Romo provided me with a number of fantastic moments watching football during his career. And a few absolutely maddening moments.

He went from good enough to win it all as long as Bad Romo didn't show up, to almost good enough to win it with a deeply flawed roster. I don't think Brady or Montana could have won any championships with the line and D Romo had during his last 6 seasons. That said, the 2006 and 2007 seasons were his best opportunities and they came before he was at his best. I'm sure Marino can relate.

Wasted, no. Championships can be determined by an awful lot of luck. Having Romo meant we always had a chance. That's all you can reasonably ask for.

Elaborate please. I want to ensure you are coming from where I think you are.

I was just responding to someone who was trying to make a Marino/Romo comparison, i.e. Neither won a SB.

In addition Marino certainly wasn't blessed with a lot of overall talent on either side of the ball for most seasons.

If by not winning a SB or enough playoff games, then yes. But, I don't think it was wasted, he gave us fans some great memories, also drove us nuts at times with careless turnovers...I wish the team would have done more to surround him with elite talent, just wasn't meant to be I suppose.

He absolutely was not. Some of the Miami defenses were as awful as any Romo endured and Marino never got the support of any running game like Romo enjoyed at least a couple of seasons.

To some degree, yes.
Mostly (not always) total crap defenses.

Part of it was just bad luck timing wise.
When the game finally totally slowed down for him and the team built a great line (still weak D) his body was borderline donated to science.

He had a very good career that should (and could have) been truly great.
Part of that is on him too, btw.

Yep.

Tony Romo was a very good QB... But certainly not at Dan Marino's level.

He also kept Garrett from being fired...........all those 8-8 seasons would have been 3-13 seasons without Romo doing his magic.
All too true. The Cowboys 20 plus years of mediocrity would have been overcome much faster if the team would have been allowed to suck as bad as it should have for a few years, without Romo's heroics. Better draft picks and better coaches give us better teams.

Better draft picks and better coaches give us better teams.

And both are not possible with organizational problems. You can lose a lot and still blow the draft picks. You can fire all the coaches you want, but it matters who you pick to replace those you dump.

You are assuming the Cowboys screw up the draft and the coach firing process too. That's a lot of presumptions.

I'm just saying without Romo's heroics, we would have had the opportunity to have better draft picks and different/better coaches.

deeeleete

But yes Romo enjoyed a great run game in 2014.
Those 8-8 teams had terrible olines, run games, a world class sucky defenses though.

Marino was awesome though, so we agree there!

I'd say it was wasted.

Wasted by three different head coaches, two of them incompetent.

Wasted by five different offensive coordinators.

Wasted by horrible drafting by Jerry Jones.

Wasted by stupid trades by Jerry Jones.

Wasted by cancerous free agent signings.

Wasted by having to run for his life for the first 10 years of his career due to horrible offensive lines because Jerry Jones refused to upgrade the offensive line.

Yes, I'd say it was wasted. Had Tom Brady been at Dallas instead of Romo, he too would have struggled. Now Romo at NE with a real coach, real front office might have won some Super Bowls.

In terms of the team/organization...undoubtedly, YES. Romo has amassed eye popping numbers, particularly for an undrafted DII player. But the team has lacked overall in one or more aspects, for 2+ decades.

Tony is one of my favorite Cowboys, and I witnessed the 90's teams. The Cowboys have seemingly found a second consecutive 'Gem' at QB in Dak. Hopefully, his 'hopeful' decade+ isn't squandered. As good as he was as a rookie, he's already 0-1 in playoff games...and there's a very good chance the defense could actually be worse heading into the 2017 season...with the division rivals improving offensively. Aside from guys like Brady & Rodgers...most need a complete team effort to achieve the ultimate goal. Montana, Aikman, Elway, Bradshaw, etc...all were part of exceptional teams. Then occasionally, you'll get a dominant defense that will carry a QB to a super bowl or championship: Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Grossman (bad in the super bowl), Big Ben (his 1st), the Manning brothers, etc.
