What Did We Learn About the Eagles?

I noticed they don’t have narcissistic senile snake oil salesmen masquerading as a general manager and a quarterback who craps the bed
I noticed that too.

When they won the SB and presented the trophy....I saw a guy in a suit holding the Lombardi and I was like "who's that guy? Oh...it's the owner"

Their owner wanted less camera time after winning a SuperBowl, then our narrsasistic senile snake oil salesman wants after a pre-season game win.

Pathetic

100%. That game was won by D, plain and simple. O was good too, don't get me wrong, but the D held KC to 0 points in the first half.
Held them to 0 mid way through the 3rd.

They essentially held them to 0 until the game was won, and they started focusing on milking the clock and celebrating on the sidelines.

I have no doubt they coulda shut them out completely and knocked Mahomes out of the game if they wanted to....but I think they just started feeling like they were beating up a 90 year old woman and just started taking it easy on them out of pity

Not out of pity, that's simply winning football. Get a good lead toward the end of the 3rd, then keep everything in front of you.

I read an interesting funny stat from this years superbowl.

Patrick Mahomes threw for more yardage and TD's than any other QB AFTER the opposing head coach got his Gatorade shower from his players.

I had to look. Coach got hit at 2:52 and the Chiefs just scored with the score 40-14.

So the stat was wrong in that Mahomes only threw one touchdown after the "bath".

Not even sure a stat is kept for after a gatorade bath LOL

They will be extinct in 2029, but they have something we haven't won in about 30 years

I have no doubt the Eagles owner and Howie Roseman told the coach to ease up out of respect for Andy Reid...since he's the Eagles most winningest coach in history and still thought of very highly there.

No way. They were playing prevent D. Why? Because playing in your face D no matter what is a better road to a comeback than playing prevent clock eating D. They backed off so the clock would run, plain and simple.

Not only that Reid would be horrified at the thought of the other team backing off to respect him. That is actually disrespectful in itself. And not done.

They have the toughest dudes there too. Nolan Smith, their pass rusher , played with a torn tricep and just had surgery recently. Brandon Graham came back from a torn tricep and played after injuring it midway through the season. They play for more than the pay day.

More importantly, what did we learn about ourselves and about what it takes to win in the NFC and Super Bowl.

The Eagles won the Super Bowl against a very good Chiefs defense that was able to shut down Saquan Barkley (25 carries for 57 yards and no TDs, and they only attempted 22 passes, 7 of those were to the RB, so only 15 passes directed towards the TEs or WRs. When is the last time a team won the SB with so little passing?
It didn't matter than they were getting nothing out of the run game; they leaned on their defense and still ran the ball more times than they passed it.

All those seemingly meaningless handoffs to Barkley made the Chiefs focus on the run game, and that gave Hurts 1) good protection and 2) good receivers running open all over the field.

What did the Eagles learn as their season rolled along? You tell me. Here are their passing attempts across 16 games.

I'm not including game 17 because they played their 3rd string QB in a meaningless game with backups and let him throw the ball 41 times....haha.
It's obvious they were not thrilled with their 2-2 record after 4 games when they averaged passing the ball 33 times per game.
In the next 12 games, they averaged 22.6 passes per game, and in games 14 and 15, they saw that they were heading in the wrong direction again.

Playoffs?
Round 1 - 21 passes
Round 2 - 20 passes
NFC title - 28 passes
Super Bowl - 22 passes, 7 to RB -------this is much more reminiscent of the 90's Cowboys and how little Aikman was required to pass per game than today's pass happy NFL.

I was also a little shocked by the note shared on their OL. I knew they were the best, but the biggest ever? Averaging 6'6" and 338 lbs? Yeah, that helps.
Meanwhile, despite McCarthy's verbal desire to run more, we have had an offense under McCarthy that has been pass happy.

