I forget what year it was, I thought Washington was going to take A QB and they did not. Probably the year you're talking about. These teams are their own worst enemies. They're not in QB hell for so many years for no reason.

On not picking up his 5th year option. The new CBA made it expensive to pick up a 5th year option. So it doesn't surprise me that teams are electing to not do this. Then come to an agreement after the 4th year. Besides QBs and outstanding players, it's more favorable to not pick up the option.
I don’t fault them if they didn’t like him though. Young should’ve been good.

Played in only 12 games in 2 years with only 3 games played last year. He's been healthy only his 1st of 3 years. Probably a good decision not to pickup the 5th year just in case his injuries linger. But he will probably ball out cause contract year then get paid then stay injured.

Does he become a name to keep an eye on as trade bait during the draft? If Washington is ready to move on why delay the inevitable? I could see a deal based around Chase Young for Jonah Williams make sense. What about a Chase Young for Trey Lance type of swap?
Wouldn't it make more sense to pick up the option if they were planning to trade him? The receiving team would have him for two years instead of a one-year rental which could increase his trade value.

So what does this actually mean when this happens? When they're in the fifth year they can more money? Since he hasn't been available they're not going to pay him all that, they'll just pay him what's left on his current deal??

Not that they would accept it given the whole ownership change issue but here it goes:

SF Trades

QB Trey Lance

Washington Trades

DE Chase Young
2023 2nd round pick (#47 overall)

Washington gets a chance to see what Trey Lance can do with 2 years remaining on his rookie contract (3rd year is a rookie 5th-year option) while SF gets a 2nd round pick(their earliest 2023 draft pick is in the 3rd round) and a #2 overall drafted DE that needs a change of scenery.

Washington can focus their 1st round pick on the best player available and SF can focus on Purdy as the starter with Sam Darnold relieving him as needed.

I would trade 26 for him right now. No questions asked. He’s had 1 injury. Tap the brakes, guys.

C. Young by himself is worth more than Lance. Get a grip

I could see the argument for either side of that argument. Some teams may be hesitant to give up something for Chase if he is guaranteed $17M in 2024.

I think it's fair to say that Young is the better player at this point in their careers, but I'm not sure that means he has more value. Young has 1 year of control vs Lance with 3 (5th year option included). Also just being a QB gives Lance additional trade value. Honestly I could see a straight up deal being pretty close value.

Chase Young is now in the last year of his contract so SF is taking more of a risk and a QB traditionally holds more value than a DE, especially a DE that has only played in 27 out of a possible 49 career games (he only played in 12 games out of 34 the last 2 seasons) and one that has only amassed 9 sacks in those 27 total games played.

There’s more to Chase Young than one injury. If that was the case the team that drafted him 2 overall would’ve picked up the option.

I lived in the DMV for 7 years and still have a bunch of buddies there who are Washington fans. Young has been described by team sources in the media as arrogant, hard to coach, and undisciplined on the field.

After their nice 2020 season, him and fellow DE who’s getting shopped in Montez Sweat, focused only on sacks. There’s some good film out there showing them throwing caution to the wind and selling out for a sack every play which caused a lot of issues for their D for a stretch.

He comes with some baggage it’s not as simple as an ACL injury. Of course Washington is a terrible organization and he could find success elsewhere as he is definitely talented. But it’s just not quite as cut and dry as it may seem.
