What a ring for Romo would mean

Here's some perspective for you.

Roger Staubach, Captain Comeback, had 15 fourth quarter comebacks and 23 game-winning drives.

Tony Romo, the 'Choker', has 23 fourth quarter comebacks and 27 game-winning drives.

And the difference is what Roger did in big games. When Romo finally starts winning in the playoffs he will get his props. That's just the way it is. Hopefully he'll do it this year. He's already made strides this December.

Roger Staubach is my QB...some of the most iconic games in NFL history were with him at the helm. Big time, big game QB...I am so glad I got to witness his greatness.

There are several videos out on the Cowboys. The one which perhaps is the best "history book" is 10 greatest games. This offers a sampling of the Cowboys during each era. it includes the First SB win, the Hail Mary game, The second SB win - all Staubach - The great comeback with Danny White against the falcons - then the NFCC and SB from 92, 93, and 95.

If this is the part of the team history you do not know, players you've never seen, then this is a must.

But to the question of the OP, I think even though I saw them all play, the Triplets are my favorite - and Michael Irvin is the most favored of all.

1st ballot HOF with a ring. Not even considered without it.

So say the Cowboys go to the Super Bowl this year and lose to the Pats 38-35. Romo had lead a long drive to take the lead 35-31 late in the fourth quarter. The defense then allows the Pats to drive 90 yards for the game winning TD in under two minutes.

If the defense makes the stop Romo is in the HoF?

If the defense chokes it away Romo is not in the HoF?

No offense but I find the 'he needs a ring" argument ridiculous.

Team game.

Team game but if you follow the narrative on Romo or any other QB...it isn't applicable. Not fair but the way it is and always will be.

A ring would make HOF talk legitimate but I don't think that alone will get him in. I think he will also need several more years of deep playoff success, maybe even at least one other NFC Championship appearance. You can't just have one ring without any other playoff success. They ring will be thought of as a fluke by enough voters to keep him out. If this team is ever good enough to get a ring, it should be good enough for 2-3 other years of playoff appearances and wins.

Not necessarily true. See Brees and Aaron Rodgers. Both will be in the Hall and both had one good postseason to speak of...the rest of their story are stats. Romo has stats too and with a ring those stats become even greater.

Great thread. Roger Staubach was definately all of those things for me when I was a teenager. I started watching when Morton was the starter and Staubach was just coming into the league.
I was fortunate enough to see the rich history of the Cowboys as it was being made. Dallas has been blessed with great QB's in their past and present but also blessed with a great over all talent level that has to be one of the best in the NFL. When you think back at all the great players some of us older Cowboy fans have been able to watch every Sunday, I wouldn't trade it for another teams history!
I believe we may be entering another nice run with some more great ones! Lets hope so! :) It looks to me like the Jason Garrett influence has atleast slowed the impulsive ways of Jerry Jones and is developing a strategy for a more sustainable longterm type of success. We will probably never see the type of dominance we have in the past but longevity would be welcome in todays NFL!
Good post romosavior!

Simple answer: everything.

Agreed. What better story is there in the NFL than Romo getting a ring? A small college guy who is undrafted catches on to the ***-end of the roster of a storied franchise, languishes while other QBs with more cred but less talent blow their shots ahead of him, hangs on long enough to get his shot, leads his understaffed and mismanaged team with great play but gets a sticky label of "can't win the big one", and ends up winning the big one on the biggest stage for the biggest team in the biggest sport to prove the naysayers wrong and reach his professional pinnacle?

Tell me a better rags to riches pull yourself up by your bootstrap little fish in a big pond coming of age story in the NFL...

This is true. I suppose that there is a generation now that only knows Romo. Too bad, because they missed some greats in Staubach and Aikman and a pretty good one in Danny White.

Having seen them all, Romo would need a ring to elevate him onto the Cowboys' Rushmore though. No question about it.

I also have a great fondness of Dandy Don. He was one funny guy and a damn good QB, too.

I think Don Meredith was pretty good as well. I would include him in the Cowboy's QB Rushmore over Danny.

As for Romo, with a ring he is easily a Hof'er. Without a ring, I doubt he gets enough attention from voters.

Ive watched Staubach, White, Aikman, and Romo, in my opinion Aikman was the best of the bunch, very accurate passer and a great playoff and SB record. Aikman could've had alot better stats but that wasnt the focus of his offense during his era.

Neither Staubach or Aikman can make Crayton catch a wide open pass that could have gone 80 yards, fixed Terry Glenn's injury, or made Crayton not stop on his route.

Neither Staubach or Aikman could have survived the utter destruction that the Vikings put on our OL.

Romo has played fine in the playoffs. It's the team that let him down. Whether it was an incompetent loud mouth WR who couldn't catch a pass on the big stage, or an OL that aged 15 years overnight, Romo was the least of our problems.

It's just not fair, is it? Romo getting screwed like that, but that's football. You sound as if it was all conspiratorial against Romo... but these things happen and the truly great ones overcome these things. Romo just hasn't done that in a playoff setting, to date. But I believe his day is coming.

I've been a member of a Giants message board for 7 years. I used to live in New York state. Let me tell you: Eli Manning has won two Super Bowls, is a two-time Super Bowl MVP, and he's still mocked and criticized all the time, even by many Giants fans.

People are really overestimating what winning a Super Bowl does for a player's reputation.
Plunkett isn't in the HOF either, and Eli is no more accomplished.

It would mean he finally played on a team good enough to win a SB, a team that he didn't have to carry single-handedly. That's all it would mean. He wasn't able to carry poor Cowboys teams on his back; that's no knock on his career. Very few players at any position can carry a crappy team.

I don't think Romo ever reaches the HOF...very unlikely. He has played in a generation with Manning, Brady, Rodgers, Rothlesberger, etc. that is likely to place him in the tier with Brees, and he's not going to the HOF either.

It would mean even more for him than for me, which is a heck of a lot....:)
