Best analysis of this disaster of a pick and the timing of this announcement is the fact that Dan Snyder was his biggest fan and since he is selling his franchise he doesn't want to be the one who releases him. In the end he is one of only two draft picks in the top 2 who have not had their 5th year picked up. Sad.

Man I remember thinking he would be nearly a can't miss prospect. Has a ton of talent, just can't stay healthy so I don't blame Washington for not picking up that option

Young needs to sign a show me contract and actually play. He has played in 27 out of 50 possible games in his career. 12 out of the last 34.

I think he just isn’t that good…
I remember another guy. South Carolina. Greatest DL prospect ever. Supposed to rewrite the history books. Guy was a superstar before he did a thing. I think Young is from the same ilk. You have to work to be great in the NFL.

His injury must be career threatening
Nope, but he has never lived up to his draft status. Even if healthy, would you want to pay him 18 million, all guaranteed on a fifth year option. He has done less than Jadaveon Clowney

Keep him for what? He’s a FA after this season
If they planned on keeping him they had the option and passed. They’d be nuts not to trade now and take what you can get. Next year you get nothing unless he has a career year then you might get a comp the next year
A fourth is equivalent to nothing. I’d rather have him this year than take a 4th.

A 4th beats him walking next year and you get nothing. Obviously he’s out the door after this season and they know he’s not gonna make a difference in whether they have a good or bad season
Why not get something you can use to improve the team now and save some money too
If he was considered a part of the future they would have used the option

Change of scenery could do him good.... I would not mind him wearing the star next season.

Word I heard is that he never really tried to improve his array of moves. In college, he could put athletic people, couldn’t do it in the pros but didn’t bother much with trying to improve techniques.

Because they are contending this year. A fourth does nothing for contending this year.
