What a ring for Romo would mean

Eli Manning has won 2 Super Bowls, and he's still mocked all the time.

Yes because his career has massive ups and downs last year he was at 69.4 QB rating with 18 TD and 27 ints. Normally you do not see elite QB fluctuate like that from very good to lousy. On the other hand as bad as the saints have been this year Drew Brees himself has a 99.2 QB rating with 32 TD and 14 ints still elite type numbers

I think there is an argument that Romo could make the HoF will a couple of deep playoff runs that don't result in Superbowl victory.

I think it's virtually impossible for Romo to make the HoF will only a single playoff victory to his credit.

I've been a member of a Giants message board for 7 years. I used to live in New York state. Let me tell you: Eli Manning has won two Super Bowls, is a two-time Super Bowl MVP, and he's still mocked and criticized all the time, even by many Giants fans.

People are really overestimating what winning a Super Bowl does for a player's reputation.

I think you are underestimating Romo's reputation. Manning has legitimately had multiple stinker games and gets the heat, but at the end of the day, he does not carry the label as a choker. Winning those championship gives him that collateral.

Nice thread, Troy was that guy for me. I started watching Dallas seriously in '77 but I was only seven years old, so didn't get to really appreciate Roger's game. I loved White but Troy set the standard for me.

I agree but it becomes hard at least in my view to call him elite. To me elite is not a season or 2 it is the ability to produce at a high level every year.

My buddy (a Colts fan) and I had an interesting chat last night about his love for Peyton Manning. He was talking about how even though he will always love the Colts and is a big Luck fan, nothing will ever compare to the Manning years because they were his formative years as a fan. Luck may win ten Super Bowls, but he will never be Peyton. Peyton took over when my buddy was in 4th grade, and quite literally saved football in Indianapolis. He put the Colts on the map and made them relevant here.

My dad often says similar things about Roger Staubach. He was in his teens during the 70s glory years, and always raves about ol Roger the Dodger. He still roots hard for the Cowboys and watches them most weeks, but it's just not the same as when Staubach was out there.

This got me to thinking; who is my Manning, my Staubach? Without a doubt, it's Tony Romo.

I'm 26, and my first vivid memory of the NFL was Super Bowl XXX when I was seven years old. Little did I know it would go downhill from there. Sure, there were a lot of other great moments, like Emmitt breaking Payton's record, but for most of my formative years, being a Cowboys fan was a futile enterprise. We weren't even relevant.

Enter Tony Romo. My username (romothesavior) is a bit hyperbolic, but the dude made the Cowboys relevant for the first time in my adult life. I'll always remember his first game, the bobbled snap in Seattle, the beautiful 13-3 season, all the heroic comebacks and frustrating losses. Sure, 8-8 has sucked the past three years. But it beats being a kid and avid fan, and looking forward to 5-11s and Quincy Carter and Troy Hambrick.

Just like my buddy with Manning and my dad with Staubach, I am invested in Romo like no other player. And like my buddy and my dad, I'll keep rooting for my team long after he's gone. Much to the annoyance of my significant other, the Cowboys hold a special place in my heart that little else can match. But when I'm 50 and yelling at the TV for some other gunslinger to win us ring number 10, it'll be with just a shade less passion than I possess now. I had never contemplated that until my conversation last night, and it's made me appreciate his career and this season even more.

Yes it's just a game, and yes I'm just a fan watching grown men play it. But I want Romo to win one so damn bad. Not only so I can rub it in all the naysayers faces, but because he deserves one. The dude should go down as a first ballot Hall of Famer, one of the all-time greats to wear the Star or strap on a helmet. But it won't happen without a ring. He will never earn widespread respect without one. So ******, lets get a ring!
I feel bad for you. I've witnessed greatness twice during my life. We'll see if it's a third time.

For me no Cowboy QB beats Roger Staubach , We were never out of a game with him in charge. As for Romo I think a SB win would get him into the HOF. You put that with his stats and they would add up. If he could actually beat GB and Seattle on the road to get there that would go a long way in ending the choker label.

No doubt special man and you could never count us out when Roger was on the field. He is a big reason we were called America's team, Navy officer and the all American, clean cut guy

I am sure there are plenty of people who will say 2 SB rings is a sure bet to make the HOF. But Eli Manning is NOT a HOFer in my opinion. He needs 2 more seasons at a high level with his team making the playoffs. He was NOT the reason his teams made the Super Bowl or won the Super Bowl. Without those 4 DL controlling the game....Eli does not come close to making or winning a Super Bowl. I am not trying to take anything from him...he won them and has a ring. But in this day and age where stats are inflated because of rules changes....the competition for him to get in will be Ben Rothlesberger...and Ben gets the nod over Eli in my opinion.

I think Romo would need one...and a couple of more elite seasons to get in. He has had to carry a MUCH bigger load than Eli. Heck for many years...this team would not have even sniffed 8-8 without Romo.

If Drew Brees finishes his career with 3 or 4 seasons like the one he is having this year...and with his team being sub .500...he is not getting in.

Brady and Manning are locks

Aaron Rodgers needs 4 more seasons at a high level...with his team being in the hunt.

But it will be interesting. Remember...the HOF cannot take them all....so they will be compared to the QBs of their era...and there are a LOT of them that are putting up big numbers. So for me...the eye test will go a long ways.

It would Mean everything like others have said. He will go down as one the great cowboys either way but a ring would solidify him as a super bowl winning hall of famer.

OP, we're the same age and I mostly agree with you. I have vague memories of the early 90s years and the first whole game I remember watching was the 95 Super Bowl.

My truly formative years when the game of football started to 'click' for me were the three 5-11 Campo years. I think due to this, I understand how meaningful it is for us to have someone like Romo.

However, also due to 'forming' during those years, I think it will allow me to appreciate our future quarterbacks as well. I'll miss Romo. I'll remember how great he was and what he did for us. He'll probably always be 'my' quarterback, but I won't constantly compare future QBs to him.

I was molded into a Cowboys fan in such a way that I know to appreciate what you've got while you have it, and not live in the past.

The Romo name is so tarnished that not even a ring would get him in the HOF. Hes going to need two and to repeat this season three more times.

I really think I might want him to get a ring more than he wants one lol. He is easily my favorite player in the NFL right now.
