Was McCarthy the logical hire or just a feel good after Garrett?

From a résumé perspective, the hiring of McCarthy is an otherwise smart decision as he won a Super Bowl, consistently defeated division rivals and reached the playoffs routinely. From a logical perspective, this hiring feels like it was a mistake.

He is an offensive-minded head coach. McCarthy was an offensive coordinator for seven seasons before becoming a head coach, where he called all the offensive plays. But he was fired in Green Bay for having an unimpressive and stale offensive gameplan (in addition to his rift with Rodgers).

Unless McCarthy has revamped his offensive scheme, then there is little reason to believe that this coaching change will be any different from keeping Jason Garrett.

The hiring of the once offensive guru seemed rushed as the NFL season had yet to officially have concluded. The offseason is where offensive and defensive coordinators are open to head coaching positions, particularly those that are currently a part of a playoff run.

Only time will tell how this hiring will affect the success of the Dallas Cowboys. Time is dwindling, however, as their core and elite talent is aging day-by-day and their fans begin to grow restless over the continuous lack of success.

Let’s hope that Jerry Jones sees something that nobody else sees in Mike McCarthy and he can establish the ‘Boys as a powerhouse .

I think McCarthy was a very good hire and I think the year away from the sideline was good for McCarthy as he brought in assistants to review film or things he has done in the past, looked to different concepts currently being employed and things he saw that was not working.

It was 100% the logical hire. After the coach in training for a decade, this team and the fans needed a proven winner. We all love Sean Payton, but put the records side by side and McCarthy's resume is better. It's not just about the scheme, its about the ability to be A HEAD COACH! He is light years better at that than Garrett will ever be.

I'm not a fan of the hire and don't really have big expectations.

I hope i'm wrong though and he's great.

I just hate that we hired McCarthy and decided to let Kellen Moore call plays.. This will also be used as an excuse for McCarthy too. I wanted him out front and center but now Kellen will be a buffer between him and blame.

Conservative and safe.. That's what the McCarthy hire was.. Conservative has never served the Jones's well when hiring their head coach.

McCarthy is a proven winner and his Packers teams rivaled the best in the league for more than a decade. McCarthy was the perfect hire for the Cowboys. A team with a lot of talent in place that really needed an experienced HC to cultivate a winning culture through development of a complimentary brand of football.

What is your measure of success and what is your measure of failure with McCarthy? And how does that compare to the standard you had for Garrett?

LOL. McCarthy was easily the best candidate for this team.
It was hardly just Jerry seeing anything.
This is a team ready to win now and you wanted a guy who has done so.

This was easily the best hire since Parcells.

How is it an excuse?, this is his choice to allow Moore to calls plays. I have no doubt he will be working very closely with Moore so that they are constantly on the same page with each other. McCarthy can't just be the offensive coach he has to be Head Coach for this entire team and they need to see that. If things fail that is on McCarthy since he has been given a lot of leeway in putting this staff together.

Made every excuse in the world for the never-will-be head coach and then tries to insult the guy that's actually won.

Succeeds in nothing more than looking like a fool.

Because I saw what a lot of people on this forum did with Linehan when it came to putting the blame where it belonged..

Same will happen with McCarthy and Kellen if this doesn't work out and it will prolong things for McCarthy because eventually he will call plays if things aren't working out.

I do not for 1 second think it was his idea to have Kellen Moore be the playcaller. Maybe i'm wrong but I doubt it.

I think the McCarthy hire has the potential to go either way. I think there are reasons for optimism and there are signs of concern as well. I’m optimistic because it’s no fun being a pessimist. But I understand both sides.

    Reasons for Hope
    • A New coach always brings a new feeling of hope. Especially an accomplished coach like MM whose teams have played in multiple championship games including SB.
    • MM hired his own staff instead of having one rammed down his throat.
    • MM is good at developing young QBs.
    • MM was hired as a “win now” hire. If he doesn’t produce a better result than we had with Garrett I think he will be shown the door in 2-3 yrs no what his contract is.
    • MM has a style that engenders toughness. Something this soft team has needed for years.
    Reasons for Doubt
    • Jerry is still in charge. The architect of the last quarter century still thinks he is a “football guy”. That’s scary. And despite what any say on these boards Stephen is still second fiddle.
    • Coach Mac was HC in an org that was owned by the people of GB. He’s about to learn what having an intrusive owner looks like.
    • Did I mention Jerry’s still in charge and hasn’t seemed to have learned that much?
Bottom line for me is I’m still optimistic. I think this was a good hire, all things considered. But I also believe the MM window is a lot smaller than Garrett had. If he doesn’t take this team upward within 2 years, I think he will be gone. Gonna be fun!

It sure did when they hired Bill Parcells. He turned around a 5-11 Dave Campo-led, talentless wreck of a team into the 13-3 team that Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett inherited.

Linehan was never given the lee way of McCarthy, 1st off McCarthy is making this call not Jerry. Linehan as OC was not the HC. People can slam Moore all they want but frankly for a 1st year OC he got a lot of production out of this team. Sure there are things he could have improved on and I think McCarthy will be a very good influence on him. As I said in my view this team needs a HC not just an offensive coordinator who is also HC. The entire team needs to see him as the man in charge of all phases of this team not just the offensive side of the ball.

I think he was the logical hire that was also feel good. I was against hiring any college coach, as that would make us an apprenticeship for a college coach to learn and despite the 100s of posts supporting this college coach and that college coach, the track record of college coaches finding success in the NFL is limited. very limited. there were some other candidates, assistant NFL coaches, that were viable but a coach, with a track record and the know how was a better choice. obviously MMC has run a team, won a superbowl, dealth with big egos, and he put a really good staff together. he has a short contract and if results don't look good in 2 years, then you move on. you don't run this one to the end

and with all of that said, we have Jerry. he will meddle. he will screw this thing up as he has done the past 6 times. so did it really matter who we hired?
