It was obvious after his return from his Navy stint that he would never develop into a star-caliber quarterback.

Just look at the stats:

His first year, he played in six games and completed 23 of 47 passes (48.9 percent) with 1 TD and 2 ints.

The next year, in eight games he completed 44 of 82 passes (53.7) with 2 TDs and 8 ints.

We should have cut our losses at that point rather than try to continue to develop a quarterback coming off a layoff that would obviously keep him from ever excelling in the league.

And I'm guessing that Staubach's mechanics were flawless those first two seasons, which would make his play even worse than the numbers indicate.

No, I just don't like people drawing conclusions about a developing player before the evidence is complete.

Imagine if Dallas had given up on Staubach after two seasons because his numbers didn't support continuing his development. Instead, patience with a player who was behind the learning curve because of his layoff paid off for the Cowboys.

Point taken..... But let me ask you this. How do you think Roger would have fared in NFLE? I think he would have excelled but you know who isn't he's just been so-so IMO. Roger also had leadership skills which I don't see Henson having as of yet maybe its the military that assisted Roger there hey I have an idea lets send Drew off to the Navy for 2 years and see if it helps him. Nah he would never last....You actually have to make a commentment to something and stick with it in the Military....

There's really no way of knowing, but based on Staubach's numbers his first couple of years in the NFL, I'm not sure he would have done any better than Henson has. I mean, Staubach's decision-making obviously was not great considering the number of interceptions to TDs.

The key, though, is that Roger wasn't a ready-made quarterback. It took time to get him there, time that a lot of people here are not willing to give to Henson. (Luckily, Jones appears willing to do that.)

It certainly doesn't mean he'll develop into another Staubach, but he should be given as much of a chance.

I am adding this entry to the dumbest post thread right in-line with 'Who is Bob Lilly?'.

Congrats and good luck on getting in the ring of shame again next week.

Way to put it in perspective, gimmesix. And please stop calling him dumb, he was being sarcastic.

In all of this Henson stuff, I will just let the administration decide when to let Henson go or give him some playing time, and that will probably be next year, so no worries mate.

Staubach couldn't walk on water, he couldn't make the Rhein receivers catch any better than Henson can.

Do you really think I would advocate cutting a Hall of Fame quarterback?

I honestly did not think anyone would not "get" this thread.

WHOA!

Mr Staubach took time away from the game to SERVE HIS COUNTRY in the Navy.

While VERY unproven henson took time away from the game to go play another, totally different game.

you are comparing apples to unripened(sp?) oranges.

I am not sure if little drew did that because he really doesn't love football, or because baseball is his true "love", or because he needed the money(for family reasons), or because he just got greedy, OR maybe deep down inside HE knows HE doesn't have what it takes to be an NFL QB.

Now, don't get me wrong here. I would be thrilled if little drew becomes the next franchise QB for the Dallas Cowboys. I hope he doesn't fall flat on his face. But comparing his situation to Mr Staubach's is just...wrong. IMO.

The reason for their layoffs is not really pertinent in skill/development comparisons.

If anything, Henson's layoff might have hurt him developmentwise worse than Staubach's because he played another sport with different demands on his arm. From what I understand (if I'm correct), Staubach did actually practice playing football aboard ship during his layoff.

Not only did Staubach practice with the team when he could he also played for 4 years at the Academy while, IIRC, Henson only played part of one season in college.

When Roger came into the league he had a lot more games under his belt and a lot more game experience than Henson does.

I used to be a hater, but now I've seen the light. The original post finally convinced me .... the Cowboys should have held onto Chad Hutchinson.

There. I said it.

I would have liked to have seen Hutchinson's development handled better, but he clearly showed in NFLE that his lack of pocket presence was a problem that wasn't going to go away anytime soon even with experience.

I also did not post this to say that Henson would develop into another Staubach instead of another Hutchinson. Just that people are rushing to judgment one way or the other.
