Was Davis expected to get more than Eric Steinbach coming into FA?

He didn't get more than Steinbach so this thread is moot.

You think that's going to stop the complaining?

Cue the "over paid" athletes thread, followed by the "for the love of the game" shtick. Followed by the "for that money, we should have gone after X" rant. Each accompanied by over use of :banghead: that thing.

Me thinks that if Davis was a Golden Domer there would be much less whining and crying.

Then why not get the better guard in Steinbach- who by the way can play center and was a tackle in college?

Yeah looks as though the Cowboys overpaid once again....
Not in todays NFL with the salary cap so high. That is just what it took. Look at what amount of cash Gurode just got.

You guys do not want to face the distinct possibility that we overpaid for an underperformer when we might have been able to get better for the SAME amount of money.

maybe that guy didnt want to play here Burm

also, maybe Steinbach doesnt fit what we want to do offensively...the guy is a string bean by OL standards, especially interior OL's...he is only an average run blocker and getting a consistent run game has been a problem for us for years

This is just the same as you not wanting to face the fact that playing in Arizona has an effect on just about every budding NFL star. Along with the fact that you don't want to face the fact that we may have very well gotten ourselves a mauler at Guard that will feed off of Tony Sparano. Same Same...

That's just it. When he played guard he did not underperform. We didn't sign him as a tackle. We signed him as a guard. He got the league average for guards this year. Period.

Maybe we got the best player that wanted to come here and play, that's a distinct possibility too.

Then why has EVERYONE but you rated Steinbach as the better guard?
Blaming being in arizona is a cop out. Where did Glover come from? NO- where they had stank for years.

I had nothing about Steinbach only wanting to go to one place, like Bentley did last year. Unless you got something to prove that, I say we messed up.

I don't think anyone can legitimately claim that Steinbach is better at guard than Davis (or vice versa). We'll see how it works out. By all accounts we never even had our sights on Steinbach. I'll assume the scouts were just doing their job.

So we know you are on record of saying you think we messed up and that you have told us in multiple threads and posts that the cards fans were happy to let him go.

Thanks...it means the world to us.

Apparently Davis was the guy they set their sites on. He is a mauler, probably the best run blocker available with Dielman the only other contender to that title. Steinbach is an undersized finesse player. He is very good and a former 2nd round pick, but he isn't the best G in free agency that played that position last year. Dielman is the better run blocker and has repeatedly given up less sacks than Steinbach. Davis back at guard has the most upside at the position because of his sheer size and power, but still may not pass block as well as Dielman has the past two seasons.

while i agree with that i think we never had our eyes on him bacause we thought we could get davis at a cheaper price and he would give us flexibility of OG vs OT (in case colombo did not sign). we misjudged the market, cleveland pounced on steinbach and we never got the chance. i bet, in hindsight, if JJ had known we would pay the same for davis, we would have gone hard after steinbach.

just my .02 :)

I like Davis as a player...

As far as being a bust well maybe as far as being the #2 pick over all ...
He is no Pace or Ogden but he was a heck of a guard and you dont pick guards with the #2 over all pick...

I much rather have the 375 pond Davis at guard than the 290 pond Steinbach

Who the hell are you talking to? I haven't rated anybody over anyone. I haven't said we should or shouldn't sign Davis or anyone else. I haven't even said I'm happy about it except that HH31 is sure to hate life because he'll have to root for a Longhorn on a weekly basis.:D

I have to laugh at those that try and claim that Davis was as good as Steinbach. But then again they claim to know more then every columnist, scout, etc that put Steinbach and Dielman as the top 2 guards available.
