Will someone remind me again, how old was Tom Landry when some claimed the game had "passed him by"?
Well if the results were an indicator then he was done in his mid 60s.

I honestly don't want a 70+ year old coach in Dallas. A rebuild goes for the ideas too. Jimmy was still in his 40s when he came on board. That's something I'd like to see again.

And apart from the age, I don't want another guy over here, who doesn't know when to retire. ;)

Hank Stram had great success with the Chiefs 60’s into the mid 70’s won a SB then got fired in 74 when an aging team went 5-9 . That was the sensible NFL 14 game schedule not this game every night in every country on earth league .

He’s out of football in 75 so John Mecom in New Orleans desperately hires Stram in 76 and with an aging banged up Archie Manning for part of this wreckage they go 9-19 in two yrs and Stram is fired never to coach again .

This is what bringing BB to Dallas would look like.

If Jerry can't get a buddy as head coach, he's probably extending McCarthy.

I'm really worried about a Kellen Moore or even Garrett (can you imagine?) hire .

Early 60s.

There's no claim. He drove the team straight into the dirt as the worst in football.

Thanks for the "history" lesson. That will be my only comment of your descriptions of Tom Landry in his 60's.....wow. :omg:

I brought it up because the circumstances with both coaches were somewhat familiar.

Tom Landry had 20 consecutive winning seasons and Belichick had 19 consecutive winning seasons.

This means that the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots drafted in the bottom third for two decades. Year after year after year every other team got their share of top picks in the draft. It wasn't just the 1st round; it was every round.

If your team played in a Super Bowl then they had one of the bottom two picks in every round of next year's draft. That was 5 times for the Cowboys, 9 times for the Patriots during their respective streaks.

For the 20 seasons from 1967 to 1986 the highest draft pick of their own for the Cowboys was #17 overall. They picked 20th or lower 18 times during those 20 seasons.

Since there are so many fans in favor of the "tank" initiative, they obviously believe that talent is the predominant trait of winning teams.

It follows that the converse is also widely believed. That is, you cannot build a team if you don't have access to a superior level of talent. In addition, any team that has been up for so long will eventually go down. There is no other direction for them.

This is in defense of Belichick's reputation and current ability. There have been many elderly NFL coaches that decided to go coach a small college somewhere. George Allen is an example, Dave Wannstedt is another. Belichick would do a great job if that is what he wants.

I said I wasn't going to respond to the Landry comments.......that's what I said.........but it's tough......

Landry was done. He simply couldn't make the transition this time. Happens. Doesn't take anything away from his greatness.

And it's ok for people having different opinions. I don't want BB here and hope for a fresh young mind. But that's just me. Relax. ;)
