We are crowded on the DL

I think Thornton would need to have a terrible training camp in order to be cut.
I'm not sure that Thornton wouldn't have to do something more then under produce in training camp. Maybe a mid level felony? It just doesn't make sense to cut him this year without a highly drafted rookie to split snaps with Paea. I guess Ivey could end up being insanely good and force an issue, but that seems like a long shot for a UDFA in year one.

You're probably right. IMO he's the best #1 DT on the roster vs. the run. I would give Paea the nod when it comes to rushing the passer.

Regardless if Thornton was released it would create a big hole at that position, i.e. 1 technique DT.

So many still just seem to see DE and DT as the DLine positions, as opposed to SDE, WDE, 1T, and 3T which all require slightly different bodies, though SDE and 3T are frequently rather close.

Also Dallas is using a 3-man DL quite a bit.

as far a crowded goes, that can change quickly. Dont mean to jinx anyone, but it seems a ankle gets tweaked, a back problem jump up (D.Law/Tapper), Crawfords shoulder.............being a DL in the NFL puts extreme wear and tear on a body....its just law of averages.

I see quantity not sure about quality. If half these guys disappeared I don think they'd be missed much.

There's a lot of flex on the DL, so it's hard to know where some players will primarily line up, but here goes.

RDE: Taco Charlton (22/23 Nov), Benson Mayowa (25/26 Aug) - This could be a nice one, two punch with there differing styles
NT: Cedric Thornton (28/29 June), Stephen Paea (28/29 May) - Thornton needs to improve in yr two, Paea may not dress every week
UT: Maliek Collins (22), Tyrone Crawford (27/28 Nov) - These two will get the majority of snaps inside and play together a lot in Nickel
LDE: David Irving (23/24 Aug), DeMarcus Lawrence (25) - I want Irv to start but it could be Crawford, limit Law's snaps in reserve role

Reserves: DE Charles Tapper (23/24 May), Joey Ivie (22) - If Tap stays healthy he may force way into rotation, going long at NT (age, Paea's 1 yr deal)

Practice Squad: DE Lenny Jones (25/26 Aug), DT Jordan Carrell (22/23 June)+

Suspended: Randy Gregory (24/25 Nov)

Let youth be served. There isn't a DL on the off-season roster over the age of 30, the NTs are the old men of the group, Lawrence and Paea are in contract years.
This looks spot on. Good job!

Crawfords days are numbered.I am looking at one of Mayowa,Tapper and Moore to step up and be the starter at RDE.

I doubt it will be this year, versatile, team player and there will be some injuries.

Really don't care who just whoever produces...

Tired of having jags we need some people to step up

without being able to factor in injuries...who stays and who goes?

1. Taco Charlton
2. Demarcus Lawerence
3. Malik Collins
4. Benson Mayowa
5. Cedric Thornton
6. David Irving
7. Tyrone Crawford
8. Charles Tapper
9. Damontre Moore
10.Stephen Paea

Randy Gregory

Jordan Carrell
Joey Ivie
Lenny Jones
Richard Ash

Not sure how many UDFA's we got

Lewis Neal??
Randy Gregory is finished in Dallas. Scratch him off. Ash is probably gone too. Carrell and Ivie on PS.

And you have thos etop 10 guys active.

The next step is realize they often play both DTs as 3techs. Of all snaps for both DTs, they probably use a true 1tech 25% of the snaps.

People should really look at players' contracts. The two biggest names mentioned - Crawford and Thornton - aren't going anywhere. Crawford's salary is now guaranteed and Thornton would cost $2 million more to cut than to keep.

I think the original list gives a good indicator of the pecking order and which guys stay. Damontre Moore is the one longshot who may be able to force his way onto the roster and have the team keep 10 linemen. It wouldn't surprise me to see them go long at this spot, given the number of guys who could be out in 2018.

At that point, Lawrence is a free agent, and they could get out of the deals with Crawford and Thornton if they truly wanted to.

I can see either or both of the 7th round defensive linemen ending up on the practice squad for a year getting some NFL seasoning.

I would love to see them dump Crawford.

This is what I was trying to tell some folks who thought we should have spent our top 3 picks on the DL.

They clearly have exactly zero insight into just how many bodies we have on the unit and how many are young enough and have flashed enough that the team (rightly or wrongly) is not yet ready to completely give up on for a rookie.
:hammer:

Yep, that's exactly how I see it too.
