Yesterday at the Ranch was much more tense than normal, and it started (of course) with the TO interview. It was his first meeting with the media since he said after the game that he thought the ball didn't come his way often enough.
After calling out ESPN on at least three occasions, claiming that he was being "villified" just a week after being praised for his hustle game in Green Bay, saying that "you guys" (in the media) are making stuff up about him, and on several occasions challenging us to "assess the tape" to determine how much value to place on the 18 passes thrown his way, TO ended the interview after 8 minutes; usually he'll go longer than that (he did return to his locker later and talked in a more casual setting to some newspaper reporters).
Soon after the TO interview eneded, we were gathered around Tony Romo's locker awaiting his arrival, and we turned when one newspaper reporter shouted at another. Later, after the locker room cleared out, another two members of the media got into a heated argument. It just added to the overall, heated atmosphere at the Ranch.
Of the many things that set football apart from the other major sports, one major difference is the role the media can play. First off, there are 6 days between games, during which time there is nothing to do but talk about what happened as a result of the last game. Additionally, football is now the most popular sport in the country, so there is more scrutiny and attention on the stories surrounding it. So we get weeks like this one, where the Cowboys lose a game, TO says something after the game that he probably shouldn't have (to the surprise of no one), and away we go. Sunday can't get here fast enough, unless it comes with a loss to the Bengals ... then we'll really have something to talk about.
But at the end of the day, did anyone expect the Cowboys to go 16-0? Most predictions I've seen had them from 11-5 to 13-3; if that's the case, what's the big deal about Sunday's loss? It just puts them on pace for the 12-4 record a lot of us expect them to have.
