You just derailed your own argument!!!!!!! If the D sets up the O(which happens a lot), then the points scored aren't fully attributed to the opposing D.

and I just addressed that things like turnovers by a defense, things like 3rd down stop things that put the ball back into the hands of the offense. To me those are critical stats not how many yards the defense allowed.

I think there are a lot of things used to rate a defense and offense outside of yardage. I can point to many games where one team outgained the other team and lost. It becomes a meaningless stat. I would put more into give a ways and take a ways. 3rd down conversion and stopping of 3rd downs. Red zone efficiency and red zone stops. I just tend to feel yardage is not the best indicator of offense or defense.
RIght!!

There are many contributing factors and why depending on the particulars in any given game are talking points on the results.

It wasn’t my intent to discuss how total yards effect individual game results.Only why the NFL uses total yards as the official measurement in rankings.

I really do not know why they will use yards I don't think it is a great measurement for offense or defense. Stat wise Dallas was 8th on defense in yards allowed yet on 3rd down we were ranked 28th, Dallas ranked 15th in sacks and 24th in ints. so did the yardage allowed even though they were ranked 8th really prove they were a top defense? I tend to put more into the 3rd downs allowed, sacks and ints.

I get it when talking about individual stats like passing yard for a QB and rushing yards for a RB or receiving yards for a WR and TE.

Those are all vital contributing factors and excellent talking points when discussing results of the games.

I don't expect everyone to see things as I do. I tend to be a bottom line guy. At the end of the game did the Cowboys outscore their opponent? if they did I'm a happy camper and if not then I will pee on your campfire. lol
