What could the Cowboys learn from the Philly team building model

One things for certain is the fans have to stop blaming “ coaching”. Kellen Moore is a SB winning OC and the fans hated the guy here. The cowboys players just simply choke. Another thing that’s clear is the Eagles GM is the best in the league. He is very good at not only drafting but he is GREAT at structuring contracts.
But Kellen Moore was terrible here in the playoffs. Just because he went to win a SB with a much better franchise doesn't mean we should have kept him around. Good for him to win a ring but he became stale here and it went well beyond the players not performing.

His warts came to fruition in the Rams divisional round playoff game. It took a Rams offensive meltdown at the end to save him.

The true MVP of the SB today was actually two groups of men- the egirls DL and egirls OL. THEY won the game. That’s the most dominant trench team I’ve seen since the 90s Cowboys.
I made the same observation, Bob, in that the Eagles' OL and DL was reminiscent of the Cowboys. The triplets often get much of the credit for those SB victories, but every part of their success was because they won the battle in the trenches on both sides. Last night, we witnessed how a great QB like Mahomes can be made to look average when his OL is consistently getting beat by the other team's DL.

Morris Claiborne 2012 draft. Which explains why. The Cowboys used to make lots of headlines to start the free agency period. They just sucked at it worse than they miss in the draft.
The last first day free agent they signed was Brandon Carr in 2012 also, in a normal cycle a GM last about 5 or 6 years so don't get to have PTSD from a free agent signing or draft move that occurred 13 years ago. The Joneses have been there too long.

No argument from me. This thread was never about what they will learn (which would be a very short thread).

All the money JJ has and can’t hire the best to mange the cap. Yes you have to eventually be in cap hell at some point. You have stars that need to be paid. You have to stagger them out and use the signing bonuses to get that guaranteed money paid off. Restructure and keep money free to bring in FA talent. Have studs on the LOS of both sides. SJ can’t do it. He is cheap. Good players don’t come cheap. We have a good scouting team and drafting.

Lines of scrimmage are the foundation to winning the game. QB’s have some importance, but like all other players-they are commodities. Once the commodity looks like it’s fading-see ya later (and who cares if the team implodes).

Build a strong running game with a great offensive line, but target high end receiving weapons and pay high draft pick if you can secure a young one.

Continue adding high draft capital to the defensive front. If the draft falls a certain way, take a high end secondary player with the premium picks. Focus on cerebral players that can adjust to different offenses-especially in the secondary.

The game today did not go like most of the Philly games this year-they adjusted and took advantage of one on one matchups. No running game? No problem. Jalen also used his legs several times to good effect.
build inside out...but we won't because they don't sell as many jerseys.

evaluate talent, which we can't because we reach for guys like Mazi smith and Guyton in first round with zero impact.

manage contracts, which we won't, because we like to be one of the lowest spending teams in the league over all.

focus on championships, which we won't because we need people coming through the building, watching the players and landing our helicopter on the field to get clicks in the media.

The trenches cover the warts elsewhere. That’s football 101. Jerry likes flash over substance and I don’t see that changing.

Sign players like the Eagles have and cut players like the Cowboys have...................

Not with the consistency and to the extent Jerry has.
That is quite the assertion. I showed him Lurie insisting on and nixing deals by unilateral fiat.

When it comes down to it, we really do not know what extent Jerry has done anything. We have been privy to no executive meetings or their contents.

Management is certainly a problem but this is just scapegoating looking for causation.

You don't need a great quarterback. You need a great defense...How many years I've been saying this now????

The main lesson we can learn is to hire a great GM and MOVE OUT OF THE WAY

The Eagles had 2 first round picks, one of which yielded Jalen Carter after they lost the superbowl a few years back. Howie is ACTIVE in BOTH the draft and free agency. We're not competing with that.

broken record but the difference between the Cowboys and winning franchises (chiefs, eagles) is that their front office doesn't give QBs a "lifetime" starting gig. I'm dead serious when I say Nick Files would still be starting for us if he did what he did as a Cowboy instead of an Eagle. Probably Wentz too just based on that 2017 "almost MVP" season. At some point, competent GMS know it's time to move on from players. The chiefs had their version of Dak in Alex Smith and still traded up in the first round to draft his replacement despite having a great season the year prior

We will never win as long as our front office keeps holding on to mediocre players and coaches hoping that "next year we'll get em"

True but then, what's the point of paying average QBs top dollar? Why not just draft a QB every 4 years un the 4th round and build a juggernaut roster? The problem is some want to have it both ways, say QBs are just a cig and then turn around and say the cig needs to be paid top dollar

Stop the run… run the ball. Have a qb that can manage the game.

Daks best years where when we had a solid run game… and we ignored the rb position the past couple of years.

I mean, it's been 30 yrs. Do you really believe Jerry/Stephen care about learning anything from another team at this point? Actually, the point is that they already know everything and don't have a need to learn from anyone. That's the problem.

Nothing. They no it all 30 years of success shows the Cowboy way is the best way.

And the biggie: Trade away assets while they are still worth something. Philly is not in this super bowl w/o the Wentz trade.
