What could the Cowboys learn from the Philly team building model

I don't remember the team, but somebody picked off 1 of Howard Roseman's top deputies that worked on salaries with him. Nowadays that might be smarter than poaching from the coaching staff. That's what we should have been doing because obviously whoever is working on contracts doesn't know what he's doing, or does he? Maybe our front office is all about profits for themselves, not winning Super Bowl's for the team and fans.
I think you’re talking about the Jets with Joe Douglas. Joe Douglas was just fired.

We don’t know the extent Jerry or his son have done anything?

They literally brag about their authority. No owner in the NFL other than the Bengals owner has exerted the amount of influence in the day to day operations of the football team than our two boobs.

Every owner overrules their football people from time to time. Lurie absolutely has injected himself into certain situations but Roseman runs that show more than Lurie. That’s not the case here. The two Jones fill the role of Roseman.
Yeah, you'd have to really ignore a ton of evidence to say we don't know how much control Jerry exerts.

Really how is that? Because you have created a category of GM and shoehorned what they actually do in it.

Every owner influences their team's decisions. That does not lead to Jerry being at one extreme.

I can get behind the idea that Jerry is not any good at it. The proof is in the pudding but we do not know enough about how the Cowboys much less the rest of the league operate executively to make claims about the ranking of individuals.
So you are proclaiming that Jerry just lies about how much he has to do w/ it?

Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis might be the best DT combo in the NFL, top 5 for sure. Soooooooooooooo, how did Philly acquire them? By losing and by trading away Carson Wentz. Philly does not win the super bowl w/o that DLine. Consistently finishing w/ 8-10 wins is the way to NOT get into super bowl contention.

Think about it, the last time we were winning super bowls it was directly tied to the HWalker trade. That bevy of extra picks is what propelled us into the super bowls.

If only Stephen cared enough to study how Philly builds and rebuilds.
Stephen needs to study how to get a great GM in here and then move out of the way, which isn't happening. Jerry just handed the controller over to Stephen and we get to see him try to run his real life madden season year after year.

The main issue with this team is that the ceiling is constant mediocrity and we'll be constantly there. Philly is going to have a superteam for a couple of years, win a superbowl or two, and then they might go through cap madness and lose for a couple of years but in the meanwhile while they are losing, they are amassing high picks to rebuild their team, and once their high level picks develop, they should be out of cap madness and then they load up again and go on another superbowl run.

Meanwhile, we are always assembling some budget team that is built for regular season success and in years that we should be tanking to get high level picks, we are winning pointless games and are for forced to pick lower. When we DO have a great team, the FO goes cheap and refuses to go all in because they want to run the team like an accounting firm. We simply do not have the FO strategy to win superbowls. Trying to build ONLY through the draft and only using FA for bargain free agents is a losing formula. When we should be tanking, we are trying to show out and win pointless games so our draft capital is less.

In this league, you HAVE to go all in, and then go bad for a few years, then go all in again.

Both the Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter picks required trades and a lot of GM creativity. They gave up 3 picks to move up two spots from 15 to 13 to get Davis. They also traded up to land Carter, and had to do a lot of scouting and take a calculated risk on him (as evidenced by how many teams passed on him before the Eagles). Hindsight is easy but at the time lots of people worried about the pick. It's also possible that if he landed in a different environment, without people like Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham to mentor him, maybe things are different now.

Yup. Extra picks from trading away assets is how they've gotten to and won super bowls. Smart GM.

Carter wouldn't be as good here w/o Davis beside him and w/o multiple talented players around him to help w/ the double teams.

It was Lurie that pushed to draft Hurts. He said he didn’t want to miss out on the next Russel Wilson.

I've tried!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Been screaming for DTs for years. Decades. Been pointing out that super bowl winners always have good DLines. Especially good DTs. Absolutely need that interior disruptor to beat the Mahomes's of the NFL. In all likelihood, you won't get one w/o picking high in the draft. Which means losing. Which Jerry doesn't comprehend. He'd rather be 8-9 than 2-15, even if it means someone else gets Jalen Carter/Aaron Donald/Jeffrey Simmons. Jerry doesn't understand the DT position, but insists on being the one picking them. Just insane.

I was so angry when Fletcher Cox was ours for the taking and instead we took Mo Claiborne
