, so I do not feel sorry for him.

You simply do not hear about these kind of things until well after the fact. I cannot think of another situation that immediately comes to mind. The closest was in Tampa when Glazer feared losing his OC Dirk Koetter, so he fired Lovie Smith and promoted him. That was cut throat, but at the same time gave Smith at least the courtesy of not putting him into a position where he was undercut like that.

Depending on the field it is not uncommon for the employee to make more than their boss. It happens all the time in IT.

As for Wade, he should have quit if he did not feel he was paid what he was worth. That is 100% on him for accepting the position. If he won in Dallas then he would have been paid accordingly. Jerry would have stepped up or another team would have.

An interesting piece of trivia is Ciskowski is the scout who signed Larry Allen's pre-draft scouting report. It's hung up in The Star is and is no where near as glowing as you'd suspect.
Larry Lacewell always used that as his claim to fame but it was Ciskowski's name on the team scouting report.

Why leave a job you are happy with and being compensated well?

Hope he stays a long long time.

:flagwave:

Exactly. McClay made it abundantly clear that that's the case with him now and probably for some time to come. Sure, it wouldn't be surprising if some owner somewhere made McClay an offer that, moneywise, was hard to refuse. It also wouldn't be surprising if Jerry outbid that offer. As far as McClay's contentment with his present position, he's as happy as a pig in poop to stay put. I'm hoping it remains that way for a long time to come and well beyond that, to be sure. He already has a much better thing going for him than most GMs -- why mess with that?

Not sure what to say here except what the heck are you talking about? lol.
Jerry gave McClay a job in football and has promoted him to ever increasing roles and salaries.
McClay is universally lauded for draft hits while Jerry gets blame for any mistakes.
Job titles actually mean fairly little UNLESS you are looking to leave.
Your salary and day to day duties matter. McClay is obviously not being treated in any fashion that makes him desire to leave and yet his name will remain the hottest one on the market.
There are few people on the planet with a better job than Will McClay.
Suggesting he must leave is about as goofy as it gets.
Some Cowboy fans makes my head hurt. It's like they sit around and try to out foolish one another.

Remains to be seen... He'll never have the GM tag while in Dallas. The money might be the same-- but he could definitely have more power and recognition in other places.
I don't think that's the case. I think he and Stephen might have an understanding in which he is guaranteed to be the GM when Stephen takes over for the Cowboys. Jerry has deep pockets so I'm sure he's paying him better than a lot of GM's.

Put yourself in Will's shoes. It's very easy to decline a "promotion" when you already make that type of money. Why would he leave? He seems to have a full grasp and freedom over the scouting department. I think he's going to be with the Cowboys for a really long time.

I think he is already the GM, but just doesn't have the title. Who cares about a title when the money is coming in?
