We should have cut Staubach

WHOA!

Mr Staubach took time away from the game to SERVE HIS COUNTRY in the Navy.

While VERY unproven henson took time away from the game to go play another, totally different game.

you are comparing apples to unripened(sp?) oranges.

I am not sure if little drew did that because he really doesn't love football, or because baseball is his true "love", or because he needed the money(for family reasons), or because he just got greedy, OR maybe deep down inside HE knows HE doesn't have what it takes to be an NFL QB.

Now, don't get me wrong here. I would be thrilled if little drew becomes the next franchise QB for the Dallas Cowboys. I hope he doesn't fall flat on his face. But comparing his situation to Mr Staubach's is just...wrong. IMO.

The "I-Find-That-A-Little-Hard-To-Believe" meter just got pegged on OVERLOAD.

Do you really think I would advocate cutting a Hall of Fame quarterback?

I honestly did not think anyone would not "get" this thread.

Sad, isn't it?

And it seems to be getting worse lately.

I wish message boards were around back in the 1970s.

The Morton-Staubach wars would have been quite a spectacle.

Fan 1: IF ANY OF YOU THINK ROGER IS MEREDITH OR EVEN LEBARON, YOU HAVE ANOTHER THING COMING!

Fan 2: STAUBACH HAS PEDIGREE!

:D

I am pretty sure, there would have plenty of people posting then, that Roger is bum and would never amount to anything by many fans. But I am sure, no one would claim to that now though, even if they are posting today though :D

I wonder if there was a Clint Longley faction.

I was thinking the same thing.
:laugh2:

The Hogeboom-White debates would have been huge.

And can you imagine if message boards would have been around when Landry was fired and Jimmy was brought on.

That would have been amazing.

Clint didn't have "pedigree", but he did have "moxie".

like i said...

you are comparing apples . . . . to unripened oranges.

Actually, based on his play, I think Staubach would have qualified as an unripened orange back then.

Staubach was playing in a semi pro navy league while serving. He also took his yearly leave and spent it at Training Camp all 4 years. Not to mention he was a 3 YEAR starter for Navy, who back then played all the big boys. Henson spent 3 years TOTALLY away from the game and only started 8 games. BIG DIFFERENCE.

So that further supports that Dallas should have cut Staubach. After all, his preparation for the NFL was a lot better than Henson's, and Staubach still sucked his first two years.

What were the Cowboys thinking?

Yes, but he was picked green and allowed to ripen.

Henson is the green orange that has has fallen off the tree and now needs to be squashed because it will never ripen. I think.

right there is the huge difference -- intangibles. the ability to elevate your team and teammates. only a very few have "it"...

as for the point on being patient with henson, i'll buy that. after all, he is the only game in town, so to speak; who else is there?

While you may be right on the intangibles (Staubach definitely proved he had them eventually) being a huge difference between the two, I don't know if many would have thought Staubach showed any his first two seasons.

We don't have enough proof about Henson to know if he will develop into that kind of leader or anything close to it..

And you might be right, I won't dismiss that. But you could just as easily be wrong.

A lot of people could have held the same opinion about Staubach based on his early year, but like you said, he was allowed to ripen.

I wasn't proposing to squash the orange. But many want to.

Same thing they are doing with Henson. Taking into account his absents from the game and allowing him some time. I agreed about the comparison as far as Henson and Roger being away from the game and then returning and your right Roger 1st couple of years was not a thing of beauty but of course the rest of his career was and we can only hope that Henson career at least comes close to that. Before I get jumped I'm not saying Henson will or won't only that he is being given the opportunity and what he ends up doing with this opportunity is all on him.

The nuances of the original post obviously escaped you.

Wow, I can not believe how many poster's head this thread flew right over.

Great post gimmesix.

Patience really is a virtue and a lesson that many individuals on this particular board could learn well.
