Washington declines 5th year option for Chase Young

Who can blame Washington? Young hasn't been on the field enough to warrant a 5th year commitment. This is like what Dallas did with LVE. If Young can stay healthy and live up to his draft position this year no doubt they will try to re-sign him. If he gets hurt again or looks ordinary they will offer him a lowball deal for a year and give him another season to prove it - or they will let him walk. But I predict in 2024 he will be on a short term deal with someone.

There’s more to Chase Young than one injury. If that was the case the team that drafted him 2 overall would’ve picked up the option.

I lived in the DMV for 7 years and still have a bunch of buddies there who are Washington fans. Young has been described by team sources in the media as arrogant, hard to coach, and undisciplined on the field.

After their nice 2020 season, him and fellow DE who’s getting shopped in Montez Sweat, focused only on sacks. There’s some good film out there showing them throwing caution to the wind and selling out for a sack every play which caused a lot of issues for their D for a stretch.

He comes with some baggage it’s not as simple as an ACL injury. Of course Washington is a terrible organization and he could find success elsewhere as he is definitely talented. But it’s just not quite as cut and dry as it may seem.
Yes this is true. But I’m taking a chance on him without thinking twice. Way too much talent there

I don’t blame them… he hasn’t done much.

His rookie season he had 7.5 sacks… 5.5 of them was against 2nd or 3rd string OT’s.

He’s never been impressive.
I’m giving them 26 for him no questions asked

Not me, man. No thank you.

You may be proven right, but he has done nothing to impress me.

If he blows up in a couple of years, feel free to look me up and tell me I was wrong.
agree, too much risk for me. Even if the guy does blow up and have a lights out year you have to turn right around and pay him $25-30MM per year and this team already has several of those contracts to figure out over the next couple seasons.

I agree. No chance I pay him his market value. Not even close.

Not that they would accept it given the whole ownership change issue but here it goes:

SF Trades

QB Trey Lance

Washington Trades

DE Chase Young
2023 2nd round pick (#47 overall)

Washington gets a chance to see what Trey Lance can do with 2 years remaining on his rookie contract (3rd year is a rookie 5th-year option) while SF gets a 2nd round pick(their earliest 2023 draft pick is in the 3rd round) and a #2 overall drafted DE that needs a change of scenery.

Washington can focus their 1st round pick on the best player available and SF can focus on Purdy as the starter with Sam Darnold relieving him as needed.
I like the trade but there's talk that Purdy won't start the season (won't throw until June) and then you have to see how he responds. Big gamble for a playoff team with an elite defense already. I'd want to keep both QBs.

How is it smart to decline an option for 10 million and franchise him for 20+ million?
The 5th year for him was 16m and the franchise tag was 18m. If he ends up being worth the tag he gets an extra 2m, but if not then he is gone without issue.

If hes available in free agency i take him day one

the upside is too good...

however....hes REALLY good at run support..and hes really good at stopping screen plays

however a #2 pick theyre expecting 15-20 sacks a year and constant pressure and he hasnt done that against good-great competition....

but...the upside is good if you can get him on a team friendly deal
He reminds me of Demarcus Lawrence but physically more impressive. Good players but not glamourous like you noted.

We could probably sign Young cheaper than it would be to re-sign Micah.

Keep it in your thoughts.

Too much upside man. Way too much.

With his injury history, Jerry surely would have set him up for life.

On not picking up his 5th year option. The new CBA made it expensive to pick up a 5th year option. So it doesn't surprise me that teams are electing to not do this. Then come to an agreement after the 4th year. Besides QBs and outstanding players, it's more favorable to not pick up the option.
True but this is a serious blow to this kid. Considering he was drafted 2nd overall, they are basically saying you have not proven worthy of a 2nd contract. It appears he's never gotten out of Riveria's dog house from the off-season following his rookie year. He blew off team workouts in his hometown and work on his brand. Riveria was livid and didn't hide it in public.

I think Young had it too easy in college. Pure talent got him by just fine.

Not so much in the NFL. I'm not sure he really wants to truly work hard at it. Really WORK. I dunno....just a thought.

I seen all his games while at OSU.
Played great against lesser talent. Against better talent he was up and down. But in big games he seems to disappear somewhat. When they needed a big play, he did not make them as he did against weaker opponents.

His injury has held him back, possibly, in the NFL so far. Or as you said, does he really want to work that hard as the competition is better.

I'm not sure it was smart move, but it probably wasn't a dumb move, either. His 5th year option was just above $17 million. If he does perform well this year and they decide to go the franchise tag route it will cost them more than that, but this move seems to indicate they don't expect him to do so.

This is a perfect example of a union not benefitting their members. I've been in unions all of my life, over 30 years. What does this have to do with what you said? I'll explain.

Had the union not edited the 5th year option to be more lucrative in the last CBA, maybe Washington overlooks some of the flaws and picks up his 5th year option. Making the 5th year option a lot more expensive will cause teams to second guess picking it up for anyone but the best players. Then looking to work out a separate contract afterwards. Like we did with LVE.
