What could the Cowboys learn from the Philly team building model

Trenches first. Be active in FA. Address your problem areas, i.e. Philly drafted DT in back to back drafts, also drafted CBs in 1st n 2nd rd this past draft...fix your problem areas!

QB first. This cannot be disputed in the SB era.

The order of importance in team building is:
QB
LT (or RT if left handed QB)
DE

The true MVP of the SB today was actually two groups of men- the egirls DL and egirls OL. THEY won the game. That’s the most dominant trench team I’ve seen since the 90s Cowboys.
I totally agree but I believe the co-mvp would have to be Roseman.

Who picked the players and manipulated the resources to get them.

Howie built this team the right way he is a capable talented general manager who wants to win Super bowls

When you resurrect the career o Becton and have drafted rookie players that pick six Patrick mahomes in the Super bowl you have done your homework.

Granted getting someone like Barkley is really a no brainer but we are too cheap to do something like that.

I think we could learn a lot about team building problem is our owners priorities are different than the eagles owner.

Jeffrey Lurie wants to win Super bowls and makes it a priority he hires a general manager and makes assembling the team to win Super bowls his job.

Our owner makes making money the priority and he is the general manager and assembles teams with making money being the first priority.
The NFL is way too competitive to just hope you're going to luck into a Super bowl without going all in

The only way is to copy the Eagles. They are winners right now we are not. Just look who their DEF Co-ordinator is, one of the best if not the best in the game. They have built a multiple attacking DEF something we don't seem interested in doing. Their O-Line is dominant, their drafting has been superb.

Their way works, ours does not.

One thing Jerry has said in the past 30 years that is concerning is: If we get #8 (he also said Romo and Dak) into the tournament we have a chance.

That’s concerning when the game plan is hope your QB will outplay the other team. In the regular season that can happen where your QB can go off and have the game of his life, but usually in the playoffs the better teams win barring injury.

Our “GMs” base a lot of roster building on hope. Hope that some players will step up and fill voids. Hope doesn’t win in the playoffs. That’s why we’ve had some great regular seasons but poor playoffs.

The Chiefs injuries at WR and offensive line was their undoing tonight. What frustrates me is our “GMs” started the season with massive holes in the roster and hoped things would go better. And we’ve been doing that since ‘98. What baffles me to no end is Jerry witnessed a team being built through the trenches(91-96) and stubbornly ignores that philosophy. Weird.

What they could learn: hire a real GM and maybe have a shot at winning a SB and staying relevant for years.

Right! That goes to my point. We didn’t/don’t need another Schoonmaker and we don’t need another WR. We need dominant offensive and defensive lines. Dak’s best chance of success is not through a TE, WR or even a RB. Dominant trenches would take so much pressure off Dak and then he can play loose like Hurts played tonight.
This is the key to getting the most out of Dak. His best games are when he has time to sit back and not have to rush his throws and/ or descions.

Kellen Moore benefitted by being the offensive coordinator of an Eagles offense who has the best offensive line, best running back and best receiving corp in the league. There are 20 other offensive coordinators who would have looked just as good with all of those talented offensive pieces.

If Moore was truly that good, he would have done the same thing with the Chargers. Moore is a serviceable coordinator but pump your brakes on thinking he's one of the top coordinators in the game.

The blame KM got on his way out of Dallas was obviously misplaced. The Chargers had buckets of issues on the offensive line (injuries and poor play), and used the fifth overall pick on their star rookie OT Joe Alt. The offense was more balanced this season, but the difference in the defense was the biggest reason for change in success.

Philly had to replace both coordinators this past offseason because the offense cratered with largely the same players as this season, save for Barkley. KC felt like all of Philly’s offense flowed through Barkley, and dedicated lots of resources to stop the run game which it did. They could not stop the passing game, and it proved to be their undoing. That game was as much about the Philly offense still moving the ball as it was the Philly defense stopping Mahomes and KC.

That game just proved KM was never the issue here. Blame Jerry if you must for the players not performing like Philly’s just did. We know blaming the players is not something lots of fans can do.

I agree but that’s not the point of the thread. Eagles dominated the trenches today and that’s why they won. They’ve won 2 Super Bowls in the last decade and both Super Bowls were won by defense. They beat Mahomes in his prime and Brady in his prime. Defense wins championships.

Our “model” is to get a great offense to set up our defense. We need to reverse that. We need a defense that will take pressure off the offense.

We’re building our team backwards. Tonight’s game was a great example of winning in the trenches. Everyone expected, especially me, that the Chiefs would come out and open it up and get a lead and the Eagles would be playing catch up. The exact opposite happened. The Eagles frustrated Mahomes by dominating the trenches and the Chiefs couldn’t get going.

Our team building philosophy is fundamentally flawed. We need to beef up the trenches, especially on defense.

SB 52 was much more about outscoring New England who ended up scoring 33. The last of the game with the strip sack sealed the win, but when your opponent scores 33 without garbage points-it’s more about the offense if you win. Some games the offense just has to out boat race the opponent’s offense. Postseason winning is about adapting to what the game demands-sometimes it’s more about the offense.

Good points. I agree. I especially agree about adapting in the playoffs. Chiefs really focused on Barkley and the rest of the offense adapted. In this tonight’s game the Chiefs couldn’t adapt to Sweat and the Eagles’ d line wrecking havoc.

Moving forward I would like to see the Cowboys build the trenches, especially D line because in playoffs I’d feel more comfortable going in with a strong defense.

Plenty of teams do that, but the team still sucks. You have to have the right people and the right team philosophy too.
Yeah but the own has to get out of the way first because you can hire the right people but if they are not allowed to do their job it won't matter.