Dak's career
Garrett 1- 16 games, 28.69 attempts per game as a rookie
Garrett 2- 16 games, 30.63 attempts per game
Garrett 3- 16 games, 32.88 attempts per game
Garrett 4- 16 games, 37.25 attempts per game.....more and more passing during Zeke's prime
McCarthy 5- 5 games, 44.4 attempts per game prior to injury
McCarthy 6- 16 games, 37.31 attempts per game
McCarthy 7- 12 games, 32.83 attempts per game
McCarthy 8- 17 games, 34.71 attempts per game
McCarthy 9- 8 games, 35.75 attempts per game prior to injury

5 trips to the playoffs in 9 years
year 1 - 1 game, 38 pass attempts
year 2 - 2 games, 65 pass attempts
year 3 - 1 game, 43 pass attempts
year 4 - 2 games, 70 pass attempts
year 5 - 1 game, 60 pass attempts

7 games, 91.8 passer rating, 14 TDs, 7 INTs.....2-5 record, but 39.4 passing attempts per game

First, we all know Dak Prescott was not drafted in the 4th round due to his elite passing skills; he worked hard and improved his processing, passing, accuracy, etc, and he IS an above average QB in the NFL, but not a guy who should be throwing the ball at the exorbitant rates he has had every season since his rookie year.

Second, we all know that this is not the recipe for winning tough football games in the playoffs no matter who your QB is. No, we don't have the Eagles OL, nor their RB, but they handed Barkley the ball 25 times for only 57 yards and no scores because 1) they did not want their QB passing the ball 30+ times; and 2) they wanted KC in there preparing for the run every down in order to get their guys open in the secondary.

Whether you think our QB is above average or below average or you're a true homer who wants to believe he's elite, you have to admit that we've done him no favors over his 9 seasons asking him to throw the ball so many times per game, especially in so many seasons when we have had only 1 significant receiver.

Maybe Schottenhiemer won't be the guy who gets us over the hump, but if he can get us focused on being a tougher team, a team that can run the ball and play defense up the middle, it will be a step in the right direction.....because these stats over the past 9 seasons (and probably throughout Romo's career if someone wants to look into it) are not the recipe for success with any team, any QB, any defense.
That their GM is not an idiot.

That their Owner was smart enough to hire a GM.

What we learned about the Eagles is they are a hundred times better than the Cowboys................ LOL!
And vastly better than the chiefs. Which was a staggering gut punch, and reality as the game went on. We have a ton of work to do to even have a conversation about competing with them. Daks comments were ridiculous. We aren't close. The caveat is, if we handle free agency and the draft very aggressively, we can be right there in short order. It can be done if a team has the gumption.

Zero chance this happened.

They had a lot of backups in and they were playing soft in coverage.

Not w/o dumping some salary cap into a void year and finding two top 5 DTs.

They were, until they traded him for a 1st and then built up the best DLine in football.

The biggest difference between them and us is philosophy. You think Jerry moves up for Carter? No way.
And who thought Philly would trade Wentz or who would trade for him?

Philly did move on.

If Jerry wanted to sign Dak, his timing was all wrong. Now that they have Dak, do you think they would ever consider trading him? (I believe Dak has a no trade clause as well, but I could be wrong).

Jerry runs the most successful team in sports and he's a billionaire, but other than the fact that he can remain the most successful team in the world vs what Dak actually can produce for the team, do you think Jerry really cares what Dak does as long as he the the most valuable NFL team in the world?

This isn't a Dak thread, it's a thread on what the ownership and general management would do with the players they have signed. It just so happed that #4 for the cowboys is costing them a lot of money, no different than Wentz did for the Eagles.

what did we learn...hmmm, so what did we learn?

we learned their GM is much better. we learned they can put a winning team together around an slightly above average QB. we learned that they built inside out. we learned they can manage the cap better. we learned they find ways to improve. we learned they are focused on winning. we learned cowboys don't care to be a winning team. we learned that cowboys are going to be stuck in this rot for another 10, 20 years. who knows maybe longer. we learned they are a better team than us (that hurts to say).

What got me, was reading that only four players remained from the 2018 Super Bowl roster.
Yes, but that's 8 years.

The days of football players staying with the same team their entire career is long gone with todays money, contracts and salary caps IMO.

Zach Martin will be inducted into the hall of fame some day. Her played in 7 playoff games winning only 2 playoff games in his 10 years as a cowboy, the only team he has ever known.

Would you rather get into the hall of fame or win a super bowl?
